Part 2 of how I started my career as an artist. 👩🏻🎨 I’m busy working on more moon paintings from my new series today, & I’ve been spending quite a while washing & prepping hundreds of pieces of sea glass & beach pottery, making them ready for painting, so expect to see some new collections soon! (Although not these particular pieces - they all sold back in May). 🌊🤗💎✨ If you haven’t seen the post where I first talked about becoming a full-time artist, it’s a few posts back (the one with the little bird looking at a starry sky!). Anyway, I’ll continue...
For years I had other jobs alongside my art, & so it was a constant juggling act to try & find the energy at the end of the working day to devote some time to painting. My dream was to become a full-time artist, but at the same time I was scared to give up the safety of regular paid work. The last job I had before I became a full-time artist & illustrator was working in an independent clothes shop. I loved that job & really enjoyed my time there. I gradually cut down my hours in the shop as I became more successful as a painter, eventually working there for just one day each week. When I found even that one day hard to fit in to my schedule, I knew that the time had come to concentrate fully on my art. It was incredibly scary to know that the only income I would have would be through selling my work, & at that point I sold nowhere near as many paintings as I sell today! I took part in lots of local art exhibitions & in those days it was very hit-and-miss; sometimes I’d sell nothing & sometimes it would go exceptionally well & I’d sell everything! I still remember that heart-sinking feeling of disappointment when I’d go to pick up any unsold work only to be told that I hadn’t sold anything. 😔 Whenever this happened, I had to somehow keep the faith that I would be able to make a living from my art, because my confidence would obviously take a knock. I’d often be scraping by on very little money, which was tough. I don’t want to go into detail about how I felt sometimes (it actually makes me feel sad to think of it even now) but you can probably imagine. (Oops, I’ve run out of space - Part 3 coming soon!). 🖤
