5 Biggest Myths and Facts about Cancer

The menace of cancer has been affecting mankind for centuries and the human body faces the onslaught of various kinds of cancers in different proportions. There is plenty of information available about cancer but the authenticity of this information is questionable.

Listed below are some of the misconceptions and myths about cancer

Some people believe that cancer is contagious. Certain types of cancers can be caused by bacteria and viruses that spread from person to person but generally cancer is not a contagious disease. In the case of organ or tissue transplant, a person who receives an organ or tissue from a donor who had cancer in the past may be at increased risk of developing transplant-related cancer in the future. However, that risk is extremely low and doctors avoid the use of organs or tissue from donors who have a history of cancer.

There is a misconception that a tumour biopsy causes cancer to spread in the body. Chances of cancer spreading to other parts of the body after biopsy are extremely low as surgeons follow standard procedures, and take special measures to prevent cancer cells from spreading during biopsies to remove tumours. While removing the tissue from more than one area of the body, they use different tools for each area.

Another popular myth is that cancer thrives on sugar. There is no conclusive evidence that proves eating sugar will make cancer grow and spread more quickly. Both healthy and cancerous cells depend on sugar to grow and function. Although research has shown that cancer cells consume more sugar than normal cells, there is no evidence that eating sugar will speed up the growth of cancer or that cutting out sugar completely will slow down its growth. Consuming too many calories from sugar has been linked to weight gain, obesity, and diabetes which increases the risk of developing cancer and other health problems.

There is a misconception that cell phones and high voltage power lines cause cancer. Cancer is caused by genetic mutations and cell phones emit a type of low-frequency energy that does not damage genes. Power lines emit both electric and magnetic energy. The electric energy emitted by power lines is easily shielded or weakened by walls and other objects. The magnetic energy emitted by power lines is a low-frequency form of radiation that does not damage genes.

Another myth that is wrongly interpreted is that family history can be a factor in causing or preventing cancer. Only about 05 to 10 percent of cancers are caused by harmful mutations that are inherited from a person’s parents. In families with an inherited cancer-causing mutation, multiple family members will often develop the same type of cancer. These cancers are called hereditary cancers. The remaining 90 to 95 percent of cancers are caused by mutations that happen during a person’s lifetime as a natural result of ageing and exposure to environmental factors. These cancers are called non-hereditary or spontaneous cancers.
