I was chuggin’ along okay, until this summer hit. Before this, M&m were at the same school, on the same schedule. 
And then this summer I jumped into starting my own business so I can eventually spend more time with my kids (work in progress, I’m still working full time), M started at a new school with a different schedule and new nutrition needs (hello packing 2 snacks, 1 meal every day). So many things going on it’s hard to keep track!

I can’t think of lunches or dinners anymore! It’s like poof, no ideas. hahahah. 
So, anyway, I’m working on a rotation menu for school days (breakfast, breakfast snack, lunch, after-noon snack, dinner). To keep me sane. So I don’t have to think about what I’m making, and I get good at this rotation and I can make the meals fast.

You told me in stories you want it too and I’m working on it! It will have options for gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, vegetarian, etc.

Here’s my question that you can answer in my stories. Do you want to have the option of being an early purchaser and getting 1 day of the rotation per week until it’s done? OR do you just want to wait until it’s all ready to go at once?

Any weight loss plan is tough to stick to and without the support of people around you, it can be even harder

If someone you know has decided to lose weight, support them. They have a plan and if they want your help they will ask. Just be there for them
.
Don’t bring it up all the time. If they have progress to share, listen and congratulate them. Don’t ask. They have put enough pressure on themselves already
.
Don’t offer unsolicited advice. Just because you are thin, it doesn’t mean that doing what you do will make them thin. If they are curious about something they’ll ask if they feel comfortable
.
Just respect their decision and help, if asked. That’s all. Take the pressure off of them and focus on your own goals 😊

So, as everyone is likely hungover today after Saturday night, let’s talk about some dietary strategies which you can implement today for preventing/curing an inevitable hangover

Studies have showed that oxidative stress is a dominating mediator of a number of the “hangover like” effects experienced from excessive chronic alcohol consumption (McCarty et al 2013). Therefore, research has shown that there are in fact dietary strategies for ameliorating the toxic effects of alcohol, in particular the consumption of antioxidant and/or anti-inflammatory foods such as fruits and vegetables (Li et al 2014, Maher 2002, Li et al 2014, Van de Loo et al 2015)
➖
For example, studies by both Dembitsky et al (2011) and Kim et al (2011) have shown that, foods such as mangos can be great sources of the specific antioxidants required to offer protection against hangovers by decreasing plasma alcohol level after excessive alcohol intake
➖
Due to alcohol often leading to dehydration (Roberts 1963), foods rich in water and/or electrolytes such as watermelon, berries, coconuts, bananas etc are other great food sources in order to rehydrate after a bender
➖
Zinc deficiency or altered zinc metabolism is frequently observed in heavy alcohol drinkers (Mohammad et al 2012) thus foods such as red meat, shellfish, nuts, eggs, dark chocolate can be great additions to ensure ye prevent deficiency
➖
Both Omega 3 & 6 -have shown to be effective at reducing alcohol-induced intestinal and liver injury following severe alcohol consumption (Nanji et al 1989, Ronis et al 2004) helping to fight inflammation (as above)
➖
Alcohol consumption has shown to acutely decrease MPS & mTOR signalling by up to 37% however lessened to 24% when taken with protein (Parr et al 2014, Steiner et al 2014) thus any high protein food during/after the consumption of excessive alcohol has the potential

The texture is a bit similar to bliss balls, but I’m calling them cookies for two reasons:⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1️⃣ There is no rule against it, and⠀
2️⃣ You press them into a cookie shape! 🍪⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then... you eat them like a cookie 🤷‍♀️ but the bottom line is that they are a LIFESAVER on busy days and you need to make them this week 😜⠀

INGREDIENTS (makes 6-8)⠀
• 3/4 cup rolled oats⠀
• 1/4 cup almond meal⠀
• 3/4 cup nut butter (I used peanut)⠀
• 1 tbsp honey⠀
• 2 tbsp chia seeds⠀
• 1 tsp vanilla essence⠀
• dash of boiling water⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
METHOD⠀
1️⃣ Warm up your nut butter, honey and vanilla essence in the microwave (~30-45 seconds).⠀
2️⃣ Mix all ingredients (except water) together in a bowl.⠀
3️⃣ Add a dash of boiling water (1 tbsp) to the mixture and stir. Add more if required to cause the batter to stick together.⠀
4️⃣ Form into small round balls and press down onto a tray before refrigerating. Enjoy! 🥰⠀

We live 25 minutes from the nearest grocery store. It can be inconvenient but we love where we live! One of the best gifts I’ve been given lately is a coupon for @hellofresh. It made me see that I can’t do it ALL at the same time and that while personal growth is so important, we need to be realistic about it for our own lifestyles as well! We need to stop COLLECTING all of the IDEAS everyone else has about how we can improve and LISTEN to our OWN guts TOO! We are all beautifully different after all!...👍🏼

