5 Things Adults Should Know About Cavity Prevention

5 Things Adults Should Know About Cavity Prevention

Most of us, ever since we were young, learned the importance of daily brushing and flossing our teeth (and hopefully using mouthwash as well). But even adults can sometimes misunderstand things about their oral health and hygiene. And one often misunderstood aspect of dental care is cavity prevention. Cavity prevention is one of the primary goals of your oral hygiene routine. As an adult, your risk of getting cavities goes up as you age. Years of exposure to acidic foods and drinks eventually takes its toll, but you don’t have to accept having a mouth full of fillings. As an adult, it can be harder to maintain your health in general, but there are plenty of things you can do to prevent cavities. These five things are essential for every adult to know in order to keep their teeth cavity-free.

You Could Be Brushing Wrong

First, you should know that even if you started young, your method of brushing your teeth could be incorrect and causing problems for your oral health. Most people think that brushing harder is better, but this is not necessarily true. Brushing too hard can remove the top layer of your tooth enamel. This weakened area of your tooth is more susceptible to developing cavities. Ask your dentist to show you how to use the right amount of pressure to remove plaque without damaging your teeth. You may need to take some time to practice holding your brush and using the right pressure. In addition, your angle also matters. It’s a good idea to ensure you are brushing the tops of your teeth, next to the gums, at about a 45 degree angle to keep them clean where they connect to your mouth.

You May Need More Frequent Dental Treatments

Growing up, you might have only needed to visit the dentist once or twice a year. Now, however, you may need to go for more frequent exams and cleanings. This helps your dentist to identify cavities early so that you get prompt treatment. At dental providers like Airport Road Dental Associates, you can also receive teeth cleanings that remove the tartar that you can’t always reach with your toothbrush. This further reduces your risk of developing cavities.

Your Diet Can Affect Your Teeth

Everything that you put in your mouth has an impact on your teeth. A diet that is high in starchy foods can create conditions in your mouth that lead to cavities. Wine, soda and other acidic drinks can also erode enamel and make it more likely that you’ll develop tooth decay.

You Need to Floss Every Day

Flossing is often viewed as an afterthought, and you may just do it to remove food that gets stuck between two teeth. While you can always use floss to remove an unsightly piece of spinach, you should be flossing between all of your teeth at least once a day. Find a dental floss type that works best for you, or consider trying a water flosser. Either way, removing the food debris that your brush leaves behind prevents cavities that develop between your teeth.

You Can Still Strengthen Your Enamel

You don’t have to lose hope on having healthy teeth just because you’ve reached adulthood. Special fluoride treatments can still help to strengthen your dental enamel. In some cases, dental bonding can also be used to reinforce weakened parts of your teeth that are susceptible to decay.

By the time you reach adulthood, you’ve likely had at least one cavity. Now, you can avoid getting more. Making your teeth a priority helps you to keep your beautiful smile for many more years to come.
