nutritioncoach PERFECT SCRAMBLED EGGS 🥚. I've had a lot of questions recently regarding how I cook scrambled eggs, so here's the method that works best for me. I cook mine on the hob as the microwave can be a bit hit & miss and mine are never rubbery as a result 👍.

Method:
🥚 Heat a non-stick frying pan with a little oil spray/butter/frylight and crack in your eggs. I don't bother whisking the eggs before as they'll get mixed up in the pan (and therefore less washing up), but you can do if you'd prefer.
🥚 Add a pinch of salt, then slowly stir the eggs over a low heat. I find using a silicone spatula works well for this as you can fold the eggs over and also scrape any residue from the sides of the pan.
🥚 Remove from the eggs from the heat just before they are ready. This is because they will carry on cooking from the residual heat of the pan, so by the time you serve up they'll be perfect 😍.
🥚 For creamy scrambled eggs, stir in a spoonful of cream/crème fraîche or, for a healthier twist, use Greek yogurt instead.

I graduated with a Master of Science 📜📚degree in Clinical Dietetics & Nutrition-in a coordinated program where I also completed my internship. I was clear on what I did and didn’t like in the field but also unclear on how to reach my big goals 💭. Looking back now, there are things I wish I had known...

1️⃣ You don’t have to go the safe route. 
I chose an out of the box route for an RD at that time (corporate wellness technology) and dove head first. I actually worked at a large, prestigious hospital 🏨 throughout school and was urged to ‘get a role there’ since they knew me. But I knew it wasn’t for me. I chose the more ‘unknown route’ and am glad I did-it led to me excelling quickly in my role, being promoted to run an on-site program that I rolled out nation-wide and learned the ropes of product creation, sales and account management that I could then apply to my own business that I opened a few years later. 
2️⃣ Messy is better than perfect.
Just start. Stop holding yourself back. Stop waiting for the perfect moment or solution. Show up even when no one is cheering. Stop expecting things to land in your lap. Hire a mentor if you’re confused but put in the work. When I first started I worked NON-STOP. No it wasn’t healthy but I knew it’s what I wanted. 
3️⃣ Business, sales and marketing are things you may not have learned but will want to.
They are key to understand no matter what you do, honestly. And are things I am glad I learned through my career and continuing to learn now. Read books (I want to do a post on my faves), listen to podcasts, pick someone’s brain on how to generate sales/market, invest in yourself by hiring a mentor/coach if you’re not actively learning in your role. As an RD, you don’t learn this in school but is super valuable.

The argument goes like this: liquid food is less satiating than solid food, meaning that it takes more of it to make you feel full. Since most people will eat until they feel full, the best foods for weight loss are the foods that make you feel full on the fewest calories. So by that logic, liquid calories would be out.

There’s some truth to this: calories do matter for weight loss. Before you close the tab in disgust, that still doesn’t mean calorie-counting is a good strategy. For most people, direct calorie-counting is actually terrible strategy, partly because there are an enormous number of factors in calorie balance besides food and exercise. But the fact remains that calorie balance still does ultimately determine weight loss.

Since calories matter, but calorie-counting rarely works in the long term, strategies that automatically reduce calories without conscious effort are pretty much the holy grail.

What most studies show is that the benefits or drawbacks of liquid calories have more to do with how people eat them and less to do with anything inherent to consuming energy in liquid form. Liquid calories can slow weight loss if… - You don’t expect to feel full from them.
- They’re mostly giving you calories from carbs/sugar.
- They don’t contain any nutrients.

These are the real problems with satiety, not necessarily the liquid format. In fact, if none of the above apply, strategic use of liquid calories can actually be helpful to weight loss.

How I feel about heading to our friends’ wedding this weekend and eating all the food, especially wedding cake (legit my fav thing about weddings haha!!). Life is too damn short to not eat cake. Sure chicken and broccoli is good for the body, but did you know that cake is good for the soul? If you’re going to cut the fruit to serve in a bowl anyway, it doesn’t take much longer to put it on skewers. The key in my opinion is to cut the melon into bite size pieces so the it is easy to eat straight off the skewers.

To make Fruit Kebabs:

Cut assorted melons into bite size pieces, as close to the same size as possible.
.
Place the cut pieces on skewers following a pattern and book end the skewers with berries.
.
We used Cantaloupe, Watermelon, Honeydew, pineapple, strawberries, blueberries and grapes.

I spoke about my inability to stop at one or two of these freeze dried chocolate covered strawberries, no matter how mindfully I tried to consume them....what can I say 🤷🏻‍♀️ I like larger portions and I’m human!

nutritioncoach If you want to build lean muscle mass, what you eat is paramount to your results. Ideally, the best foods are those that are both nutrient and caloire-dense as we need to intake enough calories, preferably in a slight surplus of calories, to support protein synthesis.
The fastest way to achieve you results is to make these two things compatible to your goal. That is the one and only way. With work, order, and discipline everything is possible.

