A patient once asked: How can I take time from my busy schedule to have a Hair Transplant? This raised the question of how long a hair follicle remains alive if properly preserved. This question was answered by an experiment that took place in China. When hair follicles are stored in Saline Solution at 0-degree celsius they remain viable up to 7 days but their capacity to regrowth to 100% was short-lived by 48 hours. So, the busy doctor who could not afford time from his busy schedule opted to have his follicles removed after his clinic hours one evening, stored overnight as the experiment suggested and returned the next evening to have 3,500 of his storage follicles planted. Recently this doctor came for his follow up on the hair growth after 6 months. He was elated by the fullness of his new growing hair.
What a major difference from his before photographs! His barber who has seen other clients with hair transplant posted his photos in his barbershop with this comment “You do not have to wait a day to have a hair transplant”. This proves that necessity is the mother of invention. To learn more about the hair transplantation process, continue reading.
SURGICAL HAIR LOSS RECOVERY
Since hair loss can start at puberty and be ongoing throughout life, consideration upon analysis of the underlying causes will dictate the many kinds of treatments which can stabilize and reverse the progression. Therefore, a free consultation with an experienced Thornhill hair transplant physician is necessary to provide the best combination of treatments available.
If your hair loss is stable and has already reached the end stage of progression, then Hair Transplantation Surgery would be a practical consideration. If your hair loss is still ongoing but has already reached a point of no return, then a combination of medication coupled with Hair Transplantation may be the best approach. The feedback from the patient and his or her expectations will help determine which or any approach is the right one.
Hair transplantation is a surgical technique that involves moving individual hair follicles from one part of the body (the donor site) to bald or balding parts (the recipient site). It is the last therapy. It is primarily used to treat male pattern baldness. In this case, grafts containing hair follicles that are genetically resistant to balding are transplanted to the bald scalp. Likewise, it is also used to restore eyelashes, eyebrows, beard hair, chest hair, and pubic hair and to fill in scars caused by accidents or surgery such as face-lifts and previous hair transplants.
Since hair naturally grows in follicles that contain groupings of 1 to 4 hairs, today’s most advanced techniques transplant these naturally occurring 1–4 hair “follicular units” in their natural groupings. Thus modern hair transplantation can achieve a natural appearance by mimicking nature hair for hair. This hair transplant procedure is called Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). Donor hair can be harvested in two very different ways.
A strip of scalp is removed under local anesthesia, the wound is then sutured back together and this piece of scalp tissue is then cut into small pieces of tissue called grafts which are then transplanted back into the thinning area of the patient’s head. This method will leave a linear scar in the donor area, which should be covered by a patient’s hair (if long). The recovery period is around 2 weeks and the stitches will dissolve by themselves eliminating the need to return for suture removal. You do not need to shave your hair for this procedure.
FOLLICULAR UNIT EXTRACTION OR FUE HARVESTING
Individual follicles of hair are removed under local anesthesia with either a power or manual operation; this extraction uses tiny punches between 0.6mm and 1.25mm in diameter. Each follicle is then reinserted back into the scalp in the thinning area using different gauge solid core needles to create the openings. Because individual follicles are removed, only small, punctate scars remain and any post-surgical pain is minimized. No sutures are required and recovery from FUE is within 7 days. You need to shave your hair.
