The more you deem carbs as bad or the most you restrict them THE MOST THEY PERSIST.

You can try and avoid them all you want- and it won’t allow you to have a healthy relationship with them.

No need to see these foods as “carbs.” See them for what they are- FOOD. They are just food.

One time I remember I was so scared of a bagel and cream cheese 🥯 it caused me lots of anxiety every time I drove by the bagel shop. The little girl I was babysitting would ask me everyday to stop for a bagel  after school and I just couldn’t do it- I would make an excuse every time.
.
Then one day I said screw it and decided to surprise her - we both chose a bagel and sat down together and ate it. It was great! I was like, really??? It’s just some bread and some dairy spread on it. What have I been so afraid of. I saw the bagel for what it was- food. And THAT was one of the turning points in my life when carbs stopped being so dang scary!
.
So in other words, eat the damn carbs when you want or don’t - listen to your body. Do what feels good (not what the diet mentality is telling you). Most importantly give yourself permission to eat and stop giving away all of your power to them. They want to be on your team- let them!!

Have compassion❤️.
Forgive yourself🧡.
Make a vow to EAT 🥙 at the next signal of hunger.
Notice and sit with the discomfort🧘🏽‍♀️ then do something to help alleviate it. Go for a short walk or do some stretching or yoga to aid digestion, take a Tums if you need it, journal, read, do a crossword, call a friend.
And tune into your body- the next time you are hungry- 🌟EAT🌟. If you wake up the next day, still feeling full or uncomfortable, I encourage you to STILL nourish your body that morning, even if it is with something light 🍵that will not feel heavy in your stomach.

foodfreedom Even after you’ve seen the science regarding the failure rate of dieting, and the evidence from your own history with dieting - even when you KNOW that diets don’t work - it’s not easy to give them up for good. When it seems like everyone you know is on one diet or another, and when every time you log into social media you’re overwhelmed with weight loss ads and before and after photos, it’s tough not to try “just one more diet.” If you feel like this, it’s normal - show yourself some compassion. You’ve likely spent years following diet rules, and your whole life surrounded by diet culture. Leaving that mentality behind and moving towards food freedom takes time - don’t give up on yourself 💗

When my eating disorder shifted from Anorexia to Exercise Bulimia, I remember looking down at my body and thinking I had become so much larger than I was. At the time, I was still much smaller than I am today.

People say they feel "fat" or disgusting (something I also used to say all the time) when what this is really reflecting is the heaviness of suppressed emotions and bullshit conditioned beliefs they're carrying. I've also experienced the opposite when I started to heal my relationship with food and stopped restricting. I'd feel good in my body, then see a picture and realize my body was bigger than I thought it was. This just showed the disconnect I had with my body. The avoidance I had. Over the years, building that connection with her has been a big part of healing. Certainty is a need we often try to meet through controlling our body by controlling our food and exercise. We feel unsafe and so a part of us tries to create safety through control. What we really need is to connect with our body, regulate our nervous system and access the feeling of safety within. Instead of projecting unworthiness on our body we get to parent the child within who feels this way. We meet the need internally, rather than trying to change our body to meet that need. Losing weight won't get you the feeling you're looking for. Plenty of women can tell you that. It's like slapping a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. No external fix, will solve an internal issue. It is a non-negotiable. An appointment I keep every day, whether I’m feeling it or not. And these first weeks of school I’m not. 🤯 But I was prepared for that and I promised myself I would not make excuses. ✋

Oh PS - as of today I’ve lost 50 lbs. 
Fifty. I am happy, yes. But mostly, I just feel at peace. This has become such a natural lifestyle; I don’t obsess over it, I don’t worry about it. I trust the process and it works. ✌️✌️

When Emma first approached me she made it quite obvious her boobs were causing her immense pain in her upper / lower back. A little something about me: Quesadillas are my favorite happy hour/heavy appetizer food at restaurants. In high school, we would go to @applebees at like 10pm and I would always get their quesadilla platter with salsa, sour cream, and Guac. It was my jam.

