🔸️ Before pursuing a degree as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist I was thisss close to going to culinary school. I always knew I wanted to work in a field that included food. Fate had its way though and culinary didn’t work out, which I am now grateful for! I love food, but the work I do now, helping women heal their relationship with food and their body and achieve a truly healthy and happy life,  is so fulfilling. I truly feel it's what I am meant to do🙏🏻. ⁠

nourishnotpunish Who is super stuffed from the thanksgiving weekend? 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’m here to give you a friendly reminder that being super full from indulging is ok. It’s part of life. Celebrating, having fun, letting loose and living without boundaries from time to time is normal. Restricting yourself 365 days a year is not.

You might be sitting on the couch watching football thinking... “ew I feel so gross! I’m going to workout A LOT THIS WEEK and eat super low calorie/carb.” Don’t do that to yourself!!! I feel gross too, don’t get me wrong but I ended that punishment mentality years ago and it’s the best thing I ever did for myself.

Take a deep breath. Remind yourself it’s the freaking holidays. Remind yourself you’re a human and we like to indulge sometimes. Remind yourself you’re beautiful, even if your cheeks are a little swollen and your pants are feeling super tight. 
#
It’s also okay to want to be healthy this week. It doesn’t make you the devil to want to eat clean. I do it bc it makes me feel good, inside and out. So this week, I’m going to choose to nourish my body with clean, healthy foods that make me feel full and good. I will not choose to punish myself and deprive myself. 
#
Here is a great option and one of my favorite meals to enjoy on weeknights regardless of how full I feel. This Salmon Burger Kale Caesar salad is packed with healthy fats that keep me full and feeling great. And, most importantly, it tastes phenomenal— bc food should taste good 😎

Nutrition is important AND it's not everything, especially when it's rooted in weight loss disguised as health.⠀ .⠀ Diet culture sneakiness often takes on the name of a "healthy lifestyle" aimed at reducing inflammation in the body. This is odd for two reasons:⠀ .⠀ 1. Most of the inflammation in our bodies comes from stress/trauma and our inability to self-regulate which throws off our immune responses...and yet...these "lifestyles" often focus solely on food and restriction.⠀ .⠀ 2. While their selling point is to get "healthy," weight loss is also praised and revered (as if that's the most impressive thing we can do). According to research from Linda Bacon's book, Body Respect, weight cycling-repeated loss and regain (this happens to 95% of those who diet) increases inflammation in the body as does calorie-restriction dieting.⠀ .⠀ Yes, nutrition is important and yet the way that we go about it is SO much more important than the food that we eat (with the exception of allergies, intolerances, coeliac disease etc.). ⠀ .⠀ If our way of eating is rooted in fear, calorie restriction, weight obsession or stress-NO amount of anti-inflammatory foods will heal our bodies.⠀ .⠀ From personal experience, my obsession with eating "clean" did so much more harm to my body than any of the cupcakes I wouldn't allow myself to eat.⠀ .⠀ NOTE: This post is not meant to negate the importance of nutrition. A vlog of things we did in November and what happened. -

So so unexplainably hard saying goodbye to little Leonardo. Watching him so ill for so long was incredibly heartbreaking, he is such a beautiful and strong boy. Sorry I haven't uploaded for a while, I have still been recording I just didn't know if people liked the vlogs and I literally miss Leonardo so much. Trying to look at all the good things in life when something bad happens.

Also some very good times, and more amazing food (obviously). Walks on the beach, recovery wins, new discoveries and fun with the best people.

I AM SO EXCITED FOR CHRISTMAS!!!

nourishnotpunish I meant to share this last week, but completely forgot. Anyway, I’m still digging the couscous vibe, as I can’t get over how quick it is to cook (and how tasty it is..)! 🤩 As most of you have probably gathered, I’m neither vegan nor vegetarian, as I try not to follow any labels. Instead I’m consciously trying to eat less meat/fish and to eat more seasonally. However, I do still eat meat/fish from time to time, especially when it’s what my body is craving (and I generally aim to eat fish twice a week). Salmon is definitely one of my favourite oily fishes, as it’s such a great source of Omega-3 fatty acids, but as it’s on the pricier side, it’s not a regular in my weekly shop. Last week, I cooked my favourite pan fried garlic and tamari salmon (simply sautéed in a dash of olive oil, a clove of garlic, tamari sauce + black pepper) which I served alongside some wholegrain couscous, sautéed spinach, cherry tomatoes, and sauerkraut. Given how much I loved it, I think I’ll be cooking the same dish again next week!

