A Guide to the 5 Basic Car Repairs Every Driver Needs to Know

Many of us have been driving for years. However, there may be some fairly simple car repairs that you still don’t know how to do. Instead of wasting money taking your car to the mechanic for every little thing, you can learn to do these yourself. Here’s a guide to the five basic car repairs that every driver needs to know.

Changing a Tire

It’s inevitable that you’ll get a flat tire at some point. You don’t want to be stuck on the side of the road because you don’t know how to change it. Fortunately, it’s very simple to change a tire as long as you have the right tools with you. In particular, you will need a car jack and lug wrench.

You will need to loosen the lug-nuts, jack up the car, remove the lug-nuts and tire, replace with the spare, put the lug-nuts back on, lower the car, and tighten the lug nuts. Make sure that you can easily be seen by any passing cars my turning on your hazard lights. If you’ve replaced the tire with a temporary tire, make sure that you replace it as soon as possible.

Replacing a Dead Battery

Car batteries usually last a long time. However, when they die, it can often be unexpected. This is why it’s imperative that you know how to replace a dead battery. It just requires you to remove the clamps on the battery, take out and replace with the old one, and put the clamps back on. You should be able to find a battery fairly easily. You can even look online for Ford Mustang parts or any other car parts.

Changing the Air Filter

Many car owners forget about changing their air filter. However, these car parts are necessary in order to keep your engine free of contaminants. It’s usually just an easy swap. To replace your air filter, you will need to open your hood and locate the air filter, remove the air filter cover and current air filter, insert a new air filter and replace the cover.

Replacing Windshield Wipers

If you use your windshield wipers quite a bit, then you may need to replace them often. While these may not seem like an important part of your car or a repair that can be put off, don’t risk having deteriorated wipers. Not being able to see out the windshield clearly can put you and others on the road in harm’s way. In order to replace your windshield wipers, you usually just need to pull on the wiper to unlatch it from the hook that’s holding it into place, and then snap the new wiper back into place.

Changing a Light

Your car has all sorts of lights that you need in order to stay safe. Your headlights, taillights, and turn signals will need to be replaced from time to time. If this does happen, you need to know how to replace them so that you can stay safe and avoid getting a ticket. Changing a light generally involves you removing the screws that are holding the light’s cover in place, disconnecting the light from its connector, removing and replacing the light, putting the connector back and screwing the cover back into place. Be careful not to touch the glass of the bulb with your bare hands as the oils on your hands can damage the bulb.

As a car owner, you should know how to do all of the repairs listed above. To help, it’s a good idea to keep a spare flashlight, poncho, a first aid kit, and basic tool set in your trunk in case you need to do any repairs while on the road. These repairs are easy to do even for those that don’t have any car repair experience. By performing these simple repairs on your car, you will lessen the likelihood of getting stranded on the side of the road.
