I listened to another amazing mindbodygreen podcast featuring medical researcher and former heart surgeon, Dr Steven Gundry. It was so refreshing hearing a conventionally-trained doctor speak about the importance of gut health in creating and preventing disease. I am truly grateful for the fact that a doctor was actually acknowledging that diet has an impact on our health. At last it is slowly becoming more and more acceptable for doctors to talk about. More people need to know about the importance of our gut health.

The main pearls I took from Dr Gundry in this podcast were the following:
.

1️⃣Do not eat close to bed and once a week, try to leave 3-4 hours after eating your last meal before you go to bed. REASON: When we are in ‘deep sleep’ our brain goes through a ‘brain-wash’ and therefore requires blood flow to the brain. However, if we eat late, our body is still digesting and so the blood flow remains in the digestive system. Therefore your brain does not get its required ‘brain-wash’ in order for your brain to function optimally.

2️⃣It’s never too late to heal your body. He emphasised how important it is to acknowledge this fact. He mentioned that 90% of the cells in our body recycle themselves every 3 months. Therefore if we change our diet and lifestyle in a positive way to suit our bodies, then diseased cells can be replaced by healthy cells.

3️⃣Reduce the amount of (or remove all) lectins from the diet (especially for those with autoimmune disease). Lectins can damage the gut lining and lead to ‘leaky gut’. Lectins can be found in foods which are thought to be healthy but are actually excluded from auto-immune diets. These are foods such as soy, wheat, peanuts, tomatoes and potatoes.

4️⃣Practice strategic fasting in order to give the gut time to heal.

5️⃣Olive oil is AMAZING FOR THE BRAIN and it is a memory-boosting food.

Here are my suggestions for improving the quality of sleep if you have a thyroid condition:

1️⃣Get as much natural light as possible during the day. Ideally, you’ll be outside within thirty minutes of waking up. Being in natural light cues your circadian rhythms that you're awake.
2️⃣Determine the number of hours of sleep you need—and then make sure you get them! Give yourself a couple of weekend days when you can sleep uninterrupted, without an alarm to wake you up. That’s how you’ll know how much sleep you need. Then count backward from the time you need to wake up to make sure you get the right amount of sleep.
3️⃣As far as you can, go to bed and wake up at the same times every day. Ideally, early to bed and early to rise is healthier for you than late and late— 10:00pm to 6:00am is probably optimal.
4️⃣Progress slowly through the evening with amber light. After sundown, you want to replace your bright white lights with amber bulbs or wear amber glasses to cue your body toward nighttime. I recommend getting the f.lux program for your computer — it’s free, and it will shift the color of your computer’s light from blue to orange as the sun goes down. Most smartphones and iPads now have a night-shift setting that will change the lighting on your device to an amber color based on the time of day.
5️⃣Keep your sleep space as dark as possible. Your body needs to believe that it is surrounded by complete darkness to enter into the deepest, most restful sleep. You especially want to block out the blue light emitted by electronic screens and many types of lightbulbs, as these mimic most closely the effects of daylight, altering your circadian clock. Sleep masks and blackout curtains are beneficial.
6️⃣Sleep cold, not warm. Your body temperature needs to drop to maintain a healthy circadian rhythm.
7️⃣At least one hour before bed, turn off all screens: phone, computer, television. 
8️⃣keep electronics out of the bedroom to minimize your exposure to the electromagnetic fields (EMFs) that they emit.

Being in natural light cues your circadian rhythms that you're awake. 2️⃣Determine the number of hours of sleep you need—and then make sure you get them! Then count backward from the time you need to wake up to make sure you get the right amount of sleep. 3️⃣As far as you can, go to bed and wake up at the same times every day. Dealing with fatigue for an extended amount of time can make your world very small. It's all you can do to just survive. You lose sight of who you are without the fog and fatigue.  It can impact your self-esteem and your confidence. It feels heavy.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I wish I had prioritized my list differently and made time spent with my closest girlfriends a non-negotiable. I wouldn't of had to work so hard to remember who I was in addition to figuring out all the diet and lifestyle factors that I needed to dial in to feel better. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Time with friends needs to be a non-negotiable. You need to remember who you are working to become again. Your girlfriends are the ones with the reminders.

autoimmunehealing Hi friends💘 I hope everyone is staying strong. Sorry to have been so MIA. sometimes it’s not fun to come onto this world of chronic illness. sometimes it’s better for me to pretend I’m not. but I also feel blessed to have this community and the access to not feel alone. 
Update: I’m on a different new medication now. Has anyone tried #mestinon for #potssyndrome ? 
It’s been about a week on full dose and nothing has drastically changed. I hate the thought of filling my body with different medications 😖 especially when I don’t feel better. 
But the other day I heard my dad talking with my grandpa about how he used to only see me a few times a day when I would go to the bathroom and now he sees me more. And it’s true. Most days I can walk to the bathroom without being out of breath and without seeing my heart palpitations through my shirt. A few times a week I can cut up vegetables for dinner. That is amazing! I have prayed for these days! I didn’t even realize my improvement because I am still bed bound and can’t sit up much more than 10 minutes. But I can walk to the bathroom! I don’t have to spend most days laying with my eyes closed. Wow! I have been taking these days for granted. Be thankful for this moment right now!! We are all so strong! 💘

