betterhabits Are You Solely Focused On A Number On The Scale?

When it comes to coaching, the most common goal I hear is some number based around a scale - either I want to lose x number of pounds or I want to weigh x pounds.

For anyone with a goal like that let me ask you a few questions.

What happens if you reach that scale-based goal and your life is exactly the same?

What happens if you lose, say 15 pounds, and you realize you don’t look the way you thought you’d look after losing the weight?

How do you *know* your life will be different when you reach that number-based goal?

What if you shifted your mindset to be more about how you feel?

Instead of focusing on if you lost another pound what if you thought:

Wow, I have a lot more energy today

Hey! I just lifted more weight than I ever have before

I just ate a slice of pizza and drank a beer and didn’t feel guilty thinking it ruined all semblance of progress

I no longer need to take medication to help me fall asleep

There’s way more to this fitness and nutrition thing than a number on a scale.

There’s so much more to you than a number on a scale.

So why is it that I can’t stick to them, the new new/good habits, if I know it makes me feel so damn good? I could come up with bunch of excuses to justify myself, but I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to finally prove it to MYSELF that I’m stronger than any excuse  out there.

Currently I have a list of 10 daily habits I’d like to implement. Some of them are very simple, like washing my face every night before going to bed, and some are more challenging, like sticking to intermittent fasting to better my relationship with food, loose the unnecessary weight and sharpen my focus. I understand that trying to do them all at once will not work, so today I want to start with ONE that I will track and stick with it at least for 30 days until starting to “work” on another.

My chiro told me yesterday straight up that I’m gonna have to do better when I told him about my dissatisfaction with my habits & stretched out postpartum belly. I’ve admittedly hit the laziest points ever lately & my guess is because like many, I want the instant gratification. Fortunately, I’m fully aware of what hard work is & I’m not giving up on myself just yet. I’ll start over a million times before I let myself go completely. Just got a message from a client to say that she hasn't smoked marijuana since the end of May (when she had her session with me). She used to smoke every night after dinner, it was "her evening glass of red wine" but now she just doesn't feel like it and made the decision to stop, just like that. Same with evening junk food. Now she just has a piece of fruit. Funny thing is, she didn't come to me for help with kicking a marijuana habit. She came for premenstrual mood issues. betterhabits I love that eating healthy / keto is becoming more ingrained in my every day life and less of an effort. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Don’t get me wrong - the last week between school holidays and being sick I’ve indulged in some very non-keto friendly foods. BUT I’m eating more mindfully, I’m not stuffing my face just because, I’m saying no to some bad foods that I previously would have always accepted. I’m also making better choices - I had some Brussel sprouts in the fridge that I needed to use and some leftover bacon after cooking my stepson brekky. So I roasted the sprouts with some olive oil and garlic, chopped up the bacon and threw it in with some slivered almonds, a bit of haloumi and balsamic vinegar. All ready for a yummy lunch that I can take to work tomorrow. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I have to admit I have always loved the challenge of using random ingredients to make meals and minimise waste and I now mentally high give myself every time I turn it into a healthy meal!

Life has thrown a lot of challenges at me and somewhere along the way I lost my self-confidence, I got trapped into a comparison game, and ended up fighting depression. I’m doing a lot better now, but I’m still having the hardest time adapting certain new/better habits within my lifestyle. betterhabits Creamy (vego) carbonara - keto style! 
Stole this recipe from @no.meato.keto but had to tweak it based on what was in our pantry/fridge: we were out of Parmesan so I used a combination of grated cheddar with a bit of ricotta, I also added some minced garlic in with the onion. No spinach or slendier noodles so I made zoodles. Fried them up a tiny bit in coconut oil to soften them up before adding them in. 
SO. GOOD.

#1 I have been going to the swimming pool religiously every week since February. The result: starting from  not being able to put my head underwater, I am gradually becoming a decent swimmer. Rowling for having written the Harry Potter series and to my husband who was willing to discuss every little details of the books and movies with me during those couple of months I spent reading all 7 books. 😍

And how to make lifestyle changes a little at a time to become a #happierhealthierme . 
Time for AAA day 75/80. You guys!  this is a huge accomplishment for me. Even with the stumbling..which I know is important to learning....I am proud AF of myself for doing this for myself.

In the context of sports, tapering refers to the practice of reducing exercise in the days just before an important competition. ... This tapering means gradually reducing the exercise over a short period of time then stopping completely when leading up to competitions.

