Was for many years the term of choice in the UK for describing the 'characteristic homosexual behaviours' such as assumed effeminacy but was supplanted by the US term 'gay'. Hence the expression to 'camp it up', and the 'hidden' joke in the film title 'Carry on Camping'. The word (and many other underground gay terms) was popularised and brought to general public attention and useage by the late 1950's radio show 'Round the Horne'.
