Scrambled eggs and avocado on toast.
This is so simple and quick to make. It is also kid friendly.
It got the healthy fats, antioxidants, fibre and vitamin E from the avocado, complex carbs and B vitamins from toast AND protein, vitamin D, iron, omega 3 and much more from the eggs.

What I did:
Toasted 2 slices of bread in the toaster.
While it was toasting, I heated a pand with EVOO.
I added 2 eggs to the pan, a pinch of salt and scrambled with a spatula I don’t add milk or butter. I’ve never actually made scrambled eggs with that because my mum never did for us, so I guess I just stuck to what I know 😄. It still tastes great!) Constantly mixing until cooked.
Then I put the egg and avocado on the toast.

Delicious & sweet. And it’s only sweetened with dates. This breakfast is packed with fibre from the oats and dates. The coconut gives ig a littke something special and different.

Ingredients:
2/3 cup rolled oats (I used @redtractorfoods)
2/3 cup almond milk + a little more to add at the end (I use @sogoodau)
2-3 dates, depending on personal preference.
~1 tsp dedicated coconut, also depends on personal taste preference.
Some almonds (I don’t know how many, it’s up to you)

Method:
Cook oats and dates in milk for around 10 minutes. This makes the dates melt yhriugh the protein instead of getting pieces.
Add a little water as need if it becomes too dry.
Turn of head
Stir in coconut, almond and a little almond milk. This makes it not as dry.
Serve and eat.

They will be more nutritious because they wouldn't have gone under large amounts of processing like bought packaged food has. High temperature and prolonged heat during processing destroys vitamins such as C & B and can cause some fat to become unstable.

Processing also refines the foods/ingredients which means that parts of ut is removed. Thus remove a whole lot of vitamins and minerals.

Packaged/processed food also used low quality ingredients to make it cheaper for you. 
Even making your own chocolate cake at home is healthier than bought. I does need to be sugar, dairy & gluten free to be healthier than bought.

I definitely can’t live without having sandwiches or rolls.  Ant there is nothing wrong with them. A lot of people think a healthy meal means no bread.

But a sandwich is actually a good balanced and nutritionally complete meal. Bread provides a good source of carbohydrates and contributes to 2/5-7 recommended serves of grains. Bread is also full of vitamins Bs which you need to replenish and restock every day. This is because B vitamins are water soluble so what is not used is excreted in your wee.

Vegetables you add to the sandwich like lettuce, tomato, cucumber, avocado, carrot, onion, capsicum etc. gives you a range of vitamins and minerals and fiber.

So a sandwich with a source of protein (eg chicken, egg, steak, tuna etc.) and veggies is a very healthy and complete meal.

Packaged/processed food also used low quality ingredients to make it cheaper for you. 
Even making your own chocolate cake at home is healthier than bought. I does need to be sugar, dairy & gluten free to be healthier than bought.

Scrambled eggs and avocado on toast.
This is so simple and quick to make. It is also kid friendly.
It got the healthy fats, antioxidants, fibre and vitamin E from the avocado, complex carbs and B vitamins from toast AND protein, vitamin D, iron, omega 3 and much more from the eggs.

Delicious & sweet. And it’s only sweetened with dates. This breakfast is packed with fibre from the oats and dates. The coconut gives ig a littke something special and different.

Ingredients:
2/3 cup rolled oats (I used @redtractorfoods)
2/3 cup almond milk + a little more to add at the end (I use @sogoodau)
2-3 dates, depending on personal preference.
~1 tsp dedicated coconut, also depends on personal taste preference.
Some almonds (I don’t know how many, it’s up to you)

Method:
Cook oats and dates in milk for around 10 minutes. This makes the dates melt yhriugh the protein instead of getting pieces.
Add a little water as need if it becomes too dry.
Turn of head
Stir in coconut, almond and a little almond milk. This makes it not as dry.
Serve and eat.

What I did:
Toasted 2 slices of bread in the toaster.
While it was toasting, I heated a pand with EVOO.
I added 2 eggs to the pan, a pinch of salt and scrambled with a spatula I don’t add milk or butter. I’ve never actually made scrambled eggs with that because my mum never did for us, so I guess I just stuck to what I know 😄. It still tastes great!) Constantly mixing until cooked.
Then I put the egg and avocado on the toast.

