(1) sideburns (or any facial/cheek hair that doesn't quite form a beard). The term was a contraction of 'bugger-grips' as they were something to hang on to while in the act. By definition, anyone who had sideburns then became a 'gripper'. (2) In South Wales, also means an old person, usually male. Probably to do with the way they're always gripping onto handrails etc. with their bony knuckles, but also implies a certain scariness, like they're gonna come and 'grip' you if you play football outside their house.
