I’ve been lifting & playing sports since I was young. My athletic performance is at its peak & it’s completely due to my plant based diet 💛 I have better stamina, I gain muscle faster, & my recovery time is significantly quicker 🏋️‍♀️

I think it’s so important to share the other side of things and that gaining weight doesn’t have to be a BAD thing! Being “fit” isn’t a number on the scale or a certain bodyfat percentage. 🙅🏻‍♀️🙅🏻‍♀️🙅🏻‍♀️⁣

Would you believe me if I told you that there is nearly a 50lb difference between these two photos? The weight gain isn’t even the biggest difference between these two pictures. It’s the mentality. The girl on the right lifts heavy weights and exercises because it makes her feel happy and empowered. Not to lose weight or because she has to in order to look a certain way. The girl on the right goes out to eat with friends and eats whenever she’s hungry or even just when she wants to because food is delicious.

It can be quite challenging to balance fitness and eating disorder recovery because the advice is so conflicting. In the fitness world, restricting calories and excessive cardio is encouraged, however when you’re recovering from an eating disorder, that’s a hard no. Being healthy in the fitness world means eating super clean, however in the recovery world, eating ‘unhealthy’ or ‘fear foods’ is necessary. I still struggle so much to find that balance. I shift between being so happy and proud of where I am, to hating my body and wanting to lose weight. Instead of focusing on the number on the scale, I’m trying to focus on what my body can do. Pushups, pull-ups, deadlifts, sprints, etc. Yeah I’m not a size 00 anymore, but I’m a lot stronger (physically and mentally), happier, healthier, and just an overall better version of myself and I would never go back. ✌🏻💕 ⁣

Zinc is  an important mineral which is essential for immune function and the function of more than 300 enzymes related to DNA stabilization and gene expression. Moreover, it plays a significant role in growing and repairing body tissue and metabolic processes.⠀

As the body can’t store zinc, its essential to eat a sufficient amount every day. The recommended daily intake for men is 11mg and 8mg for women (unless they’re pregnant or breastfeeding).⠀

Zinc is often considered to be a critical nutrient on a vegan diet, but this is practically a non-issue if you consume zinc-rich plant foods on the daily. However, it’s important to be aware of the fact that some of these foods are high in phytates, which can result in a decreased bioavailability of the zinc they contain. This is why 12mg daily are recommended for female vegans and 16.5mg daily for male vegans.⠀

In order to remedy that, it’s best to always consume these foods together with foods rich in Vitamin C and protein. Morever, it’s best to avoid drinking caffeeinated beverages 1 hour before and after the meal.⠀

Fun fact: I eat 250g of oats and 1tbsp hemp seeds every morning, so I’m already getting in ~10mg of zinc. Taking into account the bioavailability of these zinc sources, I typically reach 60% of my RDI just with my breakfast. 🙂💪⠀

Athletes usually have higher zinc requirements though, which is why supplementation can be a wise choice for us vegan athletes.⠀

Ingredients:
* 2 cups flour (see note)
* 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
* 3/4 tsp salt
* 1/4 tsp baking soda
* 1 cup sugar (or xylitol for sugar free)
* 3/4 cup milk of choice
* 1/2 cup plain yogurt, such as almondmilk yogurt
* 1/4 cup oil (or sub applesauce for fat free)
* 1/4 cup lemon juice
* zest of 1 large or 2 small lemons (1 tbsp total – don’t omit)
* 1 tsp pure vanilla extract

Instructions:
The recipe works with spelt, white, oat, or gf all purpose flour. It technically works with almond flour (and tastes delicious) but won’t rise or look pretty. I prefer the oil version’s flavor and texture, but if you’re used to the texture of oil free baked goods it’s fine to sub applesauce.
Preheat oven to 350 F. Grease a 9×5 loaf pan. In a large bowl, combine all dry ingredients. Whisk liquid ingredients in a separate bowl, combine wet and dry, then stir until just evenly mixed. Spread into the pan. Bake 50-55 minutes, or until loaf has risen and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. If desired, frost with either melted coconut butter or 1/2 cup powdered sugar combined with 1 tbsp milk of choice.

Routine: Dumbbell shoulder press going heavier with each set, sets as follows 20/15/12/10/10/8🦍Seated side lateral raise with 25 pound plate 4 sets 10-12🦍Standing front shoulder raises 4 sets total, with 1 set with 25 pound plates then 2 more sets of 10-12 with 45 pound plates & finally failed at 7 on my last set with 45 pound plates 🦍Smith machine shoulder press with knees on ground to touch on core 4 sets 10-12🦍 I then did 8 sets for core & 30 minutes treadmill at a moderate pace & incline. .

Shoulder day tips 💡To build muscle you don’t have to go as heavy as possible, it’s about form, tempo and time under tension, in essence focus on form. For example when doing front shoulder raises such as those pictured in the video I could have easily done working sets with a 30 pound dumbbells really focusing on form and tension and still yielded my desired results. I use the 45 pound plates as I’m a seasoned lifter, I find it to be fun and I know how my body responds, for example I keep a bend in my knees to take tension off my lower back. I wouldn’t recommend this for a beginning lifter due to potential injury.💡 Pyramid in repetitions ranging from 10-15 to recruit both fast & slow twitch muscle fiber💡Go high volume for growth with a minimum of 16 working sets per body part.

