I can't believe I'm posting about another non-fiction this year. In the beginning of 2019, I took a pledge that I'll read more non-fiction books this year specially by women writers. I might have read/bought around a dozen already now (so proud!). Anyway, I'll focus on the book I'm currently reading i.e. It's Not About the Burqa! . . Honestly, I love non-fictions which makes me brainstorm and ruminate about what the essayists are talking about and how indifferent or similar my own ideologies are. After a long time, I'm having this exhilarating experience where I'm contemplating over every line of essay; I've read 6 out of 17 essays so far and I want to take it slow. Every essay is broadening my beliefs and ideologies that have been fed by patriarchy about Muslim women and their religion. For example, in one of the essays, the writer tells how a Muslim woman has the right to divorce her husband which basically shatters the stereotype built by 'culture' that women are oppressed and have no right to call for a divorce. . . But, some essays are making me think against the writer as well, particularly because, she's not sticking to the main topic and is trying to talk about different things at once. Still, I'll say, if you've been meaning to pick a book that will give a good workout to your brain cells, pick this book asap and see yourself how these Muslim women are shunning patriarchy and the very culture been stereotyped worldwide. . . Last year I took a picture of my #muslimshelfspace and I thought I’d do an updated one with my new additions. These are books that are written by Muslims and/or have Muslim characters and/or are set in a Muslim country. The only one I am yet to read is ‘An Unfinished Business’ by Boualem Sansal. Ad | I finished reading Schamlos (Shameless) a couple of days ago. It’s a feminist book that contains essays, conversations and reports written and created by three young Norwegian and Muslim women. It’s a brave and tough book that talks about the struggle of living in a westernised world, about having to juggle faith and everyday life. The authors discuss growing up, having to deal with the strict and often sexist expectations laid upon them by their Muslim community, and the constant Islamophobia that comes with wearing a Hijab. I wish it had been a bit bolder and delved a bit deeper, but overall it’s books like this that I want to see more often, especially on the German YA book market. What type of books do you wish existed when you were kids? . . I recently read an ARC of The Arabic Quilt by @ayakhalilauthor It’s a beautiful picture book coming out in March! . . The story is about a young Egyptian girl who moves to a new town, has to go to a new school where she doesn’t really know anyone. It shows her culture and traditions and how it may seem different to what others thing is the “norm” . . It’s a beautiful story of belonging and being proud of your roots and how everyone is different and that is wonderful because we all benefit from the diverse culture and traditions. It’s about acceptance and being kind and taking the time to learn rather than remaining ignorant. . . But it’s written in a way that it isn’t heavy or intense and kids will be able to enjoy and understand the book. . . Both the story and illustrations are amazing and it’s a book that I will definitely be gifting to my friends kids and one that I wish I had been able to read when I was young. Something that told me that even though I’m “different” I still belong here. . . These stories are even more important today because of all the hate that we see in the world. . . I highly recommend this book for all young kids and you know what even adults could learn from this. . . PS. Once in a while we open a particular door, far too wide and we let this strong cold gust of criticism get to us. We shudder and we shiver and slowly give into what people say. Allowing ourselves to turn into ice- refusing to act or move because we think we aren’t good enough to try again. I think the trick is to open the door a little, quickly grab hold of beneficial suggestions and shut the door. Then use all that beneficial information to do better next time. That is as much attention you should pay to adults critiquing a children’s book. Children make the best audience. Books, I thought my son wouldn’t like because the illustrations were not the best, he absolutely loves and asks me to read them over and over. Same with books where the text isn’t the best but he finds illustrations he can relate to. Just seeing a character doing something he enjoys like cooking or even finding cats in a book gets a reaction out of him. Children have the best questions and reactions to a story. They take a story for what it is: a story. Rather than dissecting the style of writing and illustrations and whether it matches up to mainstream books, children just love stories. And whenever I start doubting myself and what I have put out there into the world. I think about the kids I’ve read to- the true audience of my book and I feel reassured that even if my work is far from perfect, a child out there appreciates it. Alhamdulilah.