I had another #hashimotos win yesterday.  Stepping down my meds has made no impact on my thyroid levels, so we are stepping them down again, to the lowest level.  Could it really be that after 7 years of this diagnosis I may never need to take a daily med again??? That would be incredible.  Healing through diet and exercise changes is possible.  I’m proof positive of that!

autoimmunehealing 4:30am and I already have 3K+ steps... as if my lack of sleep from this congestion wasn’t bad enough, the baby decides that he doesn’t want to sleep tonight. Was up with him from 11-12am and from 2-4:30am. Hopefully he’ll sleep until my alarm goes off in an hour and a half (so I can get the bigger two up and ready for school). There go all my spoons for today... Counting down the hours until daddy gets home.

Let’s get personal for a hot second.

I haven’t slept through the night in over two years.
•
I can’t wake up in the morning and go for a comfortable run, workout, or yoga class.
•
It takes me a solid 5-10 minutes to stand upright upon awakening.
•
I’ve been steadily losing spinal mobility and gaining pain.
•
Some of you may remember the 6+ month skin flare up as well.
•
I went to my PCP then. You know what he told me? You probably just have back pain and eczema. And sent me for a blood test and x-ray.
•
Background: I also have a positive ANA (autoimmune marker) and a long family history of autoimmune disorders - as well as a personal history of unexplained stress fractures (remember those?). So no surprise when the blood test and X-ray came back normal 🤦🏻‍♀️. No I don’t just have back pain and eczema. More likely, I have psoriatic arthritis - an inflammatory, autoimmune disorder (which that same PCP called me back a month or so later - after I filed a complaint with his office about his treatment of my case - and told me he decided I had after taking a “second look” at my file).
•
Why am I sharing this now? Because I don’t believe this chronic condition is untreatable, I don’t believe I need pharmaceuticals, and I know IN MY GUT that it has to do WITH MY GUT (and my hormones and my diet). So I decided it was time to invest in myself, for myself, and learn about myself. I have no desire to study or learn about the gut, gut bacteria, food sensitivities, genetic predispositions, etc.
•
So I outsourced, like any smart person would do. I also know enough about myself that I need guidance and instruction to follow and that I need data to change my diet (hello, I ❤️ 🧀 and 🍞). And truth? I’m really excited to shit in a cup and to start the healing process from there. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Want to learn more? autoimmunehealing I like CBD oil/the occasional joint but don’t like vaping. Next best thing are these smokes from the States...but Australia you are so behind the 8 ball. People like my Mum who’s suffered from Parkinson’s for 14 years and myself who has chronic inflammation from autoimmune could benefit from not having to go behind the Government’s back like a school kid to get the natural relief we need, without having to go through 3 different sources to obtain it. One of little mans favorite meals is Chinese Stir Fry. So tonight after he finished doing his stuff for school I had him help me make it.

He learned how to cut carrots up julienne, thinly slice bell peppers and how to make a slurry with cornstarch to thicken a sauce. Getting those carrots cut were by far the biggest challenge but he did great!

If you struggle to get your kids to cook, have them help you make one of their favorites. “That way they know how to make it themselves for the future.”😁 It really works.

• 2 cups salted pork cracklings (unflavored for AIP)

Two years ago I remember being pretty shaken up by the numbers creeping their way up on my scale (and yes, the picture on the left is slightly exaggerating, those goggles 🤣🤣). I found myself tearing up as I told my doctor I had no idea why I suddenly packed on 15 pounds in only a few years. As a person who was constantly striving to be healthier and more fit, I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t gain control of my body. The diagnosis of #hashimotosdisease and #hypothyroidism sure didn’t help me either. Constantly tired, I couldn’t work out nearly as much as I had in the past and my motivation was at an all time low. With the help of getting my hormone levels regulated and big kick in the butt motivator (*cough* #wedding) I was able to regain control of my body again with the help of calorie counting in #loseitapp and pure, good old fashioned workouts. My hormone levels are finally stabilized and I feel as good as I did before my diagnosis. If you're focused on the pain, it's going to make it a million times worse. Use distraction to get your mind off of it. When I was healing and still struggling with chronic pain I would play the memory skill game 'Simon'. It took all my concentration to play it, and whenever I did, the pain would quickly start to fade.