I procrastinated getting myself to the gym until about 2 (I was being productive in other ways...unpacking, laundry, cleaning). I was anxious about not hitting my old weights, which I didn't and it sucked. I've lost weight unintentionally which might seem great to a lot of people, but I've always struggled with keeping weight on and I was finally making progress before I let life get in the way. BUT I know that I can dedicate myself to lifting again and get back to my gains.

People thought I was crazy (some still do) for being vegan b/c I’m Mexican & won’t be able to eat tacos, tamales & other Mexican dishes😂. Now I find it weird that people still think that by eating a meat based taco in front of me will faze me & turn me back into eating meat 😂. So far all the years I’ve been to @socalvegfest , the first thing I buy are my all time favorite nachos from @cenavegan 🤤 & then something cute that I can take home. You can't outwork a bad diet, doesn't matter how much you try....it will eventually catch up with you.

Many people eat three times a day. It can be a challenge all by itself to get to the gym three times a week.😕. Plus, you're asking a lot out of those workouts if you want them to counter not so nutritious meals on a regular basis. ( i.e. calorie, oil, and sugar rich meals + highly processed foods).

Gotta ditch the excuses and put in that work, in the kitchen and gym, all the same.

——————————————————— INGREDIENTS ▪️ .

Cake Ingredients: 
½ cup cassava flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
¼ cup cocoa powder
½ cup coconut sugar
½ cup non dairy milk
2 tablespoons melted coconut oil

Frosting:
¼ cup nut butter
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
1 tablespoon maple syrup
⅛ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon non dairy milk
1¼ teaspoon vanilla

Extra ingredients:
½ cup 72% chocolate(like our Signature Dark bar)
Cake pop sticks

INSTRUCTIONS▪️ .

For the Cake:
Preheat oven to 350℉.
Whisk together all dry ingredients. 
Then add in the milk and oil. 
Empty into a 9 inch greased cake pan and bake for 10 minutes. Let cake cool completely

For the Frosting:
While the cake is cooling, combine all ingredients for the frosting into a medium sized bowl and mix until well incorporated

ASSEMBLE ▪️ .

Crumble the cake into the bowl with frosting in it. 
Mix until everything is combined. 
Roll into small, tight meatball shapes and place on the tray. 
Once all cake pops have been rolled out, let sit in the freezer for 20 minutes.
Once the cake pops are set up, take a cake pop stick and dip it about a 1/4″ into melted chocolate. 
Place about halfway into the cake pop. 
Once all pops have been poked, place back in the freezer for 5 minutes to let the chocolate set up.
Have your melted chocolate ready and start to dip the cake pops into it. 
Shake off the excess chocolate and then stick it with the pop right side up into styrofoam or cardboard before it completely dries.
Decorate with some small round sprinkles. Once set up, enjoy!

How are you all?! This past week has been a bit of a rollercoaster for me to be honest, yesterday I had a pretty bad day, I was playing my first match for Cambridge uni hockey 3s team so it was important I made a good impression as they’re still cutting people and I just played terribly and basically gave a goal away which was so annoying and then when we got back at around 7pm because the match was like 1.5 hours away, I had to write up notes from the lecture I missed cos of hockey which took over 2 hours 😭😭
However today has been 100x better, in the morning I went to cafe Nero to do some maths work, then I went for a lovely long run through the meadows, popped into the Cambridge vegan market and met the lovely @teamlilypop team (and got some tasty snacks!), then my hockey coach from my home team (who I’m really close with) came to see me and we went to a cafe and I got a delicious vegan cookie, I rode my bike to aldi to get my groceries, came back and did some physiology work, played some Pictionary with my friends and now I’m tucking into a delicious tomato pea curry which I will post soon 👌🏻
I probably should have done some more work today but oh well, after yesterday I needed a day to start afresh 💕

85g Tempeh
1 Cup (cooked) Brown Rice
1 Cup Broccoli
200g potato
2 tbsp Tahini

PROCEDURE:
The tempeh was seasoned with liquid aminos and sauteed in a bit of oil. The potato was poked with a fork and microwaved for 5 min, flipping halfway through. Broccoli and rice (already made) heated in the microwave. Tahini was mixed with water to make into sauce.

vegainz When I first ever stepped into the gym I had no idea what I was doing and boy was it scarry 😆 I remember walking my way to the bench press looking at the floor to not make any eye contact and as I attempted lifting the bar I ended up just stuck on the bench for 20 min till someone realized and helped get the bar off for me.... -

I felt so embarrassed at the time but Now I laugh about it every time. You see I could have chosen to never walk in the gym again or go back and try again. In me I knew it was what was right for me, for my health and my dreams. So I went again....

