I am seeking an ABA Assistant with experience working with teenagers and young adults who need a bit of extra support to join a fantastic small special school in Wandsworth. The school is for young people aged 19-25 with Autism, Severe Learning Difficulties and Speech Language and Communication Needs.

Through an individualised personal curriculum, the students follow a programme of study that best prepares them for adulthood, focusing on the skills required for independent or supported living, training and employment, health and wellbeing and community participation.By providing just enough support they are preparing their students for their lives after education.

The ABA Assistant role involves supporting a young adult in the Post-19 service and out in the community. Working with a team of Teaching and Learning Mentors, you will provide excellent support using the methods of Behaviour Analysis teaching to an autistic young adult and associated learning difficulties. You will support the Behaviour Analyst and Advanced Skills Practitioner in ensuring the daily needs of the students are met in a professional, competent, safe and fun environment within the Post-19 service. You will need to follow the principles of Behaviour Analysis to enable the students to access learning in a way that allows them to learn new skills at their own pace. Further training on Behaviour Analysis in an adult setting will be given to the successful candidate.

    What is Behaviour Analysis?

Practice guided by Behaviour Analysis is a teaching approach that takes the scientific principles of learning and behaviour, and applies them in practice to teach important skills, personalised to an individual. It can also be used to help reduce behaviours that challenge or that limit opportunities by teaching functional alternatives. Behaviour Analysis helps us to understand how learning takes place, and how behaviour can be affected by the environment.

The school uses teaching strategies underpinned by Behaviour Analysis and guided by the science of Applied Behaviour Analysis and Verbal Behaviour, to teach its learners social, communication, academic and daily living skills tailored according to their specific needs.

You will use behaviour analysis to track progress and create positive, fun and motivating educational and learning experiences that make a real difference to your learners' lives. Complex skills are broken down and taught step-by-step including daily living skills, communication, functional academic skills and social skills, to ultimately empower the learners to be as independent as possible, access their local communities and make informed choices about their ideal week.

    The School

The school an is an outstanding special school for children and young people with a diagnosis of autism and related speech language and communication needs. You will be based at their Post 19 hub which is in Wandsworth and is well served by public transport links.

The curriculum is highly focused on communication skills and social development, whilst the full breadth of the curriculum including core subjects, the arts and life skills etc. This is all planned, taught and delivered with the development of communication strategies and social skills in mind.

Pupils are working significantly below their age related expectations and need support, guidance and encouragement to tackle fresh challenges. Time for pick up of ideas needs to be built into planning and resources to engage the senses, retain attention and link thematics are important to the delivery of lessons.

This is a school that encourages the creativity of staff and the forging of close bonds between staff and pupils to ensure that their pupils feel relaxed, reassured, valued and heard.