nourishnotpunish I have avoided bread for so long, firstly because of my WLS I couldn't really eat it because it's so filling and I had to make sure I was getting nutrients from other forms of food without filling my vsg stomach. ⁠⠀

On Friday I hit 8 weeks post op and I finally decided to try out some bread thins, this whole meal went down like a treat and now I'm living on bread thins. ⁠⠀
I haven't had vegetables with EVERY single meal the last couple of days because ⁠⠀
1. I realised that wasn't realistic, who wants to eat JUST vegetables 4-6 times a day?⁠⠀
2. I really just haven't feel like them, I eat some leafy greens or capsicum probably 1-2 times a day but I genuinely have just had enough of eating vegetables for breakfast lunch and dinner for now. ⁠⠀
3. Finally having the courage to expand to other food groups and types of food outside of my vegetables which I found

nourishnotpunish Chia pudding with mango, ginger and cinnamon. Perfect for breakfast or dessert😋

Recipe:
🥭1 cup of almond milk
🥭1/4 cup of chia seed
🥭pinch of salt
🥭1 mango
🥭1tsp grated ginger
🥭cinnamon to dust on top.
1.Whisk almond milk, chia and salt until mixture thickens. 
2.Dice mango and grate ginger on top and mix through.
3.Add a layer of chia in small bowl and top with mango and a dusting of cinnamon.

Chia pudding with mango, ginger and cinnamon. nourishnotpunish This past week has tested that smile more times than I can count. That smile definitely faded some days but I continued to push everyday to get it back.

Recovery isn’t a linear process. Recovery is something I work on everyday. Some days are hard and I just want to give up but most of the time now they are really good and give me some of the best memories.

So today I celebrate the little things. I celebrate the love I have for my job and coworkers. I celebrate the love I have for my amazing and supportive friends and family. I celebrate getting answers to my health issues and work towards being the healthiest I can be. And I celebrate the love I have for the community that surrounds recovery.

Without this community I don’t think I would be as far as I am in life right now. I am so grateful and lucky to have connected with so many people over the years, for the opportunities I have been given, for the stories I’ve heard because people got happy, and so much more.

So tonight I will be thankful. I will take time for myself and my health and appreciate all that I have been given because of recovery.

So I’ll take it minute by minute, hour by hour, and day by day. Sending all my love out to everyone and hope you get through whatever you may be struggling with. Keep going, you’ve got this ✨

This past week has tested that smile more times than I can count. That smile definitely faded some days but I continued to push everyday to get it back. Recovery isn’t a linear process. So today I made a batch of “Chocolate-Dipped Vanilla Bean Macaroons” and it’s recipe 68 from the @ohsheglows cookbook set.

Because I don’t bake very often, I had to get most of the ingredients - nothing in my pantry! 🤷🏼‍♀️ But once all the ingredients were prepared and measured out, these were super easy to make. The only think I can’t get the hang of is the effortless-looking chocolate drizzle. Wtf is with that? It looks so easy but mine always comes out looking like ugly blobs.

nourishnotpunish I didn’t pole much over the summer as I gained weight in recovery from a lifetime of dieting. Weight gain is tough. It just is.

It is incredibly easier for someone who maintains thin privilege after weight gain, which I do. I am not discriminated against. I don’t have a life of micro and macro aggressions to contend with. Nobody is going to comment on this post telling me they hope I’m still healthy. I just buy bigger sized clothes, which are still available to me, and I battle the daily internalized weight stigma thought that what I’m doing - gaining weight - is wrong.