Well this was normal dinner hour and homemade, but it still hit that nostalgia spot I needed. Loaded with veggies and a vegan twist on queso using cashews (check out @detoxinista’s site for the recipe), we all pretty much licked our plates clean. Already looking forward to the leftovers tomorrow for lunch!

The point is, why compare at all?? 🏡 We are incredibly fortunate to live in the circumstances we do... and we also have made choices to prioritize travel and experiences (and some medical costs...ahem, IVF) over home renovations or moving someplace different. I realized that feeling bad about it (and even letting other people’s faux concern about crime in our neighborhood get to me) was giving their opinions too much power. 🚫 It’s good to have goals in your life to keep you motivated - and that can include improving the space where you live. Nothing against that and I hope we do it one day. It’s just not cool when caring about other people’s opinions and comparing your life to theirs is keeping you from enjoying the life you have and you start living your life according to what other people think you should do. 🙅🏻‍♀️ So tell me... write it here to set an intention... where in your life can you let go of caring about an opinion from someone whose priorities are different from yours?

BBQ’d the salmon in my outdoor HOT PINK crocs 💁🏼‍♀️😂 & I even tossed the brussel sprouts on the grill after I steamed them bc who doesn’t love a nice char on their veg 🙋‍♀️

In intuitive eating we refer to that unkind voice as the food police.  This brain chatter delights in bossing us around while filling us with self doubt.  A tell tale sign is if we find ourselves thinking in black and white terms around food or our body.  We can expect that part of our intuitive eating journey will be confronting the food police.  It may seem strange to consider our thoughts 💭. But they are very powerful!  It can be helpful to practice new ways of thinking about ourselves.

Standing like @amycuddy in a power pose is optional but absolutely awesome. 💯

Do you find yourself reaching for the potato chips to curb the hunger pangs? 🍟

Or do you have more of a sweet tooth? 🍬🍫🍨 Well as you can see, I have a serious sweet tooth and yes I keep a stash of sugary treats in the top of my cupboard, out of view of the small people.

I'm not proud of it and I certainly don't want to model this habit for my children, but sometimes? I just have to give in, try not to stress over it and continue to try my best to nourish my body instead 🤷

This is a simple smoothie that I add before I eat my first big meal. I always workout fasted and by time I get to my first meal after the gym I have already been fasting for about 6-7hrs. I utilize this smoothie to help boost my metabolism right before eating a huge meal.

You don’t have to use the exact same ingredients I use, feel free to mix it up and try out different fruits and vegetables. I will recommend always having kale and spinach in the smoothie since they are amongst some of the top super foods.

I like to use water to mix with my ingredients, if you prefer juices then that’s also fine. Just make sure they are on the natural side and not filled with a bunch of artificial sweeteners.

HELP BOOST YOUR METABOLISM by @fitdadexpert . . This is a simple smoothie that I add before I eat my first big meal. I always workout fasted and by time I get to my first meal after the gym I have already been fasting for about 6-7hrs. I utilize this smoothie to help boost my metabolism right before eating a huge meal. . . Truth be told, the old me would have come home and run on the treadmill to burn off the extra calories. Then, I would have gotten up in the morning and run again. You know, just in case I missed any calories from the night before😬⠀

