Importance of Setting Goals

During the journey of life, the goals that we set for ourselves can be compared to target destinations. When planning a trip there is a number of steps we take to ensure we get the most of the trip. We may map out a route, plan an itinerary, learn a few phrases of the native language of the country we are visiting, etc...

Likewise in order to succeed in life we need to know where we are headed. The goals that we set and the steps that we take to reach these goals can help us to achieve the desired success in all aspects of our life.

Baseball Hall of Famer and legendary New York Yankee Yogi Berra said it best: “If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up some place else”.

In order to emphasize the importance of goal setting, let us consider three different types of goals and why they are important:

  1. Immediate goals
  2. Short term goals
  3. Long term goals

We will now consider these one at a time.

Immediate Goals

As the name suggests immediate goals can be accomplished immediately. This can be compared to our daily checklist.

For example, in connection with our employment we may have certain productivity goals that we want to reach throughout the day. If we are pursuing a career as a freelance writer we may have goals in connection of how many articles we want to write or how many words we want to produce an hour. These immediate goals will help us maintain our focus. They also help us to gauge our progress. At the end of the day we can see what we accomplished and we can use that to either build upon or to make adjustments for the next day.

Short Term Goals

Short term goals are goals that can generally be accomplished within a short period (a few days, weeks, months). For example for your business you may have daily (which would also far under immediate), weekly and monthly sales goals that you set for yourself. If you have these sales figures clearly in mind you can make plans to reach these goals. For example, maybe you will need additional advertisement for the month.

Also if you fall a bit short of your goals you make needed adjustments so that you make your future goals. Our long terms goals are basically made up by a series of short term goals.

Long Term Goals

Long term goals are goals which can take many years to obtain. For example if you have the goal of retiring early at 55 and you are only 35 years old, it will take 20 years to achieve that goal. But having that goal in mind will affect how you invest your money, purchasing decisions, etc...

Quite often we hear the expression 5 year plan, 10 year plan, 20 year plan, etc... Those plans can be considered long term goals. By thinking ahead not only does this give us something to look forward to but it helps with our planning and decision making.

Goals Equal Success

In order to succeed in life we need to set attainable and realistic goals. For the sake of repetition for emphasis we can break down the goals that we set into the following three categories:

  1. Immediate goals
  2. Short term goals
  3. Long term goals

As we set these goals for ourselves not only will we enjoy the trip, but we will reach our desired destination.
