Used as in being "up to wazoo" in something, i.e. metaphorically deeply involved as in "Up to the wazoo in the drug scene", or literally, as in "The basement had cockroaches up the wazoo." or "The pipe was leaking out the wazoo.". The contributor heard this term in the 1980's in Brooklyn, when I worked for a real estate developer. He thinks it may be contractor slang, but has been around and in general use for a long time. At least back to the turn of the century.
(v.) To weaken or make less dangerous in the interest of game balance. The term came about in gaming because the Nerf company creates harmless versions of harmful devices (swords, guns, etc). Hence, if a game developer makes a weapon less dangerous, it has “nerfed†that item. Mind you, this does not only apply to items and equipment; it also applies to classes, spells, etc. Definition taken from Nerfbat.
n public address system. The odd name derives rather simply from the fact that a company called Tannoy were among the more prominent early developers of such a device.