• has more resistant starch - takes longer to break down so it doesn’t give you a sugar spike, feeds your good gut bacteria • Less sweet
• Higher vitamin C

• Sweeter - because time has allowed the starch to be converted to simple sugars
• Easier to digest - less bloating and gas.

crissyskitchen HEALTHY CHOCOLATE BROWNIES!
Gluten free and with hidden veggies 😋.
Read till the end to see what nutrients and benefits these have 😁

Ingredients:
300g Sweet Potato roasted
1 can Cannellini Beans drained and rinsed (240g drained)
80g Buckwheat flour (You can blend @loving_earth buckinis to make this)
8 Dates (soaked in warm water for a few minutes to soften)
1 Egg
3 Tbs Cacao Powder
1/4 cup Olive Oil
1 tsp Vanilla
1/2 tsp bicarb soda
pinch Salt.
Chocolate for top
Extra honey, maple syrup or any sweetener if you like sweeter things.

Method:
1. Preheat oven at 160C fan forced. Line a brownie tin with baking paper (or alternatively grease the tin)
2. In a food processor, blend sweet potato, dates and beans until smooth.
3. Add remaining ingredients and blend until smooth batter forms.
4. Bake in oven for 30mins until it browns slightly.
5. Cool in tin  for 10 mins before turning onto a wire rack to cool.
6. Cut and enjoy 
Making your own cakes, treats & desserts, especially when they contain vegetables, have so mich more nutrients and benefits than store bought/commercially made (even if the don’t have hidden veggies).

Who can’t go past peanut butter and banana on toast? It’s one of my favourite breakfasts when I’m feeling lazy. It’s balanced with protein, helathy fats, carbs, fiber and micronutrients. crissyskitchen CARROT CAKE PANCAKES 😱. When you need to sneak in some veggies, this is a go to recipe. I always make these when I want to up my vegetable intake.

These are gluten free and dairy free.

This is what you need (serves 1):
1 egg
1 banana mashed
1/3 a 1/2 carrot grated (depends on size. I just eyeball it)
1 Tbs buckwheat flour or oat flour (just blend rolled oats)
Mixed spice

Method:

Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. Or you could use a blender and ad the grated carrot after.
Fry until you see tiny bubbles then flip.
Top with whatever toppings you like: nut butter, maple syrup, berries etc.
EAT!! 🥞 .

Expensive fancy “superfoods” and powders aren’t needed for you to be healthy of have a healthy diet. Yes, acai has many health benefits and is healthy (meaning it’s good for the body) but it is not necessary. Imagine trying to eat every single food that you were told was a “superfood” or “so good for you”. I wouldn’t be able to eat that much.

Yoghurt has probiotics which are little microbes or bacteria that create a healthy environment in you bowel and intestines. 
It’s also a good source of calcium, protein and healthy fats. 
My tips for buying a good yoghurt:

Choose one with no added sugar if possible. This means anything in the ingredients list that says ‘sugar’ or ‘syrups’ in it. Yoghurt has naturally occurring sugar from the milk (lactose) in it so don’t look for 0g on the nutrition panel. 
If not possible choose one with the least yoghurt.

When choosing a fruit flavour, make sure it has actual REAL fruit in it and it’s not just flavouring. You can find this on the ingredients list.

Choose no colours, flavours or preservatives.

Choose full fat (this is not necessary it’s what you prefer) because it will contain the fat soluble vitamins A, D & E and will help your body absorb them effectively.

This shows that you can't take advice from just anyone. Some advice is wrong and dangerous. 
There is no need to restrict any food group. 
As I'm studying to be a dietitian, I now know how many studies, trials, experiments, papers, reports, articles and meta-analysis goes into creating the healthy eating guidelines we all see. They weren't picked out of thin air.

crissyskitchen Salted Caramel Protein Balls!! SAVE THE POST FOR THE RECIPE 😋

These balls are a great pick me up snack and contain Carbs, Fats AND Protein. And only use natural ingredients.

Make about 12 balls.

Ingredients:
150g Medjool Dates (~10)
1Tbs Tahini
1 tsp Chia Seeds (optional)
2Tbs Protein Powder (I use unflavoured pea protein)
1/2 tsp Sea Salt

Method:
1. Blend all ingredients together in a blender or food processor untill combined.
2. Roll mixture into balls using the palm of you hand. You can make them as big as you like.
OPTIONAL: Roll the balls into coconut, cacao powder, oats, chia seeds, sesame seeds, crushed nuts etc.
3. Place in fridge to firm up.
Keep in fridge or freezer.

These balls do taste a bit like tahini so if you don't really like the taste of it add some maple syrup to taste.

It’s been such a long time since I’ve had yoghurt because I find it hard finding a good quality yoghurt. And this one didn’t disappoint 😄. I’m also lactose intolerant so I try to stay away from dairy in general. Yih want to know a fun fact about lactose and yoghurt?