Here’s what happened....today was a well planned day of balanced and portioned food. I used all my foods I prepared ahead of time. ⠀
Then the staff meeting happened....and zucchini fries were ordered (among other things, but the fries were my weakness) ⠀
•⠀
I didn’t have to eat them. ⠀
I was prepared. ⠀
I had brought my own dinner ~ salad loaded with fresh ingredients and a veggie burger. ⠀
•⠀
But, I had the fries. ⠀
I reached for them, and put some on top of my salad. ⠀
I guess this was the “old me”, trying to play a trick on my mind, thinking that by putting the fries on my salad, they would be healthier.⠀
•⠀
And you know what? ⠀
I didn’t die. ⠀
I didn’t even gain an extra 10 pounds. ⠀
•⠀
I did enjoy my fries. ⠀
And I will continue on. ⠀
I will get up tomorrow and go about my day. ⠀
•⠀
I am human. ⠀
You are too. ⠀
We are presented with food choices everyday. ⠀
We are given the opportunity to fuel our body with wholesome ingredients or fried, over processed ingredients. ⠀
•⠀
Here’s the thing though...we get to start over each day. We can make different and new choices each day. ⠀
•⠀
It’s that simple. ⠀
No need to beat our bodies up with extreme cardio or workouts. ⠀
No need for negative self talk. ⠀
⠀
I have the tools I need to get back on track tomorrow and feel amazing! ⠀
Who is ready to start the day fresh tomorrow? ⠀

Gosh. I know these are tough questions but it’s important to look at where were at & where we ultimately want to be with love & grace for ourselves (of course)

I’m going to lead by example & am going to tell you what I see in this... I see a beautiful woman driven to make a REAL lasting impact & help as many women conquer food and body struggles as possible.

I see a confident woman, one who’s learned she’s so much more than her body. One that is striving to live a life of purpose

I see a sweet soul who feels FREE because she’s found what it means to feel safe in her own body.

I see a wife who is so deeply loved by her husband & is able to freely accept that love.

I see a joyful woman who cares more about being present than being perfect.

I don't normally talk about weight loss on my social media. There are a few reasons, but a lot of it has to do with my struggle of not being "back to my pre-pregnant" self. I've done a lot of work toward being in a place where it's okay for me to not be there - and to recognize that my body grew another human...so it may/will never be exactly the same as it was before that little miracle! That said, Whole30 has been my constant. I didn't lose the weight/make my progress during one Whole30. Some of it was lost on a round, but Whole30 has taught (and continues to teach) me how to approach eating after a reset in a more thoughtful way. And when I stray too far from the foods I know make me feel best, I return to what always helps me to mentally feel in control of my food choices. My progress has been slow, and that's okay. As a person who has struggled with binge-eating disorder since the 4th grade, it can be easier in some ways to fall back into old patterns. I'm planning on doing a Whole30 reset in September because I need it for my mental health and because I want to continue to be on the path toward better health for myself. Whole30 is not about weight loss - truly. It CAN be a part of it, but overall it's about promoting healthy psychological relationships with food, healing your gut, reducing inflammation, and resetting your hormones. If you want to do a Whole30, please do - it changed my life. You certainly don't NEED me as a coach. All the information is available for free online. Growing up, my mama would make this & now I get to make it with her. I love making cultural dishes with her b/c she teaches me the origins & different flavors of what feels like ‘home’ to her. foodfreedom Cookie Chronicles part 4! 🍪✨ I eat dessert pretty much nightly, and also daily. I have a “lunch dessert” and dessert after dinner. They vary-cookies, Reese’s, Twix (my 2 fave chocolates- what are yours!), dark chocolate with nuts, a cupcake, froyo 🍫🍦🧁 And now I  always have dessert on-hand at home.

It was actually a big deal when I was able to keep a pack of cookies at home because I used to have a hard time NOT eating all or most of it at once. But the day came when I brought home a pack of Oreo’s and I was SO excited and proud! ☺️

Proud not because I had the “will power” to resist the whole box. Rather, proud that I had allowed cookies and other foods back into my life to the point that they were no longer on a pedestal. And that meant that a couple satisfied me without feeling the need to eat them all- because they’d be there again tomorrow 💖
•
So now I raise a cookie to Food Freedom (wow I love the way that automatically capitalizes!!! 🙌), to those who have found it, and to anyone who is working towards it. It’s absolutely attainable and I know you can find it ❤️

foodfreedom Let's talk. Just a few months ago, I did not understand what #intuitiveeating really was. I thought it meant I could eat whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted it. In a sense, that's right. But it's different than what I thought. Let me explain.

I used to think that if I didn't control what and how much I ate, I would gorge on junk food forever and end up morbidly obese. If you eat intuitively, that won't happen.