It’s like conserving energy for the big moment. I’ve used this before for speeches. Championship softball 🥎 games. The last time was when I ran the Kentucky festival mini marathon.
. 
I am currently tapering, now that I know what it means for my first Spartan Race this Saturday. A 3.9 mile course with 22 obstacles, and the high is showing 97 degrees. This week I’ve dialed down my running 🏃 and upper body 🏋️‍♀️ work outs. I’ve increased my water 💦 intake for hydration and my carb intake for energy. Starting today I’m sleeping in an hour longer. Getting my body ready for intense out of my comfort zone moments.

It will be a major mindset toughness battle.

I want to encourage you to get off the couch 🛋 and start making something happen in your life to change your destiny. Run after your dreams!!!!

👉Do I love myself?... I feel all self discipline stems from a place of self love. When you can love yourself enough to create that emotional trigger as to WHY you want something specific you tend to not view it as a punishment but as a means of practicing long term gratification. .

👉Am I implementing a routine everyday consistently? Everyday is the key word in that because a routine is not effective until it becomes consistent. Once you can create better habit loops you'll have a better way to combat any lulls or plateaus. .

👉Am I touching the line? ... This is 🏀 reference as I'm sure it could be used in all sports. However unless you've been around people that haven't, you don't really utilize the compounding habits of what that does. 😂 I remember running countless hours simply because someone forgot to bend down and touch a line due to the fatigue. .

Obviously you're not perfect, neither am I... But how disciplined are you? Some don't believe in discipline and honestly neither do I... But I do firmly believe in self love and the only way to really love myself fully is to also do the things necessary to always be sure I remain here as long as possible for the people that count on me!

Remembering to love your body for everything it does for us and accept positive change with open harms. BUT .
More importantly than anything at the moment for me, is creating better habits. Not binging on calorie dense foods. Not skipping meals. Not drinking my calories/macros. Understanding how my macros play a part in my fat loss and muscle gains. .

1) Dinner tonight ALMOST didn’t happen bc I was so tired and brain dead—credits have been SPENT. All I could think about was how I did not want to move much less clean up after cooking. 
2) All I had was chicken breast and no plan and I didn’t want to deal with chicken hands. 
3) But before I kept thinking about all the negatives, I just decided to go simple—cook the plain chicken breast, broccoli and rice. 
4) As the chicken cooked I realized I had left over marinade from the @j.oliveco cooking demo of coconut balsamic and coconut aminos! 
5) BAM 💥 at-home-better-than-takeout!

6) It all happened because I made a simple decision that lead to something great.

betterhabits Day 3 - The Habit Loop - How Habits Work (Derived from Atomic Habits by James Clear)

Almost every habit can be broken down into 4 core stages: 1) the cue 2) the craving 3) the response 4) the reward.

First - the CUE: cues trigger our brains to initiate certain behaviour. A cue is piece of information that predicts a reward which leads to second stage....the CRAVING.

CRAVINGS are the motivation behind every habit, in every habit there is a sense of desire. For example, most people aren't motivated by the act of brushing their teeth itself but rather the feeling and freshness of a clean mouth! That's the craving. 
The third stage is the RESPONSE which is the actual habit - thought or action you perform.

Day 3 - The Habit Loop - How Habits Work (Derived from Atomic Habits by James Clear) Almost every habit can be broken down into 4 core stages: 1) the cue 2) the craving 3) the response 4) the reward. First - the CUE: cues trigger our brains to initiate certain behaviour. A cue is piece of information that predicts a reward which leads to second stage....the CRAVING. CRAVINGS are the motivation behind every habit, in every habit there is a sense of desire. For example, most people aren't motivated by the act of brushing their teeth itself but rather the feeling and freshness of a clean mouth! That's the craving. Here's a little secret about nutrition coaches: . . Not a single one of us possesses more talent than you or some "special sauce" that keeps us healthy. . . We all just do little things day in and day out that add up, allowing us to eat healthy, maintain our ideal weight, and invest in rich, vibrant health (or as I like to call it...WELLth)! . . For example, the other night my husband and I didn't know what to eat for dinner. . . Option 1: order takeout that's filled with unknown oils, sugars, and additives. (Oh yeah, AND it's pricey!) . . Option 2: whip something up with what we had on hand. . . I'm sure it's no surprise by this un-glamorous picture, but we went with Option 2. . . I made rice, he diced up scallions, I threw leftover ground beef into the rice, we poured extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper, and seasonings all over it. Done and done. . . Now, this isn't to say that we NEVER order takeout. We definitely do! But MOST of the time we cook for ourselves because the food we make is healthier AND cheaper. . .  I have found for myself having a program with a calendar and a community of others doing the same program makes it easy to make a long term change. 
I am so excited to commit to this 100 days but not only the workouts. I have yet to commit 100% to my nutrition on a program and this is my commitment to myself during this program and into the future.