Lactose intolerant people can actually handle most yoghurts. This is because the probiotics (good bacteria) in yoghurt breaks down the lactose during production process. So you’re body doesn’t have to deal with it and leaves your tummy and gut happy 😊.

Fresh fruit and nuts are a great snack, simple and healthy. Why? Because they are a whole food - unprocessed and in their natural form so you get the most benefit from them. Full of nutrients, balanced , filling  and satisfying. The closer the food is to its whole form, the more nutrients it contains. Eating nuts with fruit reduces a sugar spike after eating because the fat, in the nuts,  takes longer to digest and absorb. This means the sugar is released into your blood slower and will give you longer lasting energy and fullness. So your blood glucose won’t dramatically increase. This is a good thing for diabetics or insulin resistance. 
Of course you can eat fruit by itself. The fibre in fruit slows down digestion and absorbtion of the sugar as well.

crissyskitchen How to make porridge/oatmeal taste nice while still keeping it healthy?

I remember hating porridge when I was you (even when I was a bit older 😆) because it was so bland, had no flavour and I didn’t know how you were supposed to eat it. I just had it with milk and a little honey or cinnamon. 
I will admit that sometimes now I can’t eat porridge if it doesn’t have enough things (that give flavour) in it.

My first tip is to add fruit and not a sprinkle, enough so you can taste it with every mouthful. When I add berries to mine I make sure there’s enough so I get at least 2 with every mouthful.

Add mashed banana and stir it through at the end. This is literally the best thing I’ve done. It disperses the banana flavour throughout the porridge. Add cinnamon and it tastes like banana bread 😋

Disperse the flavour throughout the porridge. Whether it is nut butter, fruit of chocolate. 
If dispersing fruit, try puréeing or mashing it up first. 
Also, try making my healthy chocolate milk (link in bio) as milk when making porridge. The chocolate flavour is throughout. 
Healthy chocolate porridge is the best (and yummiest) way to eat porridge. It is my go to porridge flavour ALL THE TIME!!

There is nothing wrong with bread and it’s a good source of carbs. Don’t worry about trying to find wholemeal, wholegrain bread. These do provide extra fiber and protein but it’s not necessary. Choose a bread with minimal ingredients possible. Traditional bread is made with just flour, yeast, water and salt. I try to stay away from ingredients with number and preservatives. - 🥪 Protein source. This is important to keep you satisfied and turns it into a meal rather than a snack. This can be chicken, steak (beef, lamb, pork, turkey), cheese, egg, fish, veggie burger, mince burger, tuna, salmon, sardines. - 🥪Fresh vegetables. These are the salads like lettuce, cucumber, tomato, carrot, spinach, onion, capsicum. These add vitamins and minerals (micronutrients), phytonutrients, fiber and water. - 🥪 Fancy extras (optional). These are things like avocado, hummus, pesto, grilled sweet potato, olives etc. These add flavour and make the sandwich a bit fancier. Who said a certain food can’t be eaten for breakfast? Food is food. And really what is a perfect meal or diet?

You don’t ned to eat “perfectly” all the time! I definitely don’t and not every Dietitian or Nutritionist does. We can get caught up on Instagram seeing all these health influences with the perfect diet, but in reality it’s not like that.

It’s ok to think your meal isn’t PERFECT. For me I focus on making my meals micronutrient dense but it doesn’t mean this is perfect. We live in a world where there are so many different types of food.

Also try and avoid anything deep fried because this high heat destroys lots of nutrients and the oil the fry in very bad for your health. It is constantly heated and they use cheap low quality oil. They more it is heated, the more unstable the fats becomes and can go rancid. Choose something that would be mostly prepared on the spot because then you know it's fresh and they haven't used packaged things. Try not to buy something premade like muffins and pastries. These won’t be very nutrient dense and won't keep you full. Lastly, look for meals with veggies, but don't worry if you not a savoury breakfast person, I'm not either 😉. As a followup from yesterday's post, liver can be difficult for some people to eat. I only cook it one way and I absolutely love it this way.
What do I do? 
Salt it well. Salt makes everything taste good and bareable
I sprinkle LOTS of dried oregano and a little dried basil on one side.

I fry in olive oil on low heat.
I actually don't know the proper way to cook liver and how to tell if it's actually cooked through. I just fry it until no blood comes out when it's cut (or very little). This might actually mean its over cooked 😆but who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️. If you know please let me know in the coments.