It is tough. Some of us have developed eating disorders, body dysmorphia, or compulsive compensatory behaviors to fight our internalized weight stigma. In a society that perpetuates weight stigma, it is something we all have to *actively* unlearn. It will not be handed to us. We have to unlearn, and then we can teach others.
.
I resisted getting back on my pole as my body was growing. Thoughts I’d learned in the fitness industry, about how smaller bodies are faster and easier to lift, would shoot through my head when I considered it. I was alone, at home, next to my pole, with a fatphobic culture’s messaging keeping me from doing what I love.
.
When I record now, I pole with more clothes on, partly because I don’t want to obsess about my body, and partly because I got sick of men commenting on it. It’s allowed me to feel safer in this space that I created for myself initially to allow myself to feel safe.
.
We have to fight this messaging both alone, at home, in our minds, and out in the world with others.
.
Weight gain is tough. Weight stigma is tougher. Our commitment to ending it must be the toughest of all.

Festive Carrot Cake Oats 👇
40g @gfoats 
200ml egg-whites 
1 1/2 cups water
4 baby carrots (grated)
2tbs @natvialiving chocolate syrup 
2tsp cacao powder 
1tsp ground cinnamon 
1tsp ground ginger 
Pinch ground nutmeg 
Pinch ground cloves
Pinch salt .
.
On stovetop bring water & salt to boil
Add oats & carrot - reduce to a simmer (keep stirring to prevent sticking)
Add spices & chocolate syrup - keep stirring 
Once the mixture thickens & water is absorbed slowly (using a whisk to stir) gradually add egg-whites. 
Continue to whisk mixture slowly for at least 1 minute (prevents white flecks of egg from forming)
(I continue stirring with a wooden spoon for another 1-2 minutes)
Remove from heat & allow oat mixture to 'sit' it will thicken up nicely .

Topped with 1tsp white chia seeds + fresh pomegranate jewels + kiwifruit stars + a little sf maple syrup 👌

nourishnotpunish OH MY ONIONS! 💥 Thank goodness they’re #nutritious because I LOVE and always have loved them since I was a little girl 👧🏽😍 Now where is the onion emoji?! 🤔 My favorites are raw green and red onions 🙌🏽 I literally eat them like chips as I chop them, and garnish them over practically everything (no meal is ever complete without fresh onion crunch) 🙈 And I’m that crazy lady that’ll ask for extra onions at the restaurant 😆 #shameless #onionbreath 😂 Anyways, I attribute my body’s great resistance to illness to my onion addiction 😋 How do you enjoy your #onions - green, yellow, red, or white; raw, grilled, baked, or sautéed? 👩🏽‍🍳💕 #onionlover #onionhealthbenefits

Teenage years are hard my darling but they don't define the person you are or your life ahead.  Sometimes you feel you are alone and the world is against you, but you will come to learn that you are part of something bigger than you could even begin to imagine. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You will grow into the person you are meant to be if you surrender and are patient. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

You are wonder if you are good enough, you question why some people don't like you and are mean to you, you think it might be personal and that there is something wrong with you. The answer is NO, and whilst this may be your reality now and you have the power to make your life whatever you want to make it and you can become whoever you want to become. Do you feel apologetic about who you are?
Do you care too much about what other people think of you making you doubt your greatness?

I’ve felt all these things and have struggled with it quite a bit lately if I’m honest.  This week I finally said to my husband, “I’m tired of feeling like it’s not ok to just be me.” So, who am I?  I’m going to share 5 things that I’m proud of that make me, ME.  I’d love for you to do the same in the comments.

1.  I am sensitive and if people I’m close to are hurting, I feel it too.  I’ve been told many times I’m an empath.
2.  I can be dramatic and have BIG feelings sometimes.
3.  Even though change is hard, I appreciate it. It’s one of the reasons I love blogging, because it’s always changing and no two days look the same. It’s also why we have moved 6x in 14 years (and no, we aren’t a military family)
4.  I’m an entrepreneur.  I love being in charge of my schedule and my success. I don’t enjoy working for someone else and love the thrill of creating something.
5.  I over-share. Especially if I feel uncomfortable. I often offer way too much information because I hate uncomfortable silences in conversations and I walk away  thinking, “why the hell did I just tell them that?!🤦🏼‍♀️ Today, I want to encourage you to make peace with who you are.
Be YOU, unapologetically.
And I promise, I’ll do the same.