🔸 When beta carotene is converted to vitamine A it becomes and anti-oxidant. This means that it can prevent and restore cell damage. Therfore it plays an important role in skin, tissue and eye health.
🔸 Its often used as a natural food colorant under code E160a and is added to 'sunless' tanning products.
🔸Beta catotene absorbtion can be improved when eaten together with fats and oils.
🔸 Caratenoid reduces the effect of  cholesterol lowering drugs and research shows that large caratenoid intake also increase chances of cancer among smokers. Therfore it is strongly discouraged to take caratenoid supplement pills without prior medical consultation.
🔸 You cannot get a beta-carotene overdose (in contrary to Vitamin A which can be toxic if taken in excessive amounts). Because if your body has enough vitamin A, it simply stops absorbing and converting beta-carotene into vitamin A. Never the less we see it still interacts with smoke chemicals, making them even more harmful. Therfore the above supplementation restriction

Suite au post de Julie sur le groupe de soutien fb "Se motiver ensemble pour plus de légèreté" je me suis mise à chercher ma 2ème transfo(photo 2 et 3) avant après avant que l'on me découvre mes pathos mais surtout avant d'en souffrir et que cela impacte ma vie (La 1ère transfo m'a en quelque sorte bouziller ma relation avec la nourriture pdt longtemps !! Lift weights: Lifting weights with high volumes & high intensity has shown to not only acutely squirt test all over your body but also cause a sustained increase in resting lvls over time.

Sleep: Men who sleep less than 4hrs/day have ~60% less total testosterone and 55% less bioavailable testosterone than men who slept >8hrs. This is also backed up by other studies so get your zzz.

Dietary fat: Reducing fat from 40% to 20% of kcals has shown a significant reduction in test suggesting a higher fat diet be optimal for maximising test levels BUT even if not following a high fat diet, by ensuring you get adequate SATURATED fat, you can still keep levels high.

Sexy time: Watching sexually arousing films (porn), or just being sexually aroused, can increase test secretion with watching of only 4mins of it also shown to increase squat performance lol.

Supplement smart: A deficiency in Zinc, Magnesium and Vitamin D are all commonly associated with low test levels however, after supplementation, all 3 have then shown to increase circulating test concentrations back to normal levels (if not higher).

Practical implications? Do all of the above. But in all seriousness, though the above will aid in increasing test, whether that then contributes to any extra muscle gain is really of debate however, at least you are giving yourself the best chance possible.

If you like apple pie, you’ll love this oatmeal. It’s super easy and cooks in 10 minutes. See the details below:⠀

Ingredients: 1 apple cored & roughly chopped, 1/2 c apple cider, 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon, pinch of salt, 1/2 c quick steel cut oats, 3/4 c unsweetened vanilla almond milk, 2 tsp brown sugar, chopped walnuts ⠀

Directions: In a medium pot, bring first 5 ingredients to a boil. Turn the heat down to medium and cook for 5 minutes, stirring often. Add the oats, almond milk and brown sugar bringing the pot back to a boil. Cover the pot and simmer for 5-7 minutes. Serve with chopped walnuts on top.⠀

Less choices, saves time, $$, and calories for the most part. 
Instead of  wasting time everday thinking what should I have for lunch? Decide once and save that mental energy and time thinking about what to eat for special occasions. 
Many of us dont need a creative lunch. We just need a lunch that supports our health goals and gets us through the workday.

After a while healthy lunches will be on autopilot just like brushing your teeth. 
Pick it and as long as it's working for you stick with it for a few weeks for easy success.

I’ve definitely been more lax this summer and then well, summers over and here I am still being a bit more overboard than balanced. 😝 But I’m not panicking or freaking out or jumping on any diet train... I’m just simply holding myself more accountable and going to fuel my body with what I know it responds to better. Increase protein, increase water intake, increase fruits and veggies and decrease the extra “treat yourself” days/meals that I know aren’t making me feel great.

Everyone has those time periods where you tell yourself you’re being healthy but you know you’re really not. I’m all for balance and moderation, but sometimes it goes a little past moderation and you just need to dial it back in a little bit. So that’s what I’m focusing on now for the rest of the year. Do you ever feel like you need a little extra help staying motivated to fuel your body in a healthy way? With the holidays coming up, I really want to get into a better routine that way I have a foundation set and can still enjoy holidays foods without feeling guilty because I’ll know I’ve been better on track most days.

nutritioncoach Gluten free sugar free (and dairy/nut free) granola clusters! Yep that’s right - no sugar/sweetener binder in this one! Bars and even granola are notorious for having some type of sweetener to hold it together and get a crunch. I wanted a cluster without sugar (but not without flavour) and without nuts (#schoolsafe) that my daughter could easily eat as an on the go snack and at her school. She loves crunchy food, and I love recipe challenges! .

