American-made 7.62mm (.308 cal) machine gun. Pg. 515
A long time. Not just 60 seconds. "Dang! I haven't seen you in a minute, girl, where you been?"Â
A long time. Not just 60 seconds. "Dang! I haven't seen you in a minute, girl, where you been?"Â
Two variations were in use in Vietnam
the MK 1 and the MK 2. Standard armament -- twin .50 caliber machine guns forward, M-60 machine gun and M-18 grenade launcher midships, and a single .50 machine gun at the stern. Many different variations of armament were arranged by the crews.
v. an unintentionally performed hardness test rendered by a trial side object on your anatomy or possesions. Requires the use of a number to rate the event. "I 50 Rockwelled on that last buster." "No way, dude, it was at least a 60!"
millimeters, as in "..a 60 Mike Mike" (60mm mortar).
A measure of length or distance. Equivalent to (UK) 1/10 nautical mile, approx. 600 feet; (USA) 120 fathoms, 720 feet (219 m); other countries use different values.
A manned aircraft can launch within five minutes. The Navy has time restrictions as to how long a crew can stand an Alert5 watch. Similarly, Alert 15, Alert 30, Alert 60.
Browning Automatic Rifle, .30 cal, heavy, shoulder fired weapon, used in WWII and Korea. The M-14 sought to combine the firepower BAR with portablilty of the M-1. The M-60 machinegun replaced both the BAR and the Browning light machinegun.
LRRPs usually operated in teams of 5 or 6 guys. On occasion, when it was *known* the team was going to be in deep shit, they were assigned 10. This was commonly called a heavy team. It was more difficult to hide, but the additional M-60 machine gun and other firepower made the inconvenience worth the trouble.
Short for the oft-used operational area W-601 which was located seaward from the Straits of Juan de Fuca, off the west coast of Vancouver Island. The area was decommissioned in the 1990s.
To waffle means to talk on and on about nothing. It is not something you eat. Americans often think that Brits waffle on about the weather. The truth of course is that our news reports last 60-120 seconds and the weather man is not hyped up to be some kind of superstar as he is on the TV in the US. If you want to see an example of real waffle watch the weather channel in Texas where there is nothing to talk about other than it is hot and will remain so for the next 6 months. Another example is the ladies who waffle on about anything on the Home Shopping Network. They would probably be classed as professional wafflers!
