sleepdeprived Today was hard. Parenting is hard. Lack of sleep is a form of torture and I’m not surprised, it just kills you. I’m not one to moan and when people ask how I am I say ‘fine,’ with a smile. 😊Makeup hides the dark circles. But today I wasn’t fine. I felt like I hit a wall and felt a bit lost as to what to do. My husband and I have lost so much sleep it’s ridiculous and there’s no sign of any change to Elodie’s sleeping pattern. .
I just let myself be ‘not fine’ for a while and it helped. I managed to get 20 minutes to put some makeup on without rushing and that helped. All of your kind messages in response to my story helped and getting out of the house to somewhere important to us helped. And I reminded myself that one day she’ll sleep through the night and we’ll look back at this and it will seem like a really short length of time.

I’m ok now. 😊 And these are my day 5 curls only smoothed over with 3 drops of @olewhair Original and the front clipped back. Not too shabby. 😊 Oh and I got a new mascara and lipstick, both of which I love! @lorealmakeup Paradise Mascara and @maybelline Color Sensational Matte Lipstick in Clay Crush.

❤️ this from @kaitlin.vanosch #repost⠀ It's the most common question I get in my inbox: how to respond to family/in laws/friends who don't respect our parenting choices.⠀ ⠀ It's a tough situation to be in, especially when motherhood is already so rife with insecurity and self doubt. A lot of people don't understand why we won't "just" do cry it out (or why we don't punish or praise or use consequences or give time outs or touch our kids without permission or distract them from crying etc!).⠀ ⠀ I've recently begun delving into the Non Violent Communication work of Marshall Rosenberg (HIGHLY recommend!). The next time someone offers you unsolicited advice, or does something you've already made clear is not ok for you, using his work is a really powerful way to get your point across clearly & respectfully. For example:⠀ ⠀ "You are offering advice that goes against my parenting values/ I noticed you did xyz, something I've already explained isn't in line with my parenting values (identify the behaviour in a non judgemental way). This makes me feel (frustrated, insecure, belittled, unappreciated, misunderstood..name your emotion). I need to feel supported in my role as (Liv's) mother (express your need).⠀ ⠀ It's helpful consider what need is driving the other person's behaviour. Even though the actual behaviour might have crossed your boundaries, the need behind that behaviour is neither good nor bad. We can all relate to having needs. Try to remember that behind everyone's behaviour is a small child doing what they've always done to get their needs met. It's rarely malicious, and almost always just survival.⠀ ⠀ You can add the following: "I do believe you are just trying to help. Going forward, doing xyz would be helpful AND leave me feeling supported."⠀ ⠀ Or - "I believe you want what's best for (Liv) and our family. Moving forward, doing xyz is what we have decided is best for us in this situation."⠀ ⠀ NVC doesn't guarantee that anyone will listen/do what you want, but then again, neither does any other approach I've come across. It is, however, great practice in identifying emotions and needs, and role modeling very clear, respectful, conflict resolution skills.

Since when is it a bad habit to connect with your child and give them support when they need it? Would we say that it will create bad habits if we hug & comfort our child who had a really hard day? Should we stop changing our child's diaper for fear that it will create bad habits? Maybe we should stop carrying our baby from place to place in case they get used to it and never learn to walk by themselves. These comparisons might sound unrelated to you, but they are actually very similar. We don't expect our children to be able to do everything independently (at least we shouldn't!) because the progression of these skills are developmental. ⠀
⠀
We understand that many skills like self-feeding, toileting, getting dressed, and walking cannot be expected immediately. Why do we think that self-regulation and the ability to fall asleep independently is so different? It IS a bit more complex for sure because the ability to fall asleep independently is based on so many different factors. Unlike crawling, walking, and self-feeding, there is not a definitive age that we can expect children to be able to do this. But the best way we can help them to be more independent (in their own time, when they are ready) is to invite them to depend on us, to support them to sleep until they no longer need it, to give them more connection & proximity than they are asking for so that they feed safe, secure & confident in venturing forth and becoming their own independent person. ⠀

Supporting your child to sleep in any way is not a bad habit. In fact, it really is normal. But, there is not just one way to support your child to sleep. You can find a way that you love so that you look forward to bedtime! If you don't love the way you are currently supporting your child to sleep, there is always opportunity to shift those patterns that are no longer working for your family in a loving & respectful way. sleepdeprived ~ DROWSY BUT AWAKE ~

What exactly does this even mean? It honestly is a confusing phrase. I had a lot of questions come through on my q&a regarding this so I thought I’d help out by doing a bit of a break down.

Drowsy but awake is essentially where you start with teaching your little one to self settle. But when is your little one drowsy? 
For some babies there is asleep or awake, no in between. Well ideally “drowsy” would be when your little one is calm, relaxed and starting to get heavy eyed, but their eyes aren’t closed.

At this point you would place your little one into their cot and start some hands on settling. 
How do you get your baby to this drowsy state? 
Just as you would normally get them to sleep, rocking, feeding, patting etc. but stop when they get to this drowsy state and start your hands on settling.

