Matcha literally means “powdered tea” and Matcha green tea is a special type of green tea. Normal green tea contains tea leaves that are steeped in hot water and then these leaves are strained and discarded. But in case of matcha, it is powdered and what you drink is a solution made from powdered tea leaves.


How is matcha green tea prepared?

The tea is made by adding a teaspoon of matcha powder to about one-fourth cup of hot water (heated to less than a boil). Whisk the mixture with a bamboo brush until it froths, or mix it with a spoon. Add more hot water to paste to adjust to your taste.

Unlike other teas which require sugar, milk or lemon to make them taste good, Matcha tastes amazing all by itself without any additives.


Health benefits of matcha green tea

The unique thing about matcha green tea is that the entire leaves are dissolved in water and not steeped in bags or as tea leaves. As the leaves are not thrown away, the body actually gets the entire amount of antioxidants contained in the leaves. The chemical compounds contained in the matcha show activity against heart disease, cancer, blood sugar, blood pressure, and anti-aging.

Matcha contains antioxidants called catechins which are known to neutralize the dangerous free radicals in the body. Another catechin found in the tea, EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), has been known to boost metabolism, and also slowdown the growth of cancer cells.

Matcha green tea is popularly consumed in Japan owing to its ability to combat inflammation, oxidation and aging.

Research has proved that drinking Matcha is associated with increase in metabolism. As it increases metabolism, it helps burn the body fat about four times faster than average. And being herbal, it has no side-effects such as increased heart rate and high blood pressure.

Matcha is also a powerful detoxifier that is proved to remove heavy metals and chemical toxins from the body, thus detoxifying the body.
