Know The Different Types Of Loose Diamond Shapes

The price of a diamond is determined by the 4Cs. However, the shape plays a very important role in this as well. There are many variants of loose diamonds available including round brilliant, pear, heart, Asscher, marquise, princess and more. Loose diamonds are classified into different grades depending on the 4Cs, color, clarity, cut and carat. The price varies from shape to shape, even if the diamonds are graded equally. Let's learn about some of the popular shapes.

Round Diamonds: This is the most popular diamond shape in the world and used in most of the engagement rings. This cut requires a four pronged setting. The crown is the top surface of the diamond, the middle portion is girdle and the base of a diamond is called pavilion. There are 58 facets in this cut and it is known for their brilliance and shine.

Marquise Diamonds: The cut was inspired by Marquise de Pompadour's smile and has an elongated oval shape with tapered ends. These diamonds are very costly and look great on cocktail rings or necklaces.

Pear Shaped Diamonds: Pear shaped diamonds are also called teardrop diamonds due to the shape. This is a hybrid of marquise and round cut. This can be worn pointing upwards or inverted, as per your preference. When it is worn inverted, with the pointed end facing the finger, it gives a slimming look.

Heart Shaped Diamonds: The best choice for any romantic person is this. This is technically a pear shaped diamond with a cleft cut on the crown to give it the look of heart. On bracelets, rings and pendants, these stones look absolutely stunning. When you buy it online, the important consideration would be the length to width ratio. While the permissible ratio varies from 0.75 to 1.25, the best effect is achieved when the ratio is within 0.9 to 1.1.

Emerald Cut Diamonds: This is a rectangular cut with cropped corners. Thus, it has long unbroken lines which flash brightly. This cut was originally for emeralds but later it was imported to diamonds as well.

Princess Cut Diamonds: Princess cut is the youngest cut in the market and was invented only in the 1960s. This is a hybrid between round brilliant cut and square cut. Often called modified square brilliant, for the obvious reason, the four corners of this diamond need to be protected as they are prone to dents and chips. These diamonds are often used in rings, earrings and pendants.
