Ways to approach Physical Chemistry for JEE Mains you probably never knew

By Akshara

Among the three sections of the JEE, chemistry is possibly the least preferred. However, it is also the most scoring. With some practice most of the questions can be cracked easily. Therefore, if you are starting your JEE Main preparation, never neglect Chemistry, especially Physical Chemistry because it is a sub section of Chemistry that can fetch you high marks. Mistakes done in Organic Chemistry can be offset with the help of solving problems in Physical Chemistry.

As you can see, topics like atomic structure and nuclear chemistry are common and are scoring. Chapters like ionic equilibrium and thermodynamics are tested regularly in a fair way.

  • Preparation

The main thing required to score high in Physical Chemistry is practice. You should practice problems daily until your concepts are clear. Towards the later stage of JEE Main preparation, you should focus more on chapters like Thermodynamics and Thermochemistry as it has more marks when compared to other chapters.

Another thing we can find out from the above mentioned table is that in this section, you cannot any single chapter. A single loss of mark means a precipitous drop in the JEE Rank. While practicing previous year JEE Main question papers note the important formulas and memorize it every day. Along with the formulas, you should write the names as well as the values of the different constants and keep on repeating the above step.

Most of the students have a misconception that all the problems in Physical Chemistry can be solved simply by applying formula. This result in disaster as without understanding the concepts and theories, formula can be applied incorrectly. So, it is advised to understand the theory rather than memorizing them.

There are students who are unable to perform calculations perfectly within a short period of time. In such case, students can join JEE Main classes to overcome this problem. In these classes, students are taught to solve problems without using calculators and log books.

  • Reference material

Students should try to solve problems mentioned in the reference books. Along with this, one should also go through the books provided by the coaching institute. These steps will help students build a strong foundation in Physical Chemistry. Another very significant resource for JEE Mains preparation is NCERT Chemistry textbook. Every year, many questions from NCERT books are asked in the examination.

Towards the end of your preparation, make a note of those topics in which you are weak and keep on practicing them again and again. See if you are improving. Always remember that however vital Physical Chemistry is, it is only one wheel in a vehicle. Focus equally on other chapters too.