A great starting point is to Implement a wind down routine and age appropriate routine. This wind down routine will become so reassuring for your little one and you will notice the minute you walk Into their room, turn on the white noise or pull out their sleeping bag, they start rubbing their eyes. When done repeatedly, they eventually pick up on what is happening and what is about to happen. SLEEP 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Once they are familiar with this wind down routine and aren’t over or under tired due to following a routine appropriate for their age, you can start working on putting them down less and less drowsy. 
Again, this is not something you must do, if what you are doing what is working for you. 
This is just a nice starting point if you are looking at starting some self settling and works well from 4-6 months.

Sleep has been hard for us. Our baby first battled reflux which kept him up. Now, sleep regression. Parenting is a lot of work. It’s the best work- but it is not easy. Nothing worth having in life is easy. 
Here’s to my beautiful baby boy, who tonight will begin sleep training. I for one am in the camp of needing more sleep, and had I of not reached out for help at the time, I very quickly would have hit a state of burnout and potential post natal depression. Please do not feel guilt or shame in reaching out when things get too much, finding the right sleep consultant for you means you won’t have to compromise on the way you want to parent you children.

Darkness in the evening promotes the release of the sleep hormone melatonin that starts our “going to sleep process” way before bedtime. 🌝🌚🌙 Melatonin regulates our sleep and contributes iim other ways to healing of the body.

Maintaining a dark room helps us get to sleep and stay asleep. Having heavy curtains that block early morning sunlight ☀️ can make a big difference to how much sleep we get.

Making sure that standby lights from TV’s or lights from alarm clocks are not in the line of sight can also be helpful. 
If you’re sensitive to light try an eye mask 😎, it might take all the difference.

I am using my eye mask with increased regularity as I find I get a much better night’s sleep when using it.  It takes a little bit of getting used to but it deepens the darkness.

You may need to try different masks before finding the perfect one. It needs to be big enough to sit flat against your face, preventing light leakage around the edges, you also need to make sure the band is comfortable.

sleepdeprived Sleep deprivation is a insane,  and as a new parent it was unavoidable. 
I look back with amazement that I didn't crash on the way to work or have a serious accident when I was there. Thankfully we only experience it now when they are Ill.

My heart goes out to those still in the trenches of early parenting. Just know the twisted thinking isn't permanent, and don't make any rash decisions while your suffering. Too many families dont make it because of the added strain on the relationship. It's not forever,  and sanity will return at some point and you'll be stronger for the experience

Where I was: • 😩Sleep deprived & exhausted from 3 kids and work. • 🥴Suffering from high stress causing major health problems. • 😢Unhappy and unsatisfied with life. Lack of self-confidence. • Where I am NOW: • ❤️Getting the best sleep of my life and I have enough energy to work, keep up, and care for my 3 kids👦🏽👧🏽👦🏽 • 😄My stress levels have definitely gone down by taking control on my life. Losing weight, getting the proper nutrition & am able to exercise to help reduce that stress. Let me add, I exercise because I want to and not because I’m forced to🙌🏼 I ❤️ 🏃🏻‍♀️ running! • 🥰I am a happier person to be around! My family gets to have the full potential mother and wife I am meant to be. My self-confidence has increased and I have learned to love myself, just the way I am. Just a thought running through my heart. I think that we put so much pressure on ourselves and inturn eachother to fit these roles that can't be achieved. Struggle to do everything right, picture perfect, effortless, and carefree in the eyes of others. Sharing mostly our yes moments and none of the chaos. We all know it ain't so... There is struggle everyday. Big or small, victories and defeats, but we make it through. Most of us will never feel like the perfect mom we want to be always striving for more..but I think the truth is we are. We are the perfect mom for our little ones who don't expect anything more then love n cuddles. To hold our hands and sleep to our heartbeats. To tell silly stories and jump in puddles. So stop the daily pressure on yourself and enjoy the moments if you are feeling overwhelmed. Some of you have figured this out long ago, and to the mom's like me learning to let go of our expectations: You are doing great and I think you are perfectly imperfect! sleepdeprived Went to the zoo with my little one today, I still can't believe he is already 4 months old 🥰🦒🦓🦁 I'm not going to lie I felt really sad being there. MN mom's have you been to this zoo lately? It looks really run down, the animals looked depressed. We stopped at the gift shop to sponsor an animal, didn't know what else to do to help. Никогда не думала, что буду этим страдать. Вообще то я из той оперы людей, которые вообще не чуткие во сне. Хоть танец пляши. Думаю, что за бессонница?! что люди такое выдумали 😂Но все так было до беременности. Точнее сказать до второго семестра и пошло поехало. Первый семестр я глубоко жила в царстве Морфея и самые интенсивные месяца на ферме прошли в полусне 😴. И тут я думаю, наверное это беременность, вот рожу и красота будет! (беременный мозг, как говорят, всякого придумает. 🤪 )