Liver is the most potent source of Vitamin A. It contains Retinol which is the active form of Vitamin A and is used easily by the body.
Vitamin A good for fertility, growth and development, vision, healthy skin and strengthens the immune system.  It is required for the development and activation of your immune cells. Thus helping you fight of infections and diseases. Vitamin A also has a role in tear production #funfact .

Liver is a good source of Vitmain B2 (Riboflavin) and B12. This is important for growth and preventing anaemia.

Good source of Vitamin D which is important now that everyone is more sun consious and doesn't seem to get enough Vit D. Vit D is vital for bone health and growing and strengthening bones.

Liver is high in Folate which is essention for fertility and baby's development during pregnancy. it helps prevent Neural Tube Defects. It also helps prevent anaemia as it's involve in Red Blood Cell Production.

High in Iron and Zinc which helps iron deficiency especially in women, and help grow strong and healthy hair, skin and nails.

When buying liver I highly recomend buying organic because it would be higher in these nutrients. I love getting mine from @shiraleeorganicmeats .

Something as simple as nut butter on apple is good enough and very nutritious.

Nut butter (homemade or store bought is fine) is a great way to spice uo a plain old apple for a snack.

🥣 puffed rice
🥣 1 chopped Apple
🥣 almonds, walnuts & brazil nuts soaked
🥣 mixed spice
🥣 @australiasown like milk unsweetened.

Adding fresh fruit to your cereal boosts the nutritional value because it is full of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins C, B, Magnesium & phosphorus which plain grains and cereals lack due to high processing and heat. ALSO, it’s an easy way to get a serve of fruit in.
I love adding apple because it gives it a good crunch. Other fruits good for cereal include berries, pear, peaches, banana & figs.

This morning I tried something different breakfast. I switched up my homemade cereal combination 😜 . 🥣 puffed rice 🥣 1 chopped Apple 🥣 almonds, walnuts & brazil nuts soaked 🥣 mixed spice 🥣 @australiasown like milk unsweetened. Adding fresh fruit to your cereal boosts the nutritional value because it is full of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamins C, B, Magnesium & phosphorus which plain grains and cereals lack due to high processing and heat. ALSO, it’s an easy way to get a serve of fruit in. I love adding apple because it gives it a good crunch. Other fruits good for cereal include berries, pear, peaches, banana & figs. This is just a reminder that you don’t have to eat perfectly when on holidays or travelling. I certainly allowed myself to eat and enjoy the food.

My top tip though is to have at least 1 fruit, either with a meal (breakfast is easiest) or buy it as a snack, AND 1 vegetable. Having linch and dinner meals that are bought out makes it hard to consume veggies. I tried to choose something that had some sort of vegetable (doesn’t need to be a lot) or order a side salad/vegetables to go with it.

Enjoy and eat what you want because you don’t want to leave not trying a food you wanted that you won’t be able to get anywhere else.

crissyskitchen How to make your own cereal - HEALTHY, SIMPLE & EASY!

There are a lot of cereals out there and a lot of them aren’t the beat for you. The are loaded with sugar (a little bit is fine but a lot of brands go overboard), refined oils, preservatives and flavours. PLUS a lot of them don’t add in the nutrients lost during processing like Vitamin Bs and C. They also use poor quality ingredients beacause they’re cheap.

So here’s an easy way to build your own cereal thats fast, easy and customisable so you can eat what you feel like:

1. The base of the cereals-this os usiallh a grain. This can be puffed rice, buckinis (I love the ones from @loving_earth ), oats (raw or toasted), flakes (wheat, spelt, bran, rye, oat etc with no added sugar). 2. 1 fruit- adding 1 peice will increase the Vitamins, Minerals & fiber. And also make it taste deliscious. I live to use apple, banana, berries, peaches, nectarines, dates or dried fruit.

3. NUTS NUTS NUTS! I love adding this for crunch and flavour. It’s also important because they add healthy fats and protein to keep you full.

4. Spices- like cinnamon, nutmeg and mixed spice are great to add extra flavour.

5. Other additions (optional) - coconut, seeds, chia seeds, honey, cacao powder (for CHOCOLATE breakfast), cacao nibs.

6. Milk

You can literally change it up every day. I usually make one serve which is what I feel like that morning. 
I you don’t have time make it the night before or pre-make a batch and add your fresh fruit in the morning 😁

I really love this combo. The creaminess from the avocado makes a great dip/sauce like accompaniment for the potatoes. AND IT’S HEALTHY AND EASY!

It makes a great savoury snack.
Add an egg, tuna or chicken breast to turn it into a complete and balance BREAKFAST or LUNCH with some added protein.