Can you relate? We go into this autopilot mode when things don’t go the way we pictured & just do our best to get through it. Sure that keeps us going but it doesn’t light us up, it doesn’t allow our passions to thrive & it certainly won’t break through the loneliness we feel just floating at sea. •
I probably sound like I’m mad to some but to the people that hear me; I see you & you can do scary things I promise 🐛🦋 so reminder; look back but don’t let the past hold you back. Be proud of how far you’ve come! I hope today & throughout the year piece by piece you find your way too. After all; we’re all just suns searching for a sky to shine in 🌤

Had this plate of fluffy vegan „Kaiserschmarrn“ for breakfast a few weeks ago and added some homemade vegan mousse au chocolat. I am such a chocolate lover... as you probably already know. 
Just came home from the gym and I‘m glad I went as I had stomach ages before. Will make a quick dinner, work on next weeks presentation and treat myself to a face mask. What about you? Are you going out tonight?

It’s biology!  A hungry body will always crave energy dense foods that provide a quick burst of energy.

Aka- A hungry body will always prefer candy (or high energy foods).
.
Know that if you restrict- it’ll eventually lead to eating more.
.
When you’re in a restricted state and you do eat candy- you’re more likely to eat a lot of it because your body needs fuel.
.
This will probably make you feel out of control, like you’ve “messed up” or done something wrong, but this is your body working to keep you alive.
.
This is also true even if you’re eating enough food- but have food rules, forbidden foods or a “bad” food list that creates deprivation.
.
So if you’re beating yourself up- wondering why you just did that again with food- know that biology is a powerful driver. It’s trying to keep you alive.
.
Know that restriction creates deprivation which leads reactive eating.
.
The solution? Eat! Seek satisfaction! Give yourself permission to have the foods you enjoy and be kind with yourself. You’re working on it!

I had a great conversation with a woman at the gym today about how we've chosen to let our hair color grow out and be natural. While this isn't a choice everyone makes, we both agreed that it's freed us to just be ourselves without continuing to "chase" something that was no longer ours. ⁣ ⁣ It's not easy to see our bodies changing, including our hair! Letting go of what used to be is a mourning process and takes time and often times, lots of processing.⁣ ⁣ Midlife often leads to extreme eating behaviors to stay or get "healthier". While adapting more health-promoting behaviors is great, extremes are not and often lead to disordered eating and sometimes a eating disorders. ⁣ ⁣ I no longer assume that a woman who has silver or gray hair is old. I now see this as a choice that many women are making at all ages in an attempt to just be themselves and accept what their bodies are presenting to them. ⁣ ⁣ Whatever our bodies are presenting, it's our personal choice whether we wish to honor and accept it or not. Neither way is right or wrong. It's about choice. ⁣ ⁣ I'd love to hear from you!⁣ ⁣ ♥️ What kinds of things signify aging to you?⁣ ♥️ What are you learning to embrace as you age?⁣ ♥️ How are you honoring your body as it changes with age?⁣ ⁣

Truth: yesterday I ate a lot! 3 good large meals, and plenty of snacks including sweet treats. I honoured my hunger cues. I also honoured my whole self, including my mental and emotional health. Listened to my body, and not in the way I often see prescribed so we can eat the least amount possible! 🤔 That's not kind.

Today is completely different. I'm not all that hungry. I'm craving veggies and wanting to drink a lot of apple squash (#realtalk I mostly prefer NAS squash over water 😊). I definitely want to make my food satisfying but I get the feeling my body feels more nourished, happier...

Bodies are wise. Bodies are good. Intelligent and trustworthy. All being well with our general foundational health, they will lead us towards balance, whether that's PH level, temperature or eating when we don't force them in any direction. 🙌

