Smart inhalers: An innovative solution for management of respiratory conditions

Smart inhalers are an advanced form of inhalers that can be digitally connected to apps on phone or tablet, helping physicians to manage patient’s respiratory condition more effectively. Smart inhalers use Bluetooth technology to identify the use of inhaler as well as remind patients to take their medication and gather data to help guide care. The device also sends an alert on smartphones when a patient enters high pollen or highly polluted area, which allows a patient to decide whether to avoid the environment. Smart inhalers have sensors, enabling the patients to automatically track how often the inhaler is being used by the patient, hence avoiding the chances of any human errors.

Dynamics in Smart Inhalers Market

According to a new market research study titled ‘Smart Inhalers Market to 2027 – Global Analysis and Forecasts by Product, Disorder and End User.’ The Global Smart Inhalers Market is expected to reach US$ 8,033.21 Mn in 2027 from US$ 1,094.26 Mn in 2018.

The demand for smart inhalers has increased significantly during recent years, owing to the rising levels of air pollution. Also, an increase in smoking habits among individuals has been a driving factor. The rise in air pollution levels has been a matter of rising concern in developed as well as developing economies. As per the World Health Organization (WHO) released during May 2018, 9 out of 10 individuals are believed to breathe air containing high levels of pollutants. Studies reveal, above 90% of air pollution-related deaths worldwide occur in low- and middle-income countries, especially in Asian and African countries, followed by low- and middle-income countries of the Eastern Mediterranean, European and the American regions.

Also, an increase in smoking habits is highly associated with an increase in the number of cases of asthma. As per CDC, cigarette smoking is among the leading cause of preventable disease as well as death in the United States, causing more than 480,000 deaths every year, (i.e., about 1 in 5 deaths). In India, a rise in the use of smart inhalers has been witnessed due to the increasing prevalence of respiratory diseases such as asthma and COPD, along with smoking habits. As per the University of Washington’s Global Burden of Disease study, 2018, COPD was the second-highest cause of death in India, leading to the death of almost 958,000. Also, as per the Tobacco Atlas, in India, more than 625,000 children aged between 10 to 14 years old and 1 billion adults above 15 years of age continue to use tobacco every day. The factors mentioned above are expected to increase the demand for smart inhalers market in India at a significant rate.

Challenges in the Adoption of Smart Inhalers

Limited awareness regarding the usage of smart inhalers is a common factor inhibiting extensive adoption of the device. With each inhalation with the inhaler, the device delivers a decided amount of medication to the lungs. However, often have difficulty in adapting the correct inhaler technique, and hence, receive insufficient medicines. This applies equally to both metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) and dry powder inhalers (DPIs), which leads to poor disease control along with increased healthcare costs.

Studies reveal due to a patient’s error in drug intake, which occurs approximately 70 percent to 90 percent of the time, results in 7 percent to 40 percent of the drug delivered to the lungs. An error in the coordination between inhalation and release of drugs is commonly observed error among the patients. Even a short delay leads to only 20 percent of the medication being delivered to the lungs. Improper inhalation technique creates decreased efficacy through reduced deposition of drug in the lungs, eventually leading to an increase in the rate of disease severity and therefore causing an increase in healthcare costs. Various individuals, therefore, prefer using the traditional inhalers, since they are comparatively easy to operate, hence leading to limited demand for smart inhalers.

Geographic Analysis of Smart Inhalers Market

The demand for smart inhalers is anticipated to be significantly high in the Asia Pacific due to the rising prevalence of asthma and COPD, increasing smoking habits among individuals and rise in the aging population. In China, the prevalence of COPD has been witnessed among the aging population, leading to increased mortality rates in the country. COPD accounted for almost 1 million deaths yearly which represented around 30% of all deaths from COPD across the globe. In India, there has been a rise in the number of smokers since the previous years. As per the data published by Tobacco Atlas, in India, more than 625,000 children aged between 10 to 14 years old as well as 1 billion adults above 15 years of age consume tobacco every day. Also, a significant rise in asthma cases among Australians has been observed during recent years. As per the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) National Health Survey (NHS), almost 2.5 million Australians, accounting for 11% of the total population have asthma, based on self-reported data from the 2014–15.

With the rising adoption of digital means, the demand for smart inhalers is considered to increase at a significant rate. For 2017, the number of smartphone users in Canada was estimated to reach 24.02 million. The increasing penetration of smartphones and growing wireless network technology provides improved digital healthcare system with novel opportunities to address more challenges associated with accessibility, quality, effectiveness, efficiency, and cost of healthcare.