1 TBD plus 1 tsp garam masala, divided

Pinch cayenne pepper (optional) 
2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
6 TBS unsalted butter, divided
1 (3-inch) cinnamon stick
1 TBS tomato paste
1 (16-oz) can  tomato sauce 
1 1/4 cups water
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 TBS freshly squeezed lemon juice
2 TBS chopped fresh cilantro

Combine 1 TBS garam masala, 1/2 tsp ground turmeric, 3/4 tsp ground cumin, & a pinch of cayenne pepper if desired in a sm bowl & set aside. Cut 2 lbs chicken into 1" pieces, add to the spices in large bowl, season with kosher salt & black pepper, & toss to evenly coat. Melt 4 TBS unsalted butter in a lg heavy-bottomed pot over med-high heat. Add the chicken & cook until browned on all sides, about 7- 8 min. Transfer the chicken to a plate; it might not be cooked through. Add the onion mixture to the pan and cook, stirring frequently, until beginning to soften, about 2 min. Add the reserved spices, 1 (3") cinnamon stick, and 1 TBS tomato paste, & cook 1 min more. Add the can of tomato sauce, 1 1/4 cups water, & the chicken and any accumulated juices, and stir to combine. Bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to maintain a simmer and cook until the sauce slightly thickens & chicken is cooked through, 8- 10 min. Meanwhile, chop 2 TBS cilantro. Add 1/2 cup heavy cream, 2 TBS unsalted butter, & 1 TBS lemon juice to the chicken, & stir to combine. Taste & season with salt as needed. HOW TO GET OFF THE EMOTIONAL EATING ROLLER COASTER~ . My DM's and email are flooded with people seeking advice for combating stress eating and emotional eating. I've also struggled with emotional eating many times in my life. . After I hung up my competition heels I fell into the habit of boredom eating, loneliness eating and eating for comfort. . I'd do amazing all day, then night came around and I'd be finishing off multiple servings of cereal despite my body receiving a proper amount of nutrients that day. I even started to look forward to this nightly routine just because it spiked all the dopamine in my brain. . Then, morning would come and I'd feel bloated and disappointed. Over and over, I had to tell myself "I'm not letting it happen again tonight". After a few months of detrimental behavior, I dove into research...Why is this happening? Why do we emotional eat? What can I do to stop this? . And that's what I'm here to help you with. Here's what I discovered: . ➡️Emotional eating happens for 3 reasons: 1) We don't feel our feelings. We put the band-aid of food on the emotion in order to distract ourselves from discomfort. 2) We fall into the restrict-binge-restrict cycle. 3) When we perceive stress the body craves food. This goes back millions of years to when we were cavemen just trying to survive. The primal brain takes over. . ➡️Knowing that, I realized what I needed to do: 1) Sit with discomfort. Ride the wave of emotions. It's painful and excruciating for sure, but it's the only way out. 2) Eat a full meal with protein, carbs and fat at regular mealtimes, even if I wasn't hungry. I needed to reset my hunger cues. 3) When overeating happens, don't restrict. The next day just try again. Don't over-exercise, don't under-eat. . ➡️Now, those steps seem easy enough, right? But there's an underlying factor: these steps require massive discipline. . I can give you all the tips in the world, like keeping your hands busy, going for a walk when the urge comes on, journaling & meditation, but it’s NOT going to help if you don’t practice DISCIPLINE! . But there are ways you can strengthen your discipline that will help with emotional eating. . CONTD IN COMMENTS⬇

Following my post this morning: "Nothing is IMPOSSIBLE the word itself says I'M POSSIBLE ~Audrey Hepburn (have always loved that lady!!) At 55, I can honestly say, there has never been a time in my life where I have felt more: - strong - confident - authentic - courageous - sophisticated - and, ohhhh so good in my skin! I actually had a word in mind to reflect what I was feeling for that last point but hesitated because... ...on second thought, you know what? Let's just roll with it... ...SEXY!! Because "sexy" is just something that naturally comes with all of the points above! And it's all come from learning to love myself for who I am and all that I am. Does that mean I have it all figured out?... ...hahaha...honestly? Absolutely not! I am a work in progress..we all are, and will be until the day I die, as I continuously and intentionally commit, every single day, to becoming the best version of me. But the journey of "unbecoming" everything that isn't truly and authentically me, and stepping into who I am meant to be in this world, in the first place, has brought me to a point I only once upon a time admired in other women, and quite honestly never believed I could be! My passion is to help people get: - out of the "diet" lose/regain cycle once and for all! - people moving...safely and at an appropriate level! - "uncovering" and "unlearning" the limitations that keep them stuck! Interestingly, the consumption of high fructose corn syrup led to decreased brain dopamine release upon stimulation, as well as decreased rate of release – so, not only is total dopamine release dampened, but so is the release from the brain cells. What implications this could have are speculative, but the paper briefly mentions that dopamine is involved in reward sensation and could be a factor in binge eating behavior. Caffeine: There is totally too much of a good thing. Try reducing consumption to 200mg or less & see if there’s a change in how we feel.⁣⁣

