    A bicycle or tricycle adapted for common roads rather than for the racing track.

  • Velocipede

    A light road carriage propelled by the feet of the rider. Originally it was propelled by striking the tips of the toes on the roadway, but commonly now by the action of the feet on a pedal or pedals connected with the axle of one or more of the wheels, and causing their revolution. They are made in many forms, with two, three, or four wheels. See Bicycle, and Tricycle.

    Land adjoining a road or highway; the part of a road or highway that borders the traveled part. Also used ajectively.

    In railroads, the bed or foundation on which the superstructure (ties, rails, etc.) rests; in common roads, the whole material laid in place and ready for travel.

  • Viaduct

    A structure of considerable magnitude, usually with arches or supported on trestles, for carrying a road, as a railroad, high above the ground or water; a bridge; especially, one for crossing a valley or a gorge. Cf. Trestlework.

    A horse that is accustomed to traveling on the high road, or is suitable for use on ordinary roads.

    Ascending; going up; as, an uphill road.