Intuitive eating is based on a deep and loving relationship with your whole self. Intuitive eating means trusting your body to crave the food it needs and wants to feel it's best. And just going with it.

It takes work though. After much reflection and self-awareness, I know what my body likes and doesn't like. .
One key to eating intuitively is to pause before you eat to make sure you REALLY want the food and it will make you feel good. .
I know that an Oreo is going to taste great but I also know it will make my stomach hurt, which isn't good for my body. But sometimes I really just want the Oreo and that's okay too. Beating myself up about eating an Oreo is worse than eating the darn thing!

I didn’t think he would stick it out... especially through the family fish fry at around day 15 🤣 That was tough for both of us!  We talked about some of the struggles at his work like passing on lunch with the guys to the Chinese buffet or skipping the donuts in the office. .

When you set goals for yourself, it can feel selfish to say no to someone else’s agenda.  My husband is a people pleaser so its a little harder for him to tell people no, but it has to be done in order to reach your own health and fitness goals.  Focus on your agenda, reach your goals, and make your-damn-self happy!  I promise people won’t hold a grudge for you denying their cookies or skipping lunch to better your health.  If they do?  Then they’re insecure about their choices.  It’s as simple as a “no thank you!” .
.
Not once has anyone given us grief for eating this way over the last month.  Actually we’ve been supported and encouraged.  For now, it seems (to others) to be “just a diet”, but soon it will be considered to be the way we eat! .

My PRO TIP: always use a meat thermometer!  ALWAYS!  It’s the best way to have perfectly cooked juicy meat!

Now-a-days, 𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘦 is on a low carb diet. ⁣⁣
But that is 𝐍𝐎𝐓 the secret sauce to weight loss. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
5 women reached out to me recently.
They all lost 10-20 lbs by trying keto BUT every single one of them gained the weight back AFTER they stopped dieting. 
And they were disappointed. ⁣⁣
What I want you to understand is that, ⁣⁣

OK - I know what you’re thinking. A diet consisting of mostly carbs can’t be healthy. You’re right. ⁣⁣
It’s about portion control here. Often times, people choose to go fully “low carb” as it seems easier than portioning their carb intake. ⁣⁣
But what happens when you “stop eating carbs” is you eventually 𝐛𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐞 on it OR 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 in the protein or fats categories resulting in 𝐰𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐠𝐚𝐢𝐧. ⁣⁣
𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘪𝘯 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵. ⁣⁣

What most people don’t understand is that NOT all carbs are created equal. ⁣⁣
There is a thing known as SIMPLE vs COMPLEX carbs. ⁣
Focus on eating majority COMPLEX as opposed to SIMPLE carbs.⁣⁣
COMPLEX carbs = whole grains, beans, oats, fruits, veggies, potatoes. Make these your primary source of carb intake. ⁣⁣
SIMPLE carbs = cookies, pastries, ice cream, candy. These can 𝐀𝐋𝐒𝐎 be apart of your diet but don’t make them your primary source. ⁣⁣
My advice, don’t totally cut carbs. Just don't. ⁣

foodfreedom Hola babes! Truth moment. I’ve been scrolling thru @tessemaes insta feed lately because it has been giving me ALL the food inspo. I got this shrimp taco idea from them and HELLO. It is going to be a regular around here. And that peach salsa? SO GOOD.

Do yourself a favor and hit the save button on this one. I promise, you’re going to want to make it!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Add 1lb of pre cooked, thawed, peeled and de-veined shrimp to skillet. Add 2 tbsp @tessemaes lemon garlic dressing, salt and pepper to the shrimp and cook on medium. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
While the shrimp is cooking, make you some of this peach salsa 😍
Combine the following:
1 diced peach
Thinly sliced red onion (I used about 3 “slices”)
1 small jalapeño, diced
As much fresh chopped cilantro as you’d like
Add the juice of a quarter of a lime and some salt to the salsa and mix thoroughly. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Add shrimp to tortilla. (For #whole30 use lettuce wraps. For anything else I suggest @sietefoods tortilla. I was out and these corn tortillas fell apart SO fast)
Top with peach salsa and @tessemaes habenero ranch. And then send your thanks bc you’re gonna love it 😘