It is great for growing kids who are always hungry because the starch for the potatoes together woth healthy fats from the avocado creates fullness and satiety in the stomach.

What to do:
1. Mash avocado with salt and lemon juice (optional)
2. Coat sweet potato chuncks in olive oil, salt & pepper, and roast.
3. Top sweet potatoes with avocado

Cereal is one thing everyone eats and for most poeple, it is the only type of breakfast they have. Especcially for kids, they only seem to like cereal for breakfast and it's quick (plus kids don't really don’t know how to cook yet). So if you're a person that eat cereal nearly every day because of time, or you just love it too much and don't want to give it up, I have some tips on how to choose a healthy cereal.

1. Look for ADDED NUTRIENTS such as iron, vitamin C, Cacium, thiamine, folate etc. You can find this by looking at the nutritional pannel. Due to high processing of cereal most the nutrients are lost so it's important to get them back in. You want to be eating food with benefits. 
2. Fiber >2g per serve. This will help you keep full and regular on the toilet.

3. Sugar <15g/100g if there is NO fruit in it. Fruit cintains natural sugar which is not added by the manufacturer. This can be seen on nutritional pannel.

4. Choose cereal wwith fruit and nuts. The more whole foods and nutrients, the better.

5. If there is an ingredient you don't know or can't pronounce, don't but it. This is my no.1 rule whenever I buy someting packaged. Why put something in your body if you don't know what it is?

6. 0 TRANS FAT. This stuff is deadly. It has been linked to cancer, Cardio Vascular Disease, atherosclerosis, and poor heart health. .

crissyskitchen Mum's homemade marinated olives. This is what I love about being Italian.
Who else loves olives? You either love then or hate them.

Olives are a nutrient packed vegetable that has many benefits for your health, skin and hair.

They are full of Vitamin E which is an antioxidant whcih helps reduce free radicals in your body (the thing sthat cause cancer). Vitamin E is also anti-aging because it nourishes and moisturises the ody inside and out. That's why it's put in face creams and moisturisers. Vitamin E can also get rid of scars when used externally. Vitamin E also improves immune system

They are anti-inflammatory which can help with illness and arthritis.

Good for the HEART. Olives are full of monounsaturated fat (the good type) which has been prpoved to prevent heart disease by decrease LDL cholesterol.

Low calorie and satisfying snack which is great for people trying to loose weight. The fat content in the gives high satiety so you won't eat a whole bowl (but sometimes they're so nice I can't resist) and won't be hungry 1-2 hours later.

Mum's homemade marinated olives. This is what I love about being Italian. Who else loves olives? You either love then or hate them. Olives are a nutrient packed vegetable that has many benefits for your health, skin and hair. They are full of Vitamin E which is an antioxidant whcih helps reduce free radicals in your body (the thing sthat cause cancer). Vitamin E is also anti-aging because it nourishes and moisturises the ody inside and out. That's why it's put in face creams and moisturisers. Vitamin E can also get rid of scars when used externally. Vitamin E also improves immune system They are anti-inflammatory which can help with illness and arthritis. Good for the HEART. Olives are full of monounsaturated fat (the good type) which has been prpoved to prevent heart disease by decrease LDL cholesterol. Low calorie and satisfying snack which is great for people trying to loose weight. The fat content in the gives high satiety so you won't eat a whole bowl (but sometimes they're so nice I can't resist) and won't be hungry 1-2 hours later. crissyskitchen Uni exams are finally done 🥳 so I celebrated with a trip to @wearenutie at Surry Hills.

They are the best place in Sydney for Gluten free, dairy free and vegan donuts and desserts.

I had a try on the cookies & cream donut and reeses pieces mousse cake. THEY WERE SO DAMN GOOD. 
The reeses mousse cake is so decadent and not too sweet because it has a hint of salt (to break through the sweetness). I would highly recommend. It is also very filling.

Uni exams are finally done 🥳 so I celebrated with a trip to @wearenutie at Surry Hills. They are the best place in Sydney for Gluten free, dairy free and vegan donuts and desserts. Start with some good quality bread. One that you love the flavour and texture of.

Add a scource of protein eg. Eggs, chicken, turkey, steak, tuna, sardines etc.

Add lots of veggies.

My trick to making a sandwich taste so good is OLIVES!!! 😱
Also sprinkling oregano in the roll/sandwich gives such a good flavour.

Here I had focaccia bread (from @colessupermarkets ) with a fried egg (kinda scrambled), avocado, tomato and Mum’s marinated olives #italianlife #italianparents.
