Just One Drink Too Many? Information You Need to Know About Driving Under the Influence

Drinking and driving is never a good idea. There is, however, often a sentiment that just having a drink or two won't impair one's ability to operate on the road. Before you take that next drink, though, you should take a moment to really think about the consequences of driving under the influence.

It’s a Real Crime

First and foremost, you must realize that drinking and driving is a crime in every state. While the penalties for a first offense or for being caught without harming someone may not be as dire as those for causing actual harm, being pulled over with a high blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is still a crime.

To help your case and reduce your penalties, you will need a criminal defense lawyer. Drinking and driving is an issue that can get you in very real trouble with the law, so it is something that you are much better off not risking in the first place. However, if you have made a mistake, a lawyer can often help greatly reduce the penalty, especially for a first offense.

Impairment Isn't What You Think

The idea of what impaired driving means is often hard to grasp, especially when you have been drinking. You may well have all of your wits about you when you are over the limit, but that doesn't mean that you have the ability to drive as well as you would when sober. Drinking can slow your reaction times, which in turn can cause significant harm to your ability to deal with changing circumstances on the road. Some of the most dangerous drivers on the road are the same people who believe that they are perfectly capable of driving.

The Consequences Aren't All Legal

When many people think about the consequences of drinking and driving, they think about the possibility of going to jail. In reality, some of the most difficult issues to deal with have nothing to do with the law. If you are in a licensed profession, for example, you could lose your license to do your job if you are found guilty. Likewise, you may find it hard to get a new job once you have the DWI or DUI felony on your record. These consequences are minor, though, when you think about what might happen if you injure or kill someone while you are under the influence.

You May Not Know You’re Over the Limit

It's also important to remember that how you feel may have very little to do with your blood alcohol content. Your BAC has more to do with your weight and the alcohol content of what you have had to drink than it does with your ability to function. Therefore, you likely will not know exactly when you go over the legal BAC. More important, though, is the fact that you may not know when your next drink is one drink too many—and the consequences for mismanagement can be dire.

Never drink and drive. Not only can you end up hurting others, but you can also end up doing significant damage to your own life. If you are going to drink, make sure that you don't have to rely on your own judgement about when to cut yourself off. Arrange a ride so that everyone on the road can get home safely.