So It’s #MeAndMyFaithFriday and I’m continuing with the Stories of the Prophets! . . So last week I spoke about how Prophet Adam (as) was created so I’m going to continue on from that. If you want to read previous posts just search the tag! . . Adam (as) and Hawa (Eve) were originally living in paradise but Shaytan wanted to make them sin so they would be cast out like he was. So he found a way to communicate with them and convinced them to eat the fruit from the tree, which Allah had told them not to do. . . While the Christianity belief is that Eve convinced Adam, the Islamic belief is that they were both tempted and both were equal in their disobedience and they were both forgiven after they repented and asked Allah to forgive them. . . Adam said: “Our Lord we have wronged our own selves and if you do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be among the losers” Quran (7:23) . . This time I'm documenting all the things that work for me at different stages to remind myself for next time and to answer your writing/publishing questions. ⁣ ⁣ Starting with getting the very first draft out:⁣ ⁣ Map it out! So much changes as you get deeper into the writing but it helps to have an outline down. Since I write picture books, I divide my story into pages (@inkygirl has a template on her website). This way, all the thoughts in my head are untangled on paper and I can get to the next part - spinning them to into an actual story. Also, when I get stuck on one part I can skip to another and come back later.⁣ ⁣ Read! There's so much I love about this! I can read for work! I can dive into books and it's truly for research! But the best part about this is that reading in your genre and subject matter fills your head with all that rich and magical vocabulary that's later going to spill out onto the pages!⁣ ⁣ Brain dump: Write it all down as it comes. ⁣ ⁣ Use original words: If you're saying things you've read a dozen times in different books, take a pause. There has to be a better way to explain it, there has to be something different about your character and setting that only YOU can describe. Is the sky "buzzing"? Are her eyes "twinkling"? Is it "beautiful"? If yes, then you need to dig deeper for words that are more you! Highlight these words in your first draft to upgrade later.⁣ ⁣ Remember the pictures: Pictures are the soul of your book. So you don't need to describe the setting in your words too much. If something can be said in pictures, don't waste your words.⁣ ⁣ Make notes as you go: Did something just come to your mind about illustration? Does something need more research? Highlight, add a note and come back to it later. ⁣ ⁣ Don't judge yourself: The 1st draft is almost always bad, don't give up. The flow and magic comes out of hardcore editing. Trigger warning for islamophobia: I know most of these books are set in America but the treatment of Muslim people in countries around the world is absolutely atrocious. The recent bill passed by the Indian government is so fucking depressing and essentially an endorsement for the rest of the world to continue committing atrocities. Being selective about refugees immigrating to India for fear of “the wrong kind” of radicals and miscreants entering the country is not the way to go about trying to keep ~potential bad people~ out. It’s just a way to police who India decides to keep “safe.” If you’re in India (and even if you aren’t) please research and make it very very clear how horrible you think these kinds of laws are. Today, I received the wonderful news that a friend of mine had given birth to a beautiful, healthy baby boy alhamdulillah! May Allah grant him righteousness and make him the coolness to his parents' eyes. . Which brings me to some reflections. And I wouldn't be me if I don't reflect. Which is different from over-analyzing, I am definitely not that. Just ask my friends; they'll tell you I have the simple mind of a caveman at times😂. . . I looked at old photos of my children and found myself grieving a bit, if you will. When you become a mother, no one tells you as your children become older, each passing year comes with its own sense of loss. No one prepares you for the sadness that accompanies the happiness they reach with each milestone. Because each milestone accomplished is a milestone gone. . . When my youngest daughter started kindergarten, I lost myself a bit as I sensed the loss of my daughters' innocence dissipate into thin air. I grieve the days they spoke their first words; forever gone. I grieve the days they took their first wobbly steps; forever gone. I grieve the days they wrote their first letters; forever gone. I grieve the day they left the safety net of my arms to attend school; forever gone. I grieve the days their first fights with one another were about who won hide and seek; forever gone. . . 🍂But then we turn over a new leaf. And our children hit new milestones. And we bid them farewell once again. Thus is the circle of life. It's cruel; it's beautiful; it's inevitable. Just live it. Be in the moment, as they say. This book was a wonderful exploration of faith, culture, and identity. It's a collection of essays from various Muslim women in the UK. They're not writing with authoritative voices about the Muslim experience, rather they are exploring how being Muslim and coming from Muslim backgrounds impact their navigation of the world around them. Most importantly, this collection was meant to empower Muslim women to regain control of their narrative in a country that seeks to define them in racist/orientalist/xenophobic ways. I highly recommend y'all pick this one up. *The initiative: Quran-in-my-Life series* Pictures speak a thousand words, and what better way to learn and register about the elements of the Qur'an than beautiful and colorful illustrations? With this in mind, we drafted the idea of illustrating the first part of two books - and named it after our precious son Gilmaan Ali. On his first birthday, as a gift to him and a sadaqa-e-jaariya to impart this knowledge and the love of the Qur'an to children young and old, we launched Gilmaan Ali learns the names of the CHAPTERS Part 1 in September 2012. Efforts to compile and complete Part 2 of the series have been underway since then! We got 1000 copies printed in hardcover paperback - which is available for a small hadya to fulfill its printing costs. We are immensely thankful to our very dearest friend Syeda Hira Fatima Naqvi, who helped in illustrating our ideas into reality to make this first set of series happen. Fast forward to life today in 2019; we are settled in a beautiful city called Guelph in Ontario (Canada) since the past 3 years Alhamdulillah. Gilmaan (my 7yr old) has a sweet little brother Husayn who is 5 months old today. It’s a #MeAndMyFaithFriday post! Today I’m going to continue my posts on the Prophets in Islam. . . I’m going to share a little about Prophet Adam (as). He is mentioned quite a few times in the Quran so we actually learn quite a bit about him. . . He was created from clay which was collected from different parts of the earth. Scholars say this is why we have different coloured skin. Then Allah put his soul in the body and that was how he was born. He was created a fully grown adult. . . All the angels and beings in the heavens were told to bow to Adam but Iblees (satan) refused. Unlike the christian belief that he was an angel, in the Quran we are told he was a jinn. One of the most righteous and highly regarded so much so that he achieved a level of piety that was akin to the angels. . . But this made him arrogant and he said, why should I, a being of fire, bow to a being made of clay. When he refused to bow it was then that shaytan (satan) was banished from the heavens. . . Adam was taught the names of all the things and he lived in the heavens. For a while he was alone but then Allah created Hawa (Eve) to be his companion. . . PS.