I used to hate the fact that I cried so much, but like I always say feelings are meant to be felt & you can’t push your tears back into your eyeballs ;) Your emotions want to be released, so let em’. The more you rebel & resist, the more you’ll feel pain and angst. Releasing emotions releases YOU. ⁣

⚡️some people will come into life, and stay, and some will leave, but you don’t have to be scared of rejection. I’ve had a few very close friendships soar & thrive, then end. It’s been one of my most painful things to try to make sense of, & let go of. It’s why I still think I sabotage good things sometimes, because I’d rather push them away, before they push me away. But the reality is you can’t force a a square peg into a round hole. Relationships are actually not supposed to be hard, they’re supposed to be equal, respective & make you happy. Letting go, creates space for more in-alignment relationships to come your way with time, & more inner-joy to build.⁣

⚡️there is more to life that what you weigh. I spent my best years at war with my body. I didn’t celebrate my health, life circumstances, or potential, I only cared about what I weighed. I was obsessed with the scale, counting calories, pounding away on the treadmill, & how good I could be each day. I was consumed. After working through my relationship with my body, I seriously feel like it opened up a whole new world of opportunity, mental space, energy, connection, self-growth, acceptance, peace, & joy that I would never sacrifice for the “perfect” body.⁣

I mean, my parents did the best they could & I love them to death but it wasn’t easy.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ So when food was available, we ATE! I have 3 younger brothers as well so it was always a “get what you can while it’s there” sort of situation.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ The first pivotal shift in my journey began when I went through a horrible break-up from my highschool sweetheart which resulted in me 𝘢𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘣 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘯𝘭𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘐 𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘵 𝘐 𝘤𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥, 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘰𝘥𝘺.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ At the time, I claimed I just wanted to be “healthy” and fit.⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I joined a gym and before I knew it, I was exercising 3-4 hours/day MINIMUM! ⁣⁣⁣⁣ My diet became super restrictive, to a point where I only allowed myself chicken, egg whites, veggies and MAYBE a rice cake if I was good. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ 𝘈𝘭𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘮𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘴, 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘭𝘺 𝘐 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘤𝘬 𝘵𝘰 𝘮𝘺 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘭 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘦𝘹𝘦𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘦 𝘐 𝘨𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I was being celebrated by everyone around me for my transformation that I was sharing all over social media, which of course fueled my fire even more.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ @courtneyhillfit was my identity...⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ This lasted for a couple of years, but my body could only take the restriction and extreme exercise for so long.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ Long story short, I had cheat meals/days that turned into full blown binges. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I would zone out and binge on about 10,000 calories in under 2 hours for 1-2 days (always at night) and then restrict and exhaust my body for the rest of the week.⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I also used diuretics, laxatives, enemas, Epsom salt baths, cranberry juice to try and compensate for what I ate. ⁣⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣⁣ I would search for everything and anything to... ↘️CONTINUED IN COMMENTS↘️

- 1 orange, pealed
- 1 peach
- 1/2 cup vanilla greek yogurt
- 1 date
- 1 tbsp flax seeds
- 1 pinch cinnamon
- 1-2 cups ice
- almond milk to desired consistency

Toss all ingredients in a blender and let that baby rip. I topped mine with a crumbled @kindsnacks breakfast bar for some extra texture
*If you just have plain yogurt use that and add and extra date/some honey and if you don’t have/like flax add a tablespoon of almond butter!

Tonight’s reminder: You’re not one step more or one step less than right where you’re supposed to be. Healing isn’t linear, and it’s unrealistic to expect that you would be anywhere else than exactly where you are. Just because you’re HERE now doesn’t mean it will always be this way, that you’ve lost hope, or that you’re too far gone to get better. You’re allowed to be imperfect.
