5 Things to Do if Your Mental Health is Suffering

Being in quarantine and adjusting work and school schedules has taken a toll on the mental health of many individuals. This is especially true for people who are already suffering from conditions like anxiety and depression. There are several practical things you can do to improve your mental health while staying safe and enriching your mind during what is an uncertain time for all of us.

Spending Time Outdoors

While you shouldn't go to many social events or places where large crowds gather, there are still safe ways to spend time outdoors and calm your body and mind. Whether you live in the NYC area and want to go glamping in New York or live in a smaller city and prefer to camp in the backyard, getting some fresh air can do wonders for your mental health. 

You can customize your camping trip by bringing along aromatherapy candles with scents like lavender or chamomile which are ideal for soothing the mind and promoting restful sleep. Spending time outdoors can also entail taking a walk after dinner or sitting in the backyard to read your favorite book or watch a show that makes you laugh. The sun provides you with vitamin D which helps boost your immune system and reduce anxiety so you may find that you feel a little better after just a few minutes outside.

Work Out

When you exercise, you'll release endorphins that will boost your mood. The right workout plan can also help you lose weight and reach your health goals which can improve your mental health. Working out can help you prevent certain health conditions as well such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, and obesity. 

In some cases, mental health conditions are associated with poor body image. When you see that your body is improving and you have more energy, you may be more equipped to handle bouts of anxiety or notice that your stress levels are significantly lower throughout your day.

Keep a Journal

It's important to be aware of your feelings even when you don't suffer from poor mental health. It may be helpful to keep a journal so you can express your feelings through writing especially when you feel anxious, scared, or angry. It's normal to have feelings of boredom and confusion due to self-isolation. 

However, when you safely express your feelings you can work through your emotions and understand why you feel the way you do. This can make you more aware of your emotions when they occur again and can deal with your feelings in a calm manner.

Eat Well

When you're trying to take control of your mental health, you should pay special attention to your diet. Foods that are high omega-3 fatty acids improve brain activity and can reduce depression, anxiety, and symptoms of bipolar disorder. These foods include fatty fish like salmon and tuna and nuts like pecans and walnuts. You can also consume foods that are rich in antioxidants like raw fruits and vegetables. 

A salad filled with spinach, tomatoes, bell peppers, and carrots is a tasty and delicious meal or side dish that contains antioxidants to shield the body from impurities. Antioxidants protect and restore the cells and slow the aging process. These nutrients are also good for your mental health. Be sure to fill your diet with citrus fruits, berries, and stone fruits like plums and peaches as well. These foods can give you vitamins and nutrients without excess calories and improve the function of the brain while helping you manage your weight.

Volunteer Your Time and Resources

Helping others is another effective way to boost your brain activity and improve symptoms of depression and anxiety. When you spend your time donating money to charities or relief efforts or giving clothing and shoes to local nonprofits organizations, you may find that you feel better mentally and emotionally. 

Taking time to help someone else in need can boost your mood and help you put your feelings in perspective. This is especially true during the pandemic. Everyone has been affected by this health crisis in some way and you're likely to feel a sense of relief and accomplishment when you help make someone else's life a little better.

These are a few things you can do to improve your mental health. If you feel you need prescription medication or refills, ask your physician or therapist about virtual appointments or consultations so you can get the medicine you need to feel your best.