I first posted this protein vs regular snickers comparison on 18/2/2018. Since then, snickers protein bars have sky rocketed to the top of the ‘protein confectionary’ coefficient. Given original snickers bars are universally adored, this is somewhat unsurprising. -

The basis for this rise to the top is undoubtedly due to the notion that one can enjoy a ‘snickers-esque’ bar and be ‘healthier’ in the process.

Whilst both bars can be enjoyed, instead of attributing a ‘good or bad’ label to either, an objective analysis of both bars is a better idea.

If the goal is fat loss; it’s a fundamental equation of calories in vs calories out. Here we have 200 cal vs 245 cal. There is a difference, but it’s not overly significant. It is worth pointing out that the higher ratio of protein in the protein version may satiate an individual for longer, thus indirectly supporting a fat loss goal. Then again, maybe it won’t. -

If the goal is to consume more protein; it’s simply a case of accumulating the required protein to reach the target. In isolation, 18g vs 4.5g proposes a vast difference in favour of the protein snickers.

The use of protein as a healthy marketing buzzword is becoming oversubscribed and irresponsible within the industry. Protein consumption is one small part of any fitness goal. On its own it’s doesn’t count for anything unless the other pieces fit in to the same effort. -

Whilst higher protein versions of food may be very useful to some, for others, they may understand that they can still enjoy a regular snickers bar in moderation whilst achieving their goal. The key is to be objective and rational 🔥

No-bake chia yoghurt cake is the new obsession in our house 😉🍰🍰 This morning we almost argued on who was going to eat the last slice for breakfast 😄 It's basically like chia pudding with granola, but served in a more fancy way 😉 What do you think, do you like this idea?
I'll leave the recipe below!

No-bake chia yoghurt cake
For the crust:
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup almonds
1/2 cup pecans
1/4 tsp of sea salt
2 medjool dates
1 tbsp liquid coconut oil
1 tbsp cold water, if needed
In a food processor, blitz oats, almonds and pecans until broken into very small pieces. Add salt and medjool dates and continue processing. Slowly pour coconut oil and see if the dough becomes sticky. If not, pour a tablespoon of cold water, while processing continuously. Press the dough into a cake tin (a small one, ~15cm) and refrigerate.
Chia yoghurt layer
3 tbsp chia seeds
3 tbsp maple syrup
1/2 cup + 1/2 cup oat milk
1 tsp agar agar 
150g of natural (coconut) yoghurt
1 tsp vanilla extract
In a bowl, mix chia seeds with 1/2 cup of oat milk and maple syrup and let soak for 15 minutes. In a small pan, bring the second 1/2 cup of oat milk to a simmer, add agar agar and cook gently for 1 minute, stirring all the time. Remove from heat and let cool. Add yoghurt and vanilla to the bowl with chia seeds, mix to combine. Now add agar agar mixture to the same bowl and mix well. Transfer the filling to the cake tin, on top of the chilled crust. #Repost @oatmeal_stories with @get_repost ・・・ No-bake chia yoghurt cake is the new obsession in our house 😉🍰🍰 This morning we almost argued on who was going to eat the last slice for breakfast 😄 It's basically like chia pudding with granola, but served in a more fancy way 😉 What do you think, do you like this idea? I'll leave the recipe below! . No-bake chia yoghurt cake For the crust: 1/2 cup rolled oats 1/2 cup almonds 1/2 cup pecans 1/4 tsp of sea salt 2 medjool dates 1 tbsp liquid coconut oil 1 tbsp cold water, if needed In a food processor, blitz oats, almonds and pecans until broken into very small pieces. Add salt and medjool dates and continue processing. Slowly pour coconut oil and see if the dough becomes sticky. If not, pour a tablespoon of cold water, while processing continuously. Press the dough into a cake tin (a small one, ~15cm) and refrigerate. Chia yoghurt layer 3 tbsp chia seeds 3 tbsp maple syrup 1/2 cup + 1/2 cup oat milk 1 tsp agar agar 150g of natural (coconut) yoghurt 1 tsp vanilla extract In a bowl, mix chia seeds with 1/2 cup of oat milk and maple syrup and let soak for 15 minutes. In a small pan, bring the second 1/2 cup of oat milk to a simmer, add agar agar and cook gently for 1 minute, stirring all the time. Remove from heat and let cool. Add yoghurt and vanilla to the bowl with chia seeds, mix to combine. Now add agar agar mixture to the same bowl and mix well. Transfer the filling to the cake tin, on top of the chilled crust. Refrigerate for 3-4 hours or overnight. I love this saying. It simplifies all the advice that health experts all over the internet are giving. So what are the takeaways? 
1. Food gives is a vehicle for getting nutrients. We must eat. It is unhealthy not to eat.
2. Simply eating food isn’t enough. We must eat in the right amounts to reach our goals. To find out how much food you should be eating, google “ IIFYM calculator” to set a baseline.
3. Focus on nutrient dense, minimally processed foods. Shop the perimeter of the store for “real foods”. Don’t buy foods that have ingredients you can even pronounce. Stick to plants and lean meats.