Don’t be afraid to start! The only way you will learn is if you start doing it. You are there for yourself. Stop listening to the doubts and excuses in your head that are stopping you from achieving your dreams. This is one of the greatest lessons the gym has taught me and it’s a skill to be carried through all your life !!!✨✨✨💕💕

Die Musik die du hörst, hat aber auch Auswirkungen auf deine Leistungsfähigkeit. 
Musik die du magst, motiviert dich zusätzlich. Dadurch steigt deine Ausdauer und der Erschöpfungszustand setzt später ein. Außerdem ist deine Risikobereitschaft höher. Du traust dir mehr zu. 
Aber das wichtige dabei ist. Wir haben Spaß unsere Lieblingsmusik zu hören. Dabei werden automatisch Endorphine freigesetzt. Dies bewirkt, dass wir mehr auf die positiven Aspekte des Trainings achten. 
Die Emotionen die dabei ausgelöst werden, haben auch Einfluss auf unseren Körper.  Aufmerksamkeit und Konzentration nimmt zu

Muskeltonus verändert sich

vegainz We made it through our half marathon today. Rachel and Clay really kept me motivated while training for this event, and I’m so happy we got to do this together!

I ran my first 5k in March, and before 2019 I had never run a mile without walking or stopping. Today, I ran the entire half. 
I’m so glad we got to enjoy downtown Denver and City Park. Shoutout to everyone who encouraged us the past few months and checked in on us today. Y’all are a real blessing.

vegainz These sets were frustrating - went off of 85% of my estimated 1RM putting me at 455 for the first set of Deadlifts on a plate. Those 2 reps were rough and going that heavy felt unfamiliar but not impossible, and the next 3 sets took me completely by surprise where I had to drop to 445 and barely got 1 rep in.

Next time I know to start lower and if it's feeling easy I'll make the climb again.

Now, with all the veggie options coming out, with every supermarket having about 15 varieties of dairy free milk, and rarely having to resort to chips or falafel and hummus sandwiches when eating out, you can tell that change is happening, and it’s happening now🌱

Yo!!! I walked into the gym this morning walking so much taller after watching the documantary The Game Changers on @netflix !!!! I honestly thought I could go the rest of my life without watching another documantary about the benefits of a plant based diet, I was soooooooo wrong!!! This documantary opened my eyes to exactly how animal protein vs plant protein effect our bodies! Definitely check it out!!!

I ended todays workout with this delicious smoothie! Spinach, strawberries, bananas, water and @drinkorgain vanilla protein powder! Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that is needed for normal blood-clotting (which is required for wound healing) as well as to ensure optimal bone health (low vitamin K levels are associated with an increeased risk of osteoporosis and arthritis).⠀

There are two different typese of vitamin K, namely K1 and K2. Vitamin K1 is predominantly found in dark leafy greens and other vegetables whereas vitamin K2 is only found in small amounts in animal-based foods as well as some fermented foods such as sauerkraut.⠀

Interestingly, vitamin K1 is converted into vitamin K2 by our gut bacteria.⠀

Went 5/6 on the day with a 1lb snatch Pr and 3? third place medals. (I think they bought too many.) But hey.. not bad for my first weightlifting meet!

Between garbage bench press form and piss poor volleyball mechanics I fucked up my shoulder so bad that I couldn’t even raise my arm above shoulder level

Incline Bench would hurt so bad up that up until 2 months ago I didn’t train it for well over a year
.
If you’re hurt or have an muscle imbalance ask somebody who knows what they’re doing to help
.
If you don’t know how to perform an exercise ASK FOR FUCKING HELP! .
It’s taken me 2 year to get back to this point and let me tell you, it was not worth it
.
The amount of gainzzzz I left on the table because of a fucked up shoulder was unreal
.
Being able to finally incline bench 135 again is such a relief and I’m gonna celebrate this victory 🔥🤙🏼

vegainz This is a question many people have, especially those who are serious about lifting💪🏼 In general there does not seem to be difference in macro requirements at all between males & females.
Where I do see it mattering is when dieting down for bodybuilding contests or other forma of extreme activity. Female bodybuilders really seem to have much bigger side effects (such as losing period) when getting down to that “unnatural” body-fat % level.
🔑Your macro requirements don't depend on your gender, they depend on factors like lean body mass, digestive health, physical activity😄

If you want to get better at something, you have to work at it consistently. Thinking about competing? Deep into an improvement season? Don’t know when your next show is? Doesn’t matter... PRACTICE NOW! 🙌

Here are 5️⃣ of my favorite posing tips for all my competitor ladies out there:

1️⃣ Believe in yourself. Confidence starts with the mind! You have to understand that you ARE beautiful inside and out - then you just let it shine! 🌟 
2️⃣ Don’t be afraid of messing up. If you were perfect you wouldn’t need to practice, right? You WILL mess up. Laugh a little and start over!
3️⃣ Practice your walk AND full routine!!! You’re judged from the moment you step on stage so be ready from start to finish. 
4️⃣ Record yourself! This allows you to see yourself in a different light and from the judges angles!
LASTLY....
5️⃣ Practice without the mirror! FEEL the movements. It’s less of a “pose” and more of a “graceful dance”.