I took both my allergen free granola recipe (“crazy granola”) and original granola recipe (“fall for granola”) and sort of combined them together with a few batch tests and tweaks and voila! Granola clusters that held together, crunched (but you can cook them less for a chewier texture) still had a hint of sweet from the raisins and bursting with cinnamon! .

Modifications - you can do this without raisins if you want a completely unsweetened version. You can also do 1 less egg white (2 egg whites total instead of 3) if you want even more crunch, but a slightly crumbly/drier almost muesli like texture). .

Don't worry you won't won’t be able to do so, but just the fact that you’re trying to, will allow your scapulas to be pulled back and down together, while creating an upper back arch fully pushing your chest out. This will also create upper back & trap tension, while also engaing your lats.⁣ ⁣ Same thing goes for your lower body: you want to open up your hips & squeeze your glutes to really get all the benefits from the set up. ⁣ ⁣ ❌❌❌On the flip side, not doing what’s mentioned above simply won’t generate as much force, and will result in giving you a what I call: an "Inactive set up” which will be weaker unstable, and can actually lead to injury since your shoulders will stay in a more vulnerable position. ⁣ ⁣ Try this out and tell me what you think about it. Striving for a healthy pattern of eating is generally a good goal – unless it is taken to extreme. About two decades ago, the term orthorexia” was coined. It had been noted that some individuals were becoming more obsessive in their attempt towards healthier eating. This then resulted in an exaggerated preoccupation with only allowing themselves to eat what they deemed as healthy foods and a progression towards excessive food limitations.

Although orthorexia is not officially categorized as an eating disorder, based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual that defines specific eating disorders, the negative impacts can be similar. If we lose much more than that, there’s a high chance it’s water weight (or worse, that some muscle’s been lost too ☹️).

That’s why seeing those daily fluctuations isn’t always the most accurate indication of weight loss.

Instead, we suggest focusing on scale TRENDS over time. Here’s how:

1️⃣Weigh yourself first thing in the morning.
2️⃣Record the number and move on from it (remember, we don’t care about a single day’s weight).
3️⃣Using the “average” equation function built into Excel or another type of spreadsheet, generate the average.
*️⃣Make sure to collect at least three weigh-ins from the week, hopefully under the same conditions each time (same time of day, same scale, etc.). 4️⃣Once you’ve calculated the average weight, use it to compare one week to the next.

When you use the average, it will “flatten out” those daily fluctuations that inevitably occur due to a long list of reasons (hormone changes, you ate something high in salt last night, you didn’t sleep well, etc.).

I love Poke Bowls!  We usually get them at our local Asian restaurant that tops it with fresh salmon and so many other delicious ingredients.  Last night, I decided to attempt making one at home.  I had a variety of ingredients I could use including some smoked salmon and crab sticks. It was actually fairly easy.  Here's the simple process to making your own Poke Bowl at home...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Start with a base of (cooled) cooked rice.  You can use whatever rice you want. I used sushi rice since I wanted that traditional sticky rice for my base.  A healthier option would be brown rice.  First I rinsed the sushi rice well. Then I added 1 1/2 cups of water to 1 cup of sushi rice to my pot.  I brought the water to a boil, then reduced to simmer and covered. Total cooking time was about 15 minutes.  Let rice cool down before assembling your Poke Bowl.

The fun part of a Poke Bowl is you can top your rice with whatever you want!  Choose a combination of lean protein (fish), fresh chopped vegetables, a legume like shelled edamame or lima beans), a healthy fat (avocado is my go to), fresh cut fruit for added sweetness (mango or pineapple). If you like some spice then slice up some hot peppers like jalapenos!

Ingredient toppings I used:
- 2 oz smoked salmon
- 1/3 cup imitation crab meat (sticks), diced
- 1/4 cup cucumbers, diced
- 1/4 cup lima beans (cooked and chilled)
- 1/4 cup avocado, diced (1/2 of one small avocado)
- 1/4 cup mango, diced
- 1/8 to 1/4 cup of pickled red onions (Easy to make... slice up red onion and let soak in apple cider or red vinegar for at least 1 hour. Tastes great in salads too!)
- Jalapeno, sliced as a garnish (optional)
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
After assembled, drizzle with spicy Sriracha Mayo Sauce or another favorite Asian sauce.

For the Sriracha Mayo sauce, I combined 2 tsp of Sriracha with some olive oil based mayo until I had my preferred level of spiciness.  If you don't like it too spicy then up the mayo versus Sriracha.

nutritioncoach “Should I train if I feel a bit unwell?” A really common question, especially at this time of year.. Answer: In short, it largely depends on you, and how you genuinely feel.

