    – Well, of course, it’s an awful affliction that used to bedevil buccaneers in days gone by; that’s one reason there was lime juice added to the rum in the water, making grog. So calling someone a “scurvy bilge rat” is even worse than calling him a “bilge rat.”

  • mattress man
  • mattress man

Term denoting a particularly egregious form of wanker, At school during the summer they would leave the fire exit door at the end of the dining hall open for ventilation. Through it you could see the fire escape for one of the boarding houses. This house (North 'A') was traditionally known for its sexual deviancy (eg amongst its members it was prized to be invited to join the Ginger Pubes Club). One summer evening during the second sitting of dinner a commotion was caused as large numbers of diners were congregating by the door in awful fascination at the sight on the North 'A' fire escape. PD (who's name I finally removed - also used interchangeably with the more generic "Mattress Man"), having eaten in the first sitting had retired to the fire escape for a quick one off the wrist. In the throes of passion he chanced upon a discarded mattress leaning against the wall in the fire escape and vented his passions upon it fairly vigorously. Apart from half the school witnessing this so did most of the teachers who had to come over to see what was causing the commotion in the dining hall. Subsequently even they called him Mattress Man. Needless to say he left the school soon after. This was at The Leys in Cambridge.

  • wee

1 adj Scottish small: That’s an awfully wee car - are you sure you’ll all fit in it? In a loose sense it could also be interpreted as meaning “cute” in the “cute and cuddly” sense. You could tell someone they had a “nice wee dog,” but might meet with more curious glances if you used it in a more serious scenario: “Well, Mrs. Brown, I’m sad to tell you that you have a wee tumour on your cerebral cortex.” 2 v urinate: Back in a minute, I’m going to have a wee.

  • Bloody
  • Bloody

One of the most useful swear words in English. Mostly used as an exclamation of surprise i.e. "bloody hell" or "bloody nora". Something may be "bloody marvellous" or "bloody awful". It is also used to emphasise almost anything, "you're bloody mad", "not bloody likely" and can also be used in the middle of other words to emphasise them. E.g. "Abso-bloody-lutely"! Americans should avoid saying "bloody" as they sound silly.

Usually seen in the context of upper-middle-class people referring to the working-classes: Well, yes, Mildred - my Jeremy used to be such a sensible boy but now he’s got mixed up with this awful crowd of yobbos! The derivation of the word is apparently modified back-slang - the moniker “boyo” became “yobbo.” Amusingly, in New York City slang, “yobbos” are breasts. Not in the U.K.

  • No Names, No Pack-Drill
  • No Names, No Pack-Drill

Means to say nothing, and avoid repercussions. This term comes from the Army, specifically the British Army. However it is often used by members of the RCN to this day. Pack-drill was a punishment given to soldiers requiring them to undertake drill in full uniform and carrying a heavy pack. "No names, no pack-drill" was used to imply that the names of those who have committed a transgression will not be mentioned in order to spare them from the awful punishment.
