- 45% of mums still have incontinence 7 years later⠀

This is the week dedicated to raising awareness and chatting about all the things that we are often far to British to mention, too embarrassed to seek help on or not even aware we can get help for.

The facts in the images are rather eye opening right? Anyone shocked 🙋🏻‍♀️ Nearly HALF of women still having incontinence 7 years postnatally - think about your NCT group or local mum friends, half of them are still leaking urine or  faeces when they really don't want to! 
I'm more than shocked, I'm deeply saddened that as society we've let it be this way. So let's this week spread the work - follow the campaign led by @pelvicroar & @kegel8uk

Incontinence is any accidental or involuntary loss of urine from the bladder (urinary incontinence) or bowel motion, faeces or wind from the bowel.

Some people may feel embarrassed about their own incontinence issues and fell isolated but its more common then you think.

Almost 6 million Australians experience incontinence issues, that is about 1 in 3 Australians (38%), with women who have had a baby being at a slightly higher risk.

You would think that with such a high rate people would be seeing someone to help manage this. .
But you would be wrong as (62%) of individuals with incontinence symptoms never seek professional help, this is despite evidence that incontinence can be better treated, managed and, in many cases, can even be cured at any age.

Increasing pressure of the growing uterus and fetal weight on Pelvic floor muscles (PFM) throughout pregnancy, together with pregnancy-related hormonal changes, may lead to reduced strength of the supportive and sphincteric function of PFM. When intra-abdominal pressure increases, pressure inside the bladder becomes greater than the urethral closure pressure, and the urethral sphincter is not strong enough to close the urethra, resulting in urine leakage. Pelvic floor muscle exercise is an effective treatment for SUI during pregnancy and has no adverse effects. Continence can be improved when incontinent pregnant women adequately perform PFME (Sangsawang, 2013). -
Pregnancy increases the risk of urinary and fecal incontinence due
to increased pressure on the pelvic floor. 
# ✨A cesarean section delivery does not decrease the risk of urinary or fecal incontinence compared to pregnancy with a vaginal delivery. ✨

1. Stay hydrated, drink plenty of fluid - around 2 litres per day. Don’t hold back and try to limit your trips to the loo, your bladder needs to learn what full fees like. 
2. Take care about what you drink. Be aware of irritants and diuretics like caffeine, alcohol and carbonated drinks.
3. Don’t go to the loo “just in case!” Learn the difference between when you could go and should go.
4. Spend time on your pelvic floor exercises and be mindful that the quality of your exercise is more important than quantity... squeeze and lift! Consult a women’s health physio to assess your pelvic floor!
5. Learn to engage your pelvic floor and’ protect yourself’ during activities where you feel vulnerable to leakage like laughing or lifting, until it becomes instinctive. X

Or when you gotta go—you gotta go or you leak on the way from urge incontinence???? It’s #worldincontinenceweek and I’m here to shed some light. Loss of urine or feces when you cough, sneeze or laugh (stress related) or #urgeincontinence are major quality of life issues for many women. In fact, 11-45% of women state they have incontinence with intercourse that leads to various forms of sexual dysfunction and embarrassment!  Risk factors are similar to pelvic organ prolapse that I discussed in a previous post. Obesity, pregnancy, parity, increased intraabdominal pressure, postmenopausal status,and collagen disorders to name a few .  Treatment strategies include behavioral modifications, sanitary napkins#poisepads ,Pelvic floor physical therapy, sometimes topical estrogen, medications (such as ssnri’s, alpha androgenic agonists etc), some pessaries, surgery, and there is some promise with laser therapy and urge symptoms related to menopause. About 20 odd years ago I worked on a little magazine for the then governing body of exercise and we highlighted this very same week then. But it was only us and then version of #UKCS that were at all 🙋🏻‍♀️ out there. Now, I’m pleased to say that I can stand on stage with a Vagina in my hand and shout out with so much more conviction that we NEED to talk about this! That’s because the issue is bigger than ever  but thanks to the likes of @megsmenopause we are a little less reserved in all this stuff. 1-3 women and 1-10 men suffer from incontinence. It’s now more common than hay fever and it costs the NHS millions that, if we we all were taught how to look after our pelvic health, it wouldn’t need to spend. Let’s just make this clear - PADS are not your friend! They simply mask the problem and if they encourage you to be active whilst using them, they are gonna make things WORSE! So get your self armed with more knowledge from the likes of me and all of these guys @physiomumuk @mothers.wellness.toolkit @thedoctormummy @mummy_mot @mutusystem @marianneryanpt @burrell_education and a host of others. That’s because the issue is bigger than ever  but thanks to the likes of @megsmenopause we are a little less reserved in all this stuff. 1-3 women and 1-10 men suffer from incontinence. It’s now more common than hay fever and it costs the NHS millions that, if we we all were taught how to look after our pelvic health, it wouldn’t need to spend. Let’s just make this clear - PADS are not your friend! They simply mask the problem and if they encourage you to be active whilst using them, they are gonna make things WORSE! "I laughed so hard tears ran down my leg" is now apparently available on a pretty wooden sign for just £4.49....🤔🤔🤔🤔 I get that us Brits use humour to cope with our shortcomings, failings & inadequacies BUT incontinence is NONE OF THESE. It's simply your pelvic floor saying: "Hey up, something's not quite right down here & I'm struggling to cope with the pressure you're putting on me" ^^^ if any other part of our body or our mental wellbeing flagged this cry for help, we'd ACT to heal, restore & strengthen - we seek a solution! But when it's our pelvic floor we act by making jokes & resorting to pads in our knickers. This isn't a solution. A solution IS AVAILABLE ^^^ & I can help you with that. Whether you: - leak when you sneeze, cough or laugh - leak when you lift in the gym - leak when out for run - leak when getting out of a chair - leak when lifting your baby Or any other situation.