I’m not going to say “yes, at low intensity” or assume “it’ll make you feel better” because I have no genuine insight into how you feel.

What I will say on a general basis is;

1) CHESTY COUGH = Rest & Recover 😔 
2) TIRED/LOW MOOD/STRESS- Some exercise may well help to lift your mood, try a brisk outdoor walk... Even just 10-20 minutes. This works for me!

3) INJURED - Use your common sense & listen to the rehab advice.... and follow it! It’s too easy to be tempted to rush back too soon, skipping through the slower rehab stages - they are there for a reason

4) COLDS - See how you feel! You might have you have some energy in the tank, but consider backing off to allow your body to recover. If you persist on hammering your training, you could find your cold lingering for longer.

🌵I’ve moved farther and farther away from any caffeine and any non-local products but I still have coffee or matcha every once in awhile and when I do I stack it with l-theanine just like my buddy @vonrothfelder and his awesome @strongcoffeecompany product because it’s a stack I’d recommend if you’re going to stress yourself with coffee or tea, particularly for those who are sensitive to caffeine

🥤The graph shows that there is an almost perfectly linear correlation between the consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) and total mortality (incl risk of type 2 diabetes,  cancer and cardiovascular disease [CVD])
.
🍬Replacing SSBs with artificially-sweetened beverages (ASB) lowers the risk of total mortality significantly. However, consuming more than 2 portions a day starts contributing negatively to overall health, increasing cardio metabolic risk. Reasons for this are not 100% understood, but theories include:
1️⃣ their intense sweetness (artificial sweeteners are A LOT sweeter than regular sugar) leads to the development of a preference for sweetness
2️⃣they negatively impact the gut microbiome in a way that can affect insulin resistance
3️⃣the sweetness can trigger a cephalic (brain-directed) insulin response
.
🍵Both tea and coffee have an inverse relationship to total mortality to a certain extent, with the one for coffee being more pronounced
.
☕️What coffee type is best? Filtered coffee has been found to be most healthful as it filters out unhealthy compounds in coffee

🖤What about decaf? Interestingly, decaf coffee has been shown to have the same benefits in terms of diabetes and CVD as caffeine-containing coffee, but not in terms of neurodegenerative disease

📌Conclusions:
☝🏼SSBs aren’t the best for overall health. Limiting intake as much as possible is advisable
✌🏼If you love sodas, replace SSBs with ASBs (sweeteners are very well regulated and safe for consumption). But limiting to max 1 per day is recommended
🤟🏼Coffee and tea are absolutely fine and even healthful IN MODERATION. 🖖🏼If you don’t consume either, this is in no way a nudge for you to start. Würde man meinen. Jedoch verwechseln wir oft Beobachtungen mit sicheren Fakten. Nehmen wir die Ernährung als Beispiel (was denn sonst). Wieso gibt es so viele Fragezeichen, wieso sagt der eine Fleisch wäre gut für uns und der andere es wäre schlecht für uns, wieso sagt der eine, dass Milch für uns gut ist und der andere meint, sie wäre der Teufel?

Aufgrund von Momentaufnahmen. Diese Verwirrungen kommen in der Ernährung oftmals dadurch, dass es sich in den meisten Fällen um Beobachtungsstudien handelt. Das bedeutet, dass die Teilnehmer von den Wissenschaftlern 👩‍🔬 beobachtet werden, sowie ich die Menschen da draußen beobachte. Durch Fragebögen erfährt man über ihr Essverhalten und Gewohnheiten.

Das Problem? Menschen vergessen, Menschen lügen bewusst oder unbewusst -  vielleicht um besser da zu stehen, vielleicht aus Vergesslichkeit oder selektiver Wahrnehmung. Also bereits hier entsteht ein großer Zwiespalt zwischen Realität und Wahrnehmung.

Allerdings ist dies ein günstiger Weg Studien durchzuführen. Das bringt mit sich viele Ungenauigkeiten und viele Störfaktoren (wie z.B. Lifestyle, Bewegung, Alter, sozialer Hintergrund usw) werden nicht betrachtet. 
Dazu kommt, dass um wirklich die Wirkungen gewisser Lebensmitteln oder Ernährungs- oder Verhaltensweisen auf die langfristige Gesundheit zu erkennen, man diese Studien über Jahrzehnte gestalten müsste. Das wäre sehr kostenintensiv und dadurch machen es auch sehr wenige.

Die Lösung? Akzeptieren, dass in der Ernährungswelt es wenig Schwarz oder Weiß gibt, dass nur weil n=1 (meine Science Nerds werden es verstehen), heißt es nicht, dass etwas im echten Leben anwendbar ist. Was sicher ist ist die Unsicherheit. Es gibt nicht den einen wahren Weg, die eine wahre Ernährungsweise. Das ist das Einzige sichere.
