Oscar winning actress Jodie Foster has always been allusive when it comes to her personal life. For years gossip abounded that she was a lesbian but the actress remained mute on the subject neither confirming nor denying the rumors. In 2013 when Foster received the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award at the Golden Globes she was expected by some entertainment insiders to publicly come out. Instead the honoree used the occasion to acknowledge her ex partner, Cydney Bernard, with whom she co-parents two children. Foster also said, "I hope that you're not disappointed that there won't be a coming out speech tonight, because I already did my coming- out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age."
Now fast forward to April 2014 and it seems as if Jodie Foster has decided to fling open her closet door for good. On April 24th it was announced that the 51 year old actress/director had married her girlfriend Alexandra Hedison. Her 44 year old new wife is a photographer and actress who previously dated entertainer Ellen DeGeneres. Foster's ongoing efforts to keep her private life just that doesn't seem to be possible in today's world of the internet. Celebrities must now be aware not only of the prying eyes of the paparazzi but also anyone with a cell phone who can easily snap an ungarded pic and almost instantly upload it onto Twitter or Instagram for all the world to see.
So far this year a number of celebrity lesbians have been making news. On New Years Eve, for example, Lily Tomlin and her partner Jane Wagner got married after being together for 42 years; a noteworthy achievement for any couple gay or straight.
Also this year Canadian actress Ellen Page publicly came out during a heartfelt speech at a LGBT youth conference. The 26 year old Nova Scotia born actress was quoted as saying. "I am tired of hiding and I am tired of lying by omission."
Recently there have been media reports that Fast and the Furious star Michelle Rodriguez is engaged to 21 year old model Cara Delevingne. Although Rodriguez has previously alluded to having bisexual experiences she's always rejected attempts to label her sexuality.
Another female celebrity who recently went public about her sexuality is Good Morning America co-host Robin Roberts. In a Facebook post Roberts (53) acknowledged her girlfriend of ten years, Amber Laign, and the important role she's played throughout Robert's arduous battle with cancer.
Once upon a time not too long ago it was considered career suicide for an actress to come out as a lesbian. Who can forget the uproar when Ellen DeGeneres came out on her TV sitcom? Her show faced boycotts by an array of "family" and religious groups before being cancelled. For several years afterward it looked as if the comedian's career would never recover. But recover it did; in fact after a short hiatus DeGeneres returned to television and surpassed all expectations by becoming a successful talk show host as well as one of the most powerful and influential women in Hollywood. If anyone doubts the extent of her fame and popularity just check out her Oscar selfie and see how many times it's been retweeted.
