Five stages of chronic kidney disease

There are five stages of chronic kidney disease or chronic kidney failure. According to the guidelines from the National Kidney Foundation, each stage of kidney disease has different signs and symptoms corresponding to the severity of the stage.

When the doctor is able to figure out what stage of CKD you are in, it easy for the patient to take well care of their kidneys and adopt precautions accordingly.

Glomerular filtration rate

The stages of CKD are determined based on the glomerular filtration rate which is a measurement of the kidney function. It is a number calculated with a mathematical formula using the patient’s age, gender, and serum creatinine level. Creatinine is measured with the help of blood test and it checks how efficiently the kidneys are working. When the kidneys are not working well, serum creatinine level rises in the blood.

Now coming to GFR, the more the number, the higher is the kidney function. GFR of more than 90 ml/min is a sign that your kidneys are functioning well enough, but on the other hand, less than 15 ml/min is a sign of kidney failure and embarks the stage 5 of CKD.

Based on GFR, the five stages of CKD are as follow:

Stage 1 with normal or high GFR (GFR > 90 mL/min)
Stage 2 Mild CKD (GFR = 60-89 mL/min)
Stage 3A Moderate CKD (GFR = 30-59 mL/min)
Stage 4 Severe CKD (GFR = 15-29 mL/min)
Stage 5 End Stage CKD (GFR <15 mL/min)

The last stage of CKD also called end-stage renal disease is quite life-threatening and should be managed well with the help of the best kidney failure ayurvedic treatment in India. Ayurveda is a better option when it comes to curing chronic ailments of their roots.
