Surname or Lastname
English (of Norman origin)
English (of Norman origin) : habitational name from Sai in Orne or Say in Indre, perhaps so called from a Gaulish personal name Saius + the Latin locative suffix -acum.English : metonymic occupational name for a maker or seller of say, a kind of finely textured cloth, Middle English say (from Old French saie, Latin saga, plural of sagum ‘military cloak’). In some instances the surname may have arisen from a nickname for an habitual wearer of clothes made of this material.Southern French : topographic name from saix ‘rock’ (Latin saxum), or a habitational name from a place named with this word, for example, Say in Loire, Saix in Tarn and Vienne, Le Saix in Hautes-Alpes, or Les Saix in Isère.William Say of Bristol, England, was a member of the Society of Friends who settled in America toward the close of the 17th century. His descendant Thomas Say (1787–1834) of Philadelphia is known as the father of descriptive entomology in America.

English (mainly East Anglia)
English (mainly East Anglia) : metonymic occupational name for a sailor, from Middle Dutch hoey ‘cargo ship’.Northern Irish : variant of Howey 2 and Haughey.Scottish : habitational name from some unidentified minor place named Hoy, or from the Orkney island of Hoy, which was named in Old Norse as Háey, from há ‘high’ + ey ‘island’.Danish (Høy) : nickname for a tall person, from høj ‘high’.
Surname or Lastname
Korean
Korean : there is one Chinese character for the Son surname. Some sources mention as many as 118 clans for the Son family, but only seven can be documented. According to legend, the Son clan’s founding ancestor was named Kuryema and was one of the six pre-Shilla elders who made Pak HyÅkkÅse the first king of Shilla. The first documented ancestor, however, was called Sun. Sun is said to have lived a poverty-stricken existence in the Shilla period. His son was a voracious eater and ate Sun’s old mother’s food as well as his own. Sun, feeling that he could always get another son but that his mother was irreplaceable, decided to go into the mountains to bury his son. When he dug into the ground, however, he found a bell. He hung the bell on a nearby tree and rang it. So loud and clear was the cry of the bell that the king heard it in the palace below and came to investigate. The king was amazed at the bell and gave Sun a house and food. Later, a Buddhist temple was built on that spot. The founding ancestor of the Iljik (or Andong) Son clan originally bore the surname Sun, but during the reign of KoryÅ king HyÅnjong (1009–1031), Sun was changed to Son.English : from Middle English sone ‘son’, hence a distinguishing epithet for a son who shared the same personal name as his father.Jewish (Ashkenazic) : variant of Sohn, or Sonn.
