As you can see from the above image, most wraps aren’t much different to 2 slices of bread...

➩ Most wrap contains approximately the same calories and carbohydrate as 2 slices of bread 🍞
➩ Some wraps can provide even MORE calories and carbohydrate secondary to the ingredients being compressed

➩ There are now some wraps that contain approximately the same amount of carbohydrate as 1 slice of bread! I will be sharing my favourite option with you tomorrow! ❤️

➩ There are low carb options available in both varieties, this doesn’t mean ‘low calorie’ ...it definitely isn’t! However they might be a useful option for certain people - context is everything!

➩ With both pick higher fibre, wholegrain varieties, Aim for > 3g of fibre per serve, taking the wrap size into consideration! (If you really dislike the wholegrain/wholemeal options the high-fibre low GI options are a compromise)

To find options with whole grains you'll need to read the the ingredients list.
⠀
Look for the words ‘wholegrain’ or ‘whole’ on. Try to select products that contain at least 51% wholegrains.

✔️REMEMBER which ever you pick make sure the filling consists of lean protein, non-starchy veg and a healthy spread to create a balanced healthy and filling meal.

As “gluten-free” gains more and more popularity, food companies are flocking to the potential marketing opportunity and selling these “healthy” gluten-free products that are potentially worse for the health of the general public than eating a slice of glutenous bread (celiac diagnosis is a different story).

If you go down the aisles of your grocery store, you will find an overwhelming amount of gluten-free options of all your favorite desserts and snacks. Gluten-free cookies, cakes, muffins, crackers, breads, pastas, cereals...they’re still processed junk food.

Many of these products are filled with highly refined carbohydrates and modified starches, added and artificial sugars, inflammatory omega-6 vegetable oils, food dyes, food stabilizers, and gums.

The processing of these grains and modified starches strips these products of fiber and are void of essential micronutrients, causing a blood sugar avalanche and fluctuating hunger cravings. This spells disaster for anyone trying to lose weight and sets the stage for diabetes.

I like breaking carbohydrates into the following categories:

🔸Nutritious Carbohydrates: provide the body energy + nutrients like dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals. These carbohydrates fit into our core food groups ⠀

🔸Less-nutritious Carbohydrates: They provide the body with energy but not much else. These carbohydrates still fit into a balanced diet when eaten occasionally.

You DON’T have to avoid carbohydrates if you are diabetic ❌ INSTEAD it is more important to focus on the QUALITY  and the QUANTITY that you consume.

The amount of carbohydrate each person consumes will depend on that INDIVIDUAL. Blood glucose monitoring will provide you with a better understanding about what carbohydrate portions are right for you.

Does a ketogenic diet/Low carb help with managing diabetes? The research says Yes. However their sustainability (for the rest of your life sorta thing) is a factor that is often questioned...

I believe (and see this daily) the reason people see a benefit in following a ‘low carb diet’ is simply because the diet they were consuming prior to going ‘low carb’ contained excessive amounts of carbohydrates (well above what our dietary guidelines suggest) in the first place. ‘Diets’ also often mean a complete elimination of the ‘less nutritious carbohydrates’

Instead of eliminating carbohydrates....look at the types of carbohydrates you are predominantly selecting and the portions you are having them in....focus on incorporating nutritious carbohydrates into your diet daily but also allow for the less nutritious occasionally because balance is key.

It is important to remember that everyone will be at a different stage with their diabetes journey and therefore the information provided needs to be individualised by their diabetes team. It is not a simple meal plan fix! Factors like pancreatic function, activity levels and age need to be considered!

Wee Watermelon 🍉 Currently the size of a golf ball. 🍉 A healthy yield largely depends on pest management. Organically keeping aphids and mites away can be quite a challenge. 🍉 Crop rotation, predator insects, peppermint, garlic, cayenne, and nasturtiums are some of the elements in my 2019 natural pest-control arsenal. 🍉 Last year’s melon patch was a fail, so fingers crossed!

I behaved (for the most part) and only put smart foods that are going to fuel my body (fresh vegetables, tons of fruit and whole grains) into my cart. I love summer for fresh produce and our garden is already loaded with kale and mixed greens for bomb salads and the best fixins! .
So, i really wanted to mix up a dreamy, garden fresh, bomb salad this afternoon, but it was Sushi Wednesday!! #stopthecart

After seeing @fengchabayarea on instagram for the longest time, I finally got to try them out when I was back home last weekend! They have a variety of different flavors, but I ended up choosing the sea salt boba cake. This was like drinking a cheese foam drink, but with a cake underneath.. really interesting and yummy 😋

This was actually my second consecutive boba stop, so I opted for something refreshing (lemon tea). Definitely need to come back to try their dirty boba (creme brulee) that they’re known for! 🤭

I had money put aside for the last grocery top-up. The shopping that I had done up until that stage came to €68.79. I had €31.21 left for the top-up. As it turned out my mum collected the kids a day earlier than expected so they were gone on their holidays by lunchtime on Saturday. ;
I don't know about you but, when it is just my husband and I, I can get pretty lazy with food. So I made some bread ( well, really my bread maker made the bread, but I am happy to take full credit it) and we happily had toasted sandwiches for most of the weekend. ;
I know, I know, I am totally being lazy, but neither of us we up for cooking and takeaways & eating out is off the menu for me this year. So, sometimes it is just nice to lean on easy peasy food like sandwiches one-pot rice dishes. ;
As my food budget is €100 per week for all the 52 weeks of the year ( ie €5200 total). I need to make sure that some weeks come in below budget so that I can spend more on big the times like Christmas, Halloween and other such events.

