We know that the fashion industry is a major culprit behind modern slaverly. And right now in the UK, we have the opportunity to help ensure that companies are held accountable for eradicating modern slavery from their supply chains by strengthening the #ModernSlaveryAct.
In June this year, the government announced it would look at legislation to improve accountability to the Modern Slavery Act. This followed a joint petition between #FashionRevolution and @traidcraftexchange calling on the UK Gov to create a public database of corporate modern slavery statements. Now that this strengthening is underway, we need to press our elected officials to ensure that the registry publishes not only the modern slavery statements disclused, but also a list of the companies that fail to dislcose.
This kind of transparency will allow us as citizens and consumers to ensure that the brands we support act justly and radically to abolish modern slavery.
If you’re in the UK, make your voice heard and sign the petition at the link in our bio 💪🏻💪🏼💪🏽💪🏾💪🏿
People often tell me to ‘stop being so serious’. But I think it’s about time everyone started to get serious about the huge issues facing the world.
From climate change, to plastic pollution, to every person’s access to basic human rights - we need to start taking these issues seriously, and fast.
Did you know that 90 million people have experienced some form of slavery in the last 5 years? And that on any given day in 2016 there were 40.3 million people living in slavery? That’s more than any other time in human history, and here’s the kicker - we’re all connected to it.

“I think the biggest thing that we need to be aware of is that it actually exists in our community. I think they’re still perception that’s an overseas issue and at the end of the day, hundreds of thousands of Americans are trafficked for sex each year, including a lot of children.” - Brittany Dunn, Safe House Project Chief Development Officer #NationalNonprofitDay

The plight of Uyghur Muslims is currently at an all time high. Leaked reports, photographs and eyewitness accounts illustrate the travesty of the situation, but the international community must raise awareness in order to combat what human rights orgs. are calling the onset of a genocide. -

Trophy hunters may be allowed to shoot jaguars and other endangered wildlife “for sport” in Brazil’s critically important rainforests, conservationists are warning.
Parrots, otters and monkeys could also be killed or captured alive – even in nature reserves – in the country that is the world’s richest in biodiversity, according to opponents of the plan.
A bill that would legalise hunting, breeding and selling animals could mean commercial hunting grounds being set up for the first time in more than half a century, critics say.
They fear private hunters would be allowed to either shoot their targets dead or sell them to wildlife centres and zoos under the plan being considered by President Jair Bolsonaro's government.
It’s estimated at least 1,100 species in Brazil – home to the Amazonrainforests – are already threatened with extinction from deforestation, human expansion and poaching
And the country has lost more forest habitats than any other country since 2001 – 1.3 million hectares last year alone, research shows.
The bill, which repeals a ban on professional hunting, went before Brazil’s parliament in 2016 but was archived in the face of anger by conservationists.
However, under Mr Bolsonaro, who has loosened a raft of environmental protections since taking office this year, it has now been revived. “If approved, this project will bring a huge setback for Brazilian biodiversity. The slaughter of animals may even take place in protected areas,” warned Michel Santos of WWF-Brazil.
The Rainforest Rescue non-profit group said: “Brazilian environmentalists have criticised the bill sharply, describing hunting as cruel, immoral and a medieval ritual. “Legalised hunting would only cater to hunters’ lust for killing and boost the trade in threatened species. “The bill also plays into the hands of the Brazilian arms industry and arms exporters, particularly those in the United States.” But Valdir Colatto, the MP who first drafted the proposal, hit back at critics, saying 30 per cent of profits from game reserves would go towards recovering and protecting wildlife.
The bill sought to regulate an area that has no rules, he said, preventing smuggling,