Even if you are able to get your antibodies to drop significantly or disappear, you could relapse or your antibodies could increase and symptoms reoccur. This is why autoimmune disease is a journey. Reducing triggers, following a thyroid specific diet, and working to reduce antibody load should be a serious priority in regards to maintaining your thyroid health. This also includes reducing your stress.⠀

If you are just given synthetic thyroid hormones to take, they are NOT STOPPING THE AUTOIMMUNE PROBLEM. As the thyroid gets attacked you can suffer from periods of HYPERthyroidism because it spills out thyroid hormones into the body. This is why many of us get anxiety and heart palpitations. It is so important to address the autoimmune side. Unfortunately doctors aren’t going to do that for you so you need to be your own health advocate. I would advise seeing a functional medicine practitioner, a naturopath or a nutritionist. Please don’t allow yourself to suffer because your doctor was ignorant to the thyroid 🙏🙏

STRESS is #1 - the hormones that are overproduced in chronic stress turn on and increase the cytokines that drive the autoimmune process. Stress includes poor sleep, pain, over-exercising and emotional stress.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
INFECTIONS- such as chronic viruses like Epstein Barr, Herpes simplex 1 and 2 and even parasites can stimulate autoimmunity.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
GUT DYSBIOSIS -  AKA (imbalance of microbes in the gut) perpetuates inflammation and increases leaky gut syndrome.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Hoy quiero contarles sobre el trabajo y el Lupus + Dialisis. 
Obvio nadie quiere contratar una persona como yo y mucho menos cuando tienes que pedir tantos permisos para ir al hospital. 
Conseguir trabajo no es el problema el problema es que ya pasaste todos los filtros y al final te digan “nos encanto tu perfil pero estás sobrevalorada” ¿Sobre valorada??😡 Se perfectamente lo que quisieron decir con esas palabras... en fin. ¿Les a pasado?

Después de buscar y buscar encontré un lugar donde pensé que me sentiría como en casa, estaba contenta y hambrienta por aprender cosas nuevas, le eche muchas ganas (a veces sin haber podido dormir me levantaba para ir a trabajar). Haciendo lo que se hacer y cómo me lo enseñaron todo iba muy bien. Mientras iban pasando los días me di cuenta que me iban quitando responsabilidades (cosas que tenia que hacer en el puesto en el que estaba) hasta que me dejaron con 1 sola cuenta ¿porq? No entendía nada, yo entregaba como me decían y cumplía con el trabajo. 
Hasta me quede  sin nada..
Y el trabajo que tanto me ilusionaba se fue desvaneciendo. 
Es muy difícil competir con alguien que está 9 horas sentado en una silla a alguien que tiene que trabajar, ir a consultas, tomas de sangre, eritropoyetina (otro tema para platicarles), hospitales y obvio trabajo. 
Es por eso que decidí emprender y con una pequeña agencia de estrategias digitales para otros emprendedores. 
Trabajo desde casa y si tengo que salir todo está en mi cel, es la mejor forma que pude encontrar para salir adelante, si es más rudo porque todo depende de mi, pero por lo menos soy dueña de mi tiempo mi espacio y sobre todo estoy rodeada de buena vibra.

Before returning to DXB I was eating a mainly Gluten Free Diet, taking all my vitamins every night, drinking lots of water & regularly exercising (daily). Since returning to DXB I’ve let my gluten free diet slip, ran out of many of my vitamins & not re-stocked them on time & haven’t been exercising daily 😳 And I got sick! 
But more importantly it has taken me a lot longer to shake this sickness.
Last year I got a bout of flu (the worst I think I’ve ever felt) went to hospital to be put on a drip & 5 days later managed to ski down a mountain! 
HOW? Because I was 💯 % on top of my nutrition & exercise & so my body was more readily able to fight off the flu. 
If you have an AUTO IMMUNE disease, don’t just rely on prescription drugs to get you through life. Research what correct nutrition & exercise can do for your condition, because BELIEVE ME it really does make a huge difference. 
And why wouldn’t you do everything you can to help your body. 
But yes, I forgot all of this, being caught up in the throws of life & now I’m paying for it. 
BUT I did a huge vitamin order yesterday (thank god for pharmacy deliveries) & I feel so much better today. 
CONSISTENCY IS KEY! You just can’t take time off from doing everything right. Yes it is a massive pain in the ass, but it’s totally worth it.

