I'm not quite certain of his definition but he may say, for example, "I don't like going out in Leeds on a Saturday night because it's full of townies" - meaning more like the general 'locals' of any social class, age, dress-style., Sorry for the lengthy explanation! What fascinates me most about this word is the way it was used consistently by people in the area I lived in when I was a younger teenager and then suddenly, within about a year, everyone was using 'scally' instead and 'townie' had become an almost uncool thing to say. I remember thinking to myself - I must start trying to say 'scally' instead of 'townie' so that I sound cool.
