  • McGarrett
  • McGarrett

fifty pounds (£50). Initially London slang, especially for a fifty pound note. McGarret refers cunningly and amusingly to the popular US TV crime series Hawaii Five-0 and its fictional head detective Steve McGarrett, played by Jack Lord. The series was made and aired originally between 1968 and 1980 and developed a lasting cult following, not least due to the very cool appeal of the McGarrett character. Steve McGarrett was given the legendary line (every week virtually) "Book 'em Danno," - or "Book him Danno," - depending on the number of baddies they caught. Danno (Detective Danny Williams, played by James MacArthur) was McGarrett's unfailingly loyal junior partner. For the record, the other detectives were called Chin Ho Kelly (the old guy) and Kono Kalakaua (the big guy), played by Kam Fong and Zulu, both of which seem far better character names, but that's really the way it was. • 5 - 0

    n. (pronounced "five oh") A policeman or the police. 5-0 was derived here in Cali with artists like Too $hort, Spice 1, and NWA. It comes from the old school Highway Patrol cars which were 5.0 Mustangs back in the late 80's and 90's, hence the term 5-0. It was also coupled with the term used in the television show Hawaii Five-O.  "Watch out! 5-0!"

  • methamphetamine
  • methamphetamine

Also known as speed, this drug is a stimulant that is the amphetamine of choice for street use. At one time methamphetamine was prescribed for use as a diet pill, but it is no longer used therapeutically. Methamphetamine may be taken in a variety of ways: by mouth, injection, snorting, or smoking. Methamphetamine is easily synthesized, making its illicit manufacture for sale on the street relatively simple. Prior to the popularity of cocaine, methamphetamine was the most commonly used stimulant. The effects and dangers of methamphetamine use are characteristic of other stimulants. However, chronic users of methamphetamine typically develop delusions of bugs crawling under their skin, leading the user to scratch the skin repeatedly and cause characteristic lesions. Another complication is the formation of local dilations of small arteries, resembling a naturally occurring illness called periarteritis nodosa, which can lead to kidney failure or brain hemorrhages. These two complications are rarely seen with other stimulants. Like "crack" cocaine, crystals of the drug, called "ice", can be smoked, with an immediate effect similar to direct intravenous injection. The difference between "ice" and "crack" is that the methamphetamine high lasts for hours rather than the shorter cocaine high. "Ice" originated in Hawaii in 1987 but has since spread east across parts of the mainland United States. Although it was feared that "ice" might replace "crack," this has not yet happened.

Two theories (so far). : (1) derived from a none to bright character called Benny on UK soap "Crossroads" (2) from the 1960's speed derivative benzedrine, commonly known as bennys. Hence "to have a benny fit" etc. If you've ever seen someone who's had too much billy, the meaning becomes obvious. (ed: we await the inevitable argument )