President Donald Trump’s administration is making drastic changes to how the Endangered Species Act (ESA) is applied. The revisions weaken protections for threatened species, and will allow federal agencies to conduct economic analyses when deciding whether to protect a species.
The changes, finalized by the Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the National Marine Fisheries Service on 12 August, are among the most sweeping alterations to the law since it was enacted in 1973.
The US government says that these updates will ease the burden of regulations and increase transparency into decisions on whether a species warrants protections. But critics say that the revisions cripple the ESA’s ability to protect species under increased threat from human development and climate change. “These changes tip the scales way in favour of industry,” says Brett Hartl, government-affairs director for the environmental advocacy group the Center for Biological Diversity, who is based in Washington DC. “They threaten to undermine the last 40 years of progress.” The Attorneys General of California and Massachusetts have already announced their intention to sue the Trump administration over the changes, which they call unlawful.
Limits to protections
Chief among the changes is the removal of blanket protections for threatened animals and plants.
Until now, any species deemed threatened — a category for organisms at risk of becoming endangered — by the FWS automatically received the same protections as endangered species. They include bans on killing threatened and endangered species. Now, those protections will be determined on a case-by-case basis, a move which will probably reduce overall protections for species that are added to the threatened list, says Hartl.
The revisions also narrow the scope of those protections. Previously, government officials considered threats that would affect a species in the “foreseeable future”, such as climate change. Now, they have leeway to determine the time period meant by the foreseeable future, and can only consider threats that are “likely” to occur in that time frame. Critics say that this weaker language could allow regulators to

33-year-old Georgia man will serve no prison time after keeping a teenage girl in captivity for a year, imprisoning her in a dog cage and allegedly forcing her to have sex with him against her will.
On Thursday, Michael Wysolovski pleaded guilty to first-degree cruelty to children and interstate interference with custody. He was sentenced to 10 years probation and eight months in prison, though the judge said that since he had already served prison time in the lead-up to his trial, he had already completed his sentence. Wysolovski will also have to register for the sex offender database for life.
Wysolovski initially met the then-15-year-old girl in an online anorexia support forum, where she expressed her unhappiness with her life and her desire to run away from home. The two corresponded for a year until Wysolovski traveled to her hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina, to pick her up and bring her back to his home in Duluth, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia. (The girl was 16 at the time, the official age of consent in Georgia, so Wysolovski was not charged with child molestation.) From there, prosecutors alleged, Wysolovski and the girl engaged in a relationship that evolved from consensual BDSM sex acts, which simulated nonconsensual sex, into actual nonconsensual sex, which involved “excessive force.” The girl was reported as missing in North Carolina for more than a year, until she told an anorexia support forum poster about her situation with Wysolovski, who then contacted the FBI. Wysolovski was arrested in 2017 and charged with rape and aggravated sodomy after police found the girl at his home.
According to testimony from the victim’s father, the girl was found extremely malnourished, and Wysolovski had kept her in a dog cage, leading her to develop ringworm and back problems. She later told the court that Wysolovski had submitted her to water torture, which led to her developing a debilitating fear of baths and showers; she also said that he used her eating disorder against her, severely restricting her food intake, telling her how many calories she was allowed to consume, and repeatedly telling her that no one would ever love her if she gained any

That is why our teams work together with police to prevent crime, protect people and bring traffickers to justice.👮♀️ We also work alongside governments, policy experts, public sector professionals and casework practitioners to spark systemic long-lasting change!

Thank you to Survivor leader Tanya Street, ODU Professor Bridget Anderson, and the panel of industry leaders for speaking at our “Hiding in Plain Sight” Symposium.
This can be an overwhelming issue but the first step we all can take is to become more educated on the topic. Sex + labor trafficking is hiding in plain sight right here in America. It’s important we recognize when it’s happening and know what to do when it is. ❌ #everyONEmatters#SafeHouseProject
@bostoncollegeuk was the first college in the UK to work with the GLAA in embedding the subject of modern slavery and labour exploitation across its range of academic and vocational courses. ⠀
The year-long course saw all 1,500 college students given a tutorial on workers’ rights and a guide to spotting the signs of modern slavery. An Employment Rights and Responsibilities Week provided students with practical sessions designed to equip them with knowledge about how to protect themselves from exploitation. We also commissioned a creative arts brief for more than 100 visual arts and media students. A selection of their work can be found on our website. ⠀
A suite of teaching and learning resources are also available via the link if you want to download them and use them in your own school or college.⠀
