Promoting Worker Safety in Tunnel Construction

Worker safety should always be a top consideration for employees and employers, no matter the industry in which they work. If you’re working underground, safety becomes even more of a priority. Promoting worker safety is always more important than cutting costs. In addition to preventing costly and tragic workplace injuries, it als also improves your project’s overall speed and efficiency of completion. Here are the steps that need to be implemented in order to promote workforce safety in a tunnel project.

Invest in Training

Remember that your workers are your most important pieces of equipment and that they have the most capacity to keep themselves and others safe. Ropes, rigging, and harnesses support safety measures but cannot do the thinking for you. In order to keep your workers safe throughout the project, training needs to be an ongoing topic of discussion. Weekly or monthly safety-focused training meetings should be planned so that issues can be addressed. This will allow everyone to be on the same page when it comes to the level of safety that you require for the job. The more your workers take safety concerns seriously, the more they will be able to implement them on projects where they may be out of contact with others for long periods of time.

Implement Protocols

Accidents can occur from time to time even with the best safety programs in place. Having the protocols in place to deal with these accidents can help to protect your workers from further safety problems. For example, develop escape protocols and practice them at your safety meetings. You want your workers to know exactly what to do in the event of an emergency, whether it involves collapse, flooding, or electrical failure. This will work to save lives and prevent any further accidents from occurring as a result of the initial problem. So take the time to implement emergency response protocols so that your workers can react properly if the unthinkable occurs.

Use Proper Equipment.

It is vitally important to not cut corners based on cost where the proper equipment is concerned. High-performing assets are going to be safe assets, and newer machines are often more reliable than old ones. Use proper lubricants and consider hiring out for specific equipment that you don’t use regularly instead of using old machines. Many companies offer crane hires or machinery rentals of various sorts. Your workers won’t struggle with trying to haul materials down into the work area and run the risk of being injured on the job. Safety guards should also be used and inspected on a regular basis. By investing in quality equipment and even hiring outside professionals to assist in certain jobs, you will greatly decrease the risk of injury and other safety hazards.

Develop CAPA Programs

When an accident does occur, you don’t want it to continue happening to other employees. The best way to fix and prevent injuries is to use a Corrective and Preventative Action program. The point of CAPA is to analyze the situation and determine the best course of action that will make the workplace safer for everyone. You don’t have to wait for something to happen in order to implement this program. CAPA’s can be derived from past accidents or other jobsite incidents.

Worker safety should be your number one consideration in order to develop a reliable reputation in the industry. Routine machinery checks, proper use of equipment and safety gear, and reviewing your construction site’s layout will also assist you in determining potential dangers. Use these guidelines to help you promote safe working practices.