Alright friends. Facebook will not stop showing me this ad. And I have thoughts. The first few times, I let it go. But every freaking time I scroll my timeline these days, I come across it, and I finally took it as a sign to speak up. #DietCulture is all around us in ways that can be pretty obvious. But sometimes it’s sneaky too. one of my favorite lines of @chr1styharrison Is "diet culture is a shapeshifter”. I bring you the “body positive” shapewear ad. Sound like an oxymoron? That’s cause it is. But this company does a pretty clever job! The premise of the ad is this: Venus de Milo, goddess of love, discussing how shapewear *can* be body positive. Although “women should love their bodies” she says, it can be hard to do when our bodies are always changing. She goes on to tell us that for those days when her confidence needs a little boost, she chooses shapewear. Great marketing? Yes. Body positivity? Not so much. Here’s why: yes our bodies are always changing. Sure, it can be difficult to feel comfortable and confident in our bodies and in our clothes all the time. But guess what? ⁣ ⁣ 1.We don’t *have* to LOVE our bodies all the time.⁣ ⁣ 2.Much of why we feel this way in the first place is actually rooted in fatphobia and our society’s idea of how the female body *should* look.⁣ ⁣ Don’t believe me? Then let me ask you this: how many ads have you seen for MEN’s shapewear? Rolls, lumps, bumps, tummies, FUPAs...we can admit that these things are part of human body realness, yet we still have a hard time feeling good about ourselves or seeing our clothes as “flattering” unless we do something to cover them up. Shapewear CAN do that for us, and in our fatphobic society it WILL most likely make you feel better and safer to go out into the world if you’re sucked in and smoothed out. My point here is NOT to shame anyone who wants that, because it’s really flippin hard to live in this world and not want that. My point is to challenge you to think about why you want that? What messages have you gotten and experiences have you had that make you feel as though you can’t go out into the world without manipulating your physical appearance in some way? On Friday I had the privilege of helping the class bake some delicious Oatmeal Cookies - their previous guest chef had been @jamieoliver - so no pressure! 😂
Then today I got to meet the great man himself and was delighted when he bought himself a copy of the My Relationship with Food cookbook - he made my day! 
It just goes to show that you never know what each day is going to bring, but believing in good karma and positivity is what works for me! . 
I do hope that @jamieoliver (my 2nd favourite Jamie after @jittle59 ) enjoys making and eating some of my recipes as much as my Jamie does!

This week I’ve been fortunate enough to have has 2 👍 days helping out at my nephews’ school UCS. Today’s gonna be good, I can already tell! (I hope my intuition is right!!!). I’m going to visit my bestie @mealtalkwithwinnie in PHILLY!! I haven’t been there in over two years so I’m SUPER excited because I always have a blast whenever I go!! The only thing I need to challenge is my fear of sitting down for long periods of time (I need to take 3 trains to get there so this is a BIG challenge!). I know I’ll be okay though, and the more I do these exposures, the easier and less scary they will be! ✌️

I’m struggling this morning with feeling safe in my body but honestly what else is new?? At this point I just need to accept that I’m gonna feel this way for a while especially because my body is changing and trying to find it’s set point, and remind myself that my body is at its BEST when it reaches that... It’s still hard though, but I’m NOT giving up!  Recovery is the only option for me and I’m sticking with it! 💕

▫️drink 16-20oz upon waking each morning
▫️drink 16-20oz every time you eat
▫️drink 16-20oz as you close up the house for the night

By attaching a new habit to something we already do consistently and somewhat automatically, we are a lot more likely to stick with it!

I’m currently reading Atomic Habits by @james_clear and he talks about this idea of “habit stacking.” . Keeping it festive & fun with this loaded brekkie plate by the tree 🎄🤗 here I have a crispy fried egg 🍳, gfree toast with PB + honey 🥜🍯 and lotsss of fresh fruit 🍊🥝🍎 ...a little bit of everything!! 😋 plus some coffee on the side 💁🏼‍♀️☕️ I always make sure my breakfast includes a mix of energizing carbs, satisfying protein & healthy fats!! 💫 also, in the spirit of all things Christmas, tonight I’m going to a Christmas tree decorating party at Mitch’s 🎄❤️🎉 are you excited for the holiday season?! 🤔 anyway, I hope you have a great morning!! ✌🏻 #nourish #realfood

Topped half a big tub with @eattroo nutty granola which is another recent favourite, chunky granola with lots of nuts 😍 & some frozen raspberries 🙌🏼💫

It’s just as good as their other yogurts in terms of quality but it’s probably my new favourite because like I said I’m a little bit obsessed with raspberries!