Yes this! @ryanc_fit 🔥 There's a growing trend lately around swapping foods for "healthier" or "better" alternatives. High(er) protein cheese, lower carb/calorie pastas - the list goes on. Maybe I'm missing something with these - but to me, it's just adding more complexity to your life. - Here's the diet industries best-kept secret - you can easily make your foods lower carb, higher protein, lower/higher calorie - it's called portion control.⁣⁣ ⁣⁣- You don't need to remove a food and replace it with an alternative - you just need to change how much you're eating. - The marketing and the people online reviewing it will tell you "IT'S JUST LIKE REGULAR BREAD!" - that does my head in - it's not like regular bread. If it was like regular bread, then that's what regular bread would be. - Changing your body does not need to be a complicated process. You do not need to turn your entire diet on it's head. Small changes, made over time and maintained consistently is what is going to bring you results. - Yeah, these products all seem great, and if you like them and they work for you then great. So, what should you do if you’d like to avoid hidden sugar?? ⠀
👉🏼 Ignore the words on the front of the box and check the back instead! 🥫 Doing a label check is key in determining whether a food contains a  ton of sugar 🔑 ⠀
👉🏼 Know what words to look for. 📖Sugar goes by over 60 different names! When you’re checking the label, look for words like syrup, nectar, honey and molasses - along with any words that end in “ose” (I.e. fructose, sucrose, dextrose etc.)⠀
👉🏼 Be cautious in the drink aisle 🥤 an easy way to overload on hidden sugar is by drinking it! A can of cola has 39g of sugar (which exceeds the daily recommendation for both men and women 😓). Being thoughtful about your liquid intake is an easy way to cut out some of that hidden sweetener 🍹⠀
👉🏼 And remember, artificial sweeteners (e.g. aspartame, saccharin, sucralose etc.) cause a similar glycemic response to normal sugar, so be mindful with your intake of those as well 🤓 #sugarseries

So if you are at all like me, and suffer from the sweetest tooth imaginable to man, you know that its not as easy as “just don’t have it”. Oh… just don’t have it??? Never thought of that! Thanks!!! .
So if you are in the current situation where you either have a sugar hangover from the weekend, or alternatively, just cant stop having something with a cup of tea, try looking at what you are deficient in. The chances are, there’s a lack of magnesium in the body.

Magnesium regulates insulin, glucose and neurotransmitter dopamine. Zinc also plays a big part. Deficiencies in these will lead to sugar cravings (as well as eating lots of sugar!!) particularly chocolate. 
If its magnesium you are after, try have a couple of almonds. I know…. They aren’t as exciting as chocolate but it will curb the craving. If it’s a case that you don’t want or like them, melt down some 70%+ dark chocolate and dip some strawberries in it. 
Drink water. Before you pull the plug and eat half a packet of biscuits…. Satisfying the demons for all of 30 seconds, fly out to the kitchen and drink a glass of water…. Or 2.Generally, if you are lacking in the likes of zinc, magnesium, calcium or chromium, your bodys dehydration will mask itself as a sugar craving. Bauld little fecker. 
So if you need to implement some of these, start now. Ditch your evening cuppa and have some water!

It's starting to bear fruit now, and the first one ripened this morning. eatsmart for today breakfast i followed a recipe from @niomismart book, eat smart. it is called the carrot cake porridge.
i’ve made this a few times before and it is definitely a favourite, it feels like a treat while being good for you.
i topped mine off with some raspberries that i had picked from my garden the day before, some chia and linen seeds as well as some extra soy milk for the consistency that i like.
definitely a delicioussss breakfast ~~~~~~~

eatsmart Comfort food can be healthy and tasty. 
This entire meal was prepped with what I had in my fridge, using groceries from TRADER JOE’S  in under 30 minutes. 
Chicken Sausage with Onion and Peppers :

Sauté three large Bell Peppers, one large Onion, 3 minced Garlic Cloves, in olive oil for a few minutes 
Add 8oz package sliced Baby Bella Mushrooms

Add one package sliced Italian Style Sweet Chicken sausage, 
Add Three fresh Corn off the Cob but you can add TJ frozen roasted corn as well. 
Give it a good stir and season it with S&P and Coconut Aminos 
Add fresh herbs. I used Thyme and Parsley 
Herbed Cauliflower Rice:

Sauté one finely diced Small Red Onion and finely diced 8 Oz White Mushrooms In 2 tbsp Olive Oil.

Add two packages of Fresh Riced Cauliflower

Cook the rice for only a few minutes.

Add chopped fresh Thyme, Mint and Parsley off the heat. 
Stir well. S&P to taste.