autoimmunehealing I haven’t posted in a couple weeks because I haven’t really had anything to post. I’ve been busy working and making money for some fun adventures I have coming up later this fall and this winter. I’ve also been working hard to eat well, manage my stress, get enough sleep, take my medications, go on forest hikes... all things that I think are contributing to the fact that I am generally feeling good. I haven’t posted in a couple weeks because I haven’t really had anything to post. I’ve been busy working and making money for some fun adventures I have coming up later this fall and this winter. I’ve also been working hard to eat well, manage my stress, get enough sleep, take my medications, go on forest hikes... all things that I think are contributing to the fact that I am generally feeling good. In the first I've been admitted to hospital, just been diagnosed with Lupus and waiting to find out how much damage had been done to my heart and kidneys. 
In the second, around three months later and taken today, I am on my way to catch a train into London for my first day back at work. 
I'm back home now, completely and utterly exhausted, but on top of the world!! 🌍 
Not that long ago this seemed like such an impossiblity, and yet today, here I am. It's been hard work, with many frustrations and setbacks along the way, but days like this are the reminders that no matter how dark and hopeless things may seem, there is light at the end of that tunnel. The world outside the tunnel might not be the same but that's ok. We adapt, we change, we grow, we learn. Days like these are the reminders of how far I've come, and give me so much hope for the rest of the way.

Now to celebrate with comfies and tea ☕ 🎉

autoimmunehealing Balancing this lifestyle and trying to heal my body with being a mother, is one of the harder things I’ve had to do. And it has me wondering at times whether or not I’m doing the right thing. Whether it would be easier and better for my family if I just have my thyroid removed? I spend a ridiculous amount of our money on food bills, supplements and treatments. I have to prioritise myself EVERYDAY to make sure that I stay on track. It’s never a matter of just packing the kids in the car and heading out for a fun filled activity day. We can’t leave the house until I have completed my morning routine and I have nutritious food packed for the day. The entire morning is generally about me. And as a mother, it kills me! And even if we do decide to eat out, my husband patiently waits as we try 3 different places to eat as they don’t serve food that matches my dietary requirements. My poor husband, has been so tolerant of the choices I have made. His patience never wears thin, even though I’m sure at times he just wants to yell “for God’s sake! Just eat what’s here!” I know I’m setting a great example for my kids in regards to a healthy lifestyle and approaching illness in a holistic way, but I can’t help but feel guilt because my family is suffering from the approach I have taken to my illness. 
I’m not striving for the end because I want to be healed... I’m striving because I want to bring my attention and focus back to my family.

Off days just light walking and tai chi.
I plan on finding a place to do 30 minuets or so of boxing/kickboxing one time a week.
I’ve noticed tremendous changes in last few weeks after several gallbladder attacks lead me to a fast of Apple cider vinegar with apple juice (watered down, teas, apples, juices celery and apples with psyllium husk/bentonite Clay /marshmallow root mix, taking milk thistle and castor oil along with detox bath and castor oil packs! .
One week or so of this lead to a huge change in my body composition, then being more strict about a paleo/bulletproof and adding MCT oil to my coffee........my weight dropped ten pounds and my pants size went from nine to six!!!! 😱🤗

10 years ago today I reached a Milestone in my Wellness journey. I crossed the 130lbs threshold into the 120’s for the first time since College.

Those college years were where my low quality nutrition and complete lack of knowledge on what to eat caught up to me. I lived on convenience foods, fast food and since I was in culinary school the food & pastries we made I ate. The freshman 15 looked more like the freshman 20+ for me, and didn’t stop from there.

So to see 120’s after being up close to 200 it was achieving a level of success I hadn’t seen in far too long. Truth be told 10 years ago I had it in my head I wanted to reach 115lbs so I was still on my “weight loss” part of my journey. But little did I know where I would find my happy place wasn’t going to be at ??? weight. It was going to be when I transformed the way I saw myself. Who I saw myself as.

Since today 10 years ago I’ve seen more physical transformation, but massive shifts mentally and emotionally that I never would have thought possible. Changes that effected way more than my clothing size. They redirected the course of not only my future but my families too.

So while I’m celebrating my 10 year anniversary of reaching the 120’s my true celebration is in my consistency to remain on the journey. Celebrating how my pursuit has impacted my families wellness, my husband and boys. How’s its trickled into my extended family. Along with the opportunity it’s given me to help others not only transform their lives but those around them.

𝐇𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐲 𝟏𝟎 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐌𝐄! 10 years ago today I reached a Milestone in my Wellness journey. I crossed the 130lbs threshold into the 120’s for the first time since College. Those college years were where my low quality nutrition and complete lack of knowledge on what to eat caught up to me. I lived on convenience foods, fast food and since I was in culinary school the food & pastries we made I ate. The freshman 15 looked more like the freshman 20+ for me, and didn’t stop from there. So to see 120’s after being up close to 200 it was achieving a level of success I hadn’t seen in far too long. Truth be told 10 years ago I had it in my head I wanted to reach 115lbs so I was still on my “weight loss” part of my journey. But little did I know where I would find my happy place wasn’t going to be at ??? weight. It was going to be when I transformed the way I saw myself. Who I saw myself as.