Knowing how to diet can be frustrating. There is so much information out there! Keto? Intermittent fasting? Paleo?

Different diets work for different people - find what works for you.

If weight loss is your goal, knowing when to stop dieting can also be a struggle.

What? You thought you were just going to diet in perpetuity?

Nah, sister. Don’t do it. While there are certainly factors each individual must consider - including how much weight you have to lose - you need to consider taking a diet break after about 12 weeks. This especially holds true if you are trying to lose somewhere between 10-30 pounds. If you have more weight to lose, you could probably very well diet for longer and be fine.

Other signs you might need to take a diet break include very low energy levels as well as your workout performance suffering.

I also wouldn’t recommend trying to diet and gain muscle concurrently - as this is a virtually impossible combination. Like trying to ride 2 🐴 with one 🍑. Pick one thing to focus on, and go after it.

If you are going through a period of high stress in your life - whether it be a divorce, losing a job, financial troubles, etc. - I wouldn’t pile more stress on top of that by dieting concurrently. Remember - dieting is a stress to the body.

And, let’s get serious - do you really want to diet during the holidays? Sure, you can do it if it’s not a big deal for you to do so, but otherwise I’m a bigger fan of enjoying friends, family & food and going into maintenance mode.

No, I”m not recommending you binge for a month. You still need to be mindful. But the holidays can be a great time to build some muscle with a little extra caloric intake.

What totally and utterly silly things to do.

So then…

WHY in the floof would you let shitty things happening around you turn into treating yourself like shit too?

Why would you purposefully make a shitty situation worse? ⠀
Here’s the crazy part…

You’ll let bad things that happen outside of our control negatively impact the things you can control.
⠀
Someone cuts you off in traffic, and you’ll stop at the petrol station and buy a chocolate bar. ⠀
(Because chocolate is the solution! 😉)
⠀
You’ll get home from work, get into a fight with your kids or spouse, have a quick fix snack, and skip your workout…
⠀
Listen. I’m not saying bad things don’t happen.
⠀
In fact, life's going to be chockfull of bad, shitty, and negative things, a lot of which are outside of your control.
⠀
But when bad things are happening, the absolute best thing you can do is double down on what YOU can control.
⠀
You can’t always control a negative situation at work…
⠀
But you CAN choose to still get your workout in once you clock out.
⠀
You can’t always control upsetting stuff happening at home...
⠀
But you CAN choose to stick with your nutrition plan and give your body the fuel it needs to thrive.

The Bottom Line:

Shitty things happen.

Sometimes outside of your control.

But when the going gets tough...

Focus on what you CAN control.

Cling to it.

Did you know cortisol can stay elevated for up to 72 HOURS post workout? 😱

Intense training places a lot of stress on the body and cortisol is the bodies “fight or flight” response. But, when it is elevated for too long, it can result in decreased muscle mass and high levels of blood glucose

So, how do you shut down cortisol post workout? 🤔

By an insulin spike! While spiking insulin THROUGHOUT the day inhibits the bodies ability to burn fat, so does losing muscle. Therefore, an insulin spike post-workout is extremely important!

Not only is an insulin spike going to increase muscle protein synthesis by shuttling amino acids to the muscle for recovery, but it is also going to shut down cortisol levels by decreasing blood glucose levels

A monosaccharide carbohydrate source is going to be the best bet post workout because it is the fastest type of carbohydrate that can be digested, which will shut down cortisol quickly. That’s why I use Ignition, a monosaccharide,  along with my Phormula-1 protein, post workout!