И здесь дело не в том, что моя бейби мало спит с самого рождения. А в том, что даже когда она спит я не могу уснуть. Или  бывает лежу по 2ч в кровате - без тел, без книги, в темноте с блекаутами и ноль на массу. Бывает помогает sleepy tea. #Йога 🧘🏻‍♀️ на ночь помогает через раз. Раньше, если бессонница и была, крайне редко, то йога помогала отключиться на раз-два. Здесь даю подсказку тем, кто в теме йоги - это сидячие наклоны вперед. Мне лично сильно подходит или черепаха или полу-голубь, а в целом отлично заходит все, где в итоге лоб касается коврика в расслаблении. Еще ванная 🛁 помогает расслабиться хорошо

Я не смотрю фильмы, сериалы, чтобы иметь возможность таким образом отключиться. Ну крайне редко - Billions например, но когда там их снимут?)) Книги, которые я читаю наоборот будоражат и активизируют мозг. Я вообще любитель тишины и покоя. Редко фоном слушаю музыку. А, кстати, вспомнила, что часто сплю под Ом (одна и та же композиция уже лет 10), а белым шумом Веоле служит тот же Ом 😂.

Отдельным пунктом вынесу еду на ночь. За беременность я вставала минимум один, а то и 2 раза ночью поесть. И это был настоящий голод, а не из серии мне нечем заняться или я заедаю какую-то проблему. Иногда и сейчас я чувствую такую потребность, понимаю, что не могу уснуть без еды. Причём обман горячим чаем сейчас не работает 🤪 Так что хлеб с маслом мое спасение и guilty pleasure.

Друзья, а что вы делаете в таких случаях? О, я вот еще прогулку на ночь вспомнила, но так как я хранитель снов Веолы, то не могу пока себе позволить такую роскошь.

This little guy who recently turned 3 decided he no longer wanted to sleep in his crib and after being the best sleeper ever for the last 2 1/2 years and sleep trained since he was six months old he climbed out of his crib. Since then, he’s not wanted to sleep in the crib or in a toddler bed or anywhere else except next to mama!

So... we’ve had a lot of sleepless nights and trying to figure out what happened. This is something I never expected after having such a good sleeper and it definitely threw me for a loop. The hardest thing for me is that when he was a newborn, lack of sleep was expected and we prepared but this happened out of nowhere and not something I envisioned and so it was such a shock.

There’s so many things that we can’t control and the more we try to control it the less they tend to go our way. I have felt so many emotions over these last few weeks (its been 31 days.. but who is counting! ha) from anger to overwhelm to upset to surprise. But what’s important is to remember that our kids pick up on everything and while I often just want to scream and tell him please go to bed and don’t wake me up I know that if I am stressed, he will be too.

As moms, its so important for us to have self care and sleep is one one of those things. However when that is not possible, other ways to be there for ourselves can be very beneficial, especially when we are dealing with health ailments and need your body to get rest. Meditation, massage and just taking time for ourselves, even if its just 5 or 10 minutes can be really helpful.

sleepdeprived We were discharged from hospital on Wednesday after 9 very tough days in hospital; physically and mentally. The last 5 days have certainly been a learning curve too. 
Nothing could have prepared us for the lack of sleep and the anxiety you feel every time you make a choice about how to look after your baby and you're not sure if you're doing the right thing or not.
The midwife weighed him yesterday though and after losing 3.5oz of his birth weight in the first 5 days, he has put on 6.5oz in the following 5 days; so I guess we must be doing something right bless him.

Honestly, I’m ready to not be pregnant anymore. Kind of wishing I could take a month long nap and wake up on my due date 😂

Nearing my final month has me worn out and in a lot of discomfort. So I’m going to rest and rest often 💤

Pregnancy is hard and different for each baby and each body. I never want anyone to glance through my feed and think I’m working out everyday achieving unrealistic things.

I try to post frequently because it helps me stay motivated and is a positive outlet for me. But I’m only working out a few times a week. Even pre-pregnancy when I was training for my spartan race I always took about 2 solid rest days.

I’m sharing this because I see a lot of frustrating posts on social media regarding fitness during pregnancy. Time and again I’ve seen posts about how you “shouldn’t let your body go” during pregnancy and shaming weight gain. How about we shouldn’t let our good habits go and understand that weight gain is healthy and inevitable?

Maintaining a healthy mental space and loving yourself through a life changing transformation is far more important than impressing everyone by being “body goals” during pregnancy.
..
I’m not knocking any mamas out there killing their workouts. I’m just hoping to share a less glamorous view point to help all women, regardless of fitness level, to feel their journey is valid and know it’s okay to struggle. You don’t have to keep up with anyone, including your former self.

These sleep hygiene tips can be helpful in changing unhealthy habits and improving your sleep.

Limit naps, as these interfere with sleep.
Maintain a regular exercise routine, as it increases total sleep time, particularly the slow-wave sleep that's important for body repair and maintenance. 
Create a relaxing sleep environment.  Keep your bedroom dark, cool & quiet.
Avoid using electronics (eg. computer, TV, phones) in yourhe bedroom. This can reduce melatonin, a key hormone that regulates your body's internal clock.
Don't discuss or deal with stressful or anxiety-inducing situations before bed.
