Steps to Season your Aluminium Pans

There is a step by step guideline on how to season aluminium pans properly. You can season your new as well old aluminium pans by following steps without much effort.

Wash your Pan with Warm, Soapy Water

First of all, wash your aluminium pan with warm soapy water before seasoning it. This will remove any dirt or dust that can cause scratches or discoloration of your pan. Do not leave your pan for soaking as this can damage the coating of the pan. Dry the pan with a soft cloth when you have finished washing. If you have a new aluminium pan remove the stickers before seasoning. Label stickers can be easily removed from the pan. Use a non-metallic tool to lift one of the corners and rub away any remaining sticker. Do not use a knife or any metal tools to scrape the base as it may cause scratches and damage that will affect the following uses.

Season the Pan with Vegetable Oil

If you have an electric oven set it to pre-heat over low heat. You can also use your gas stove, make sure to set the burner to its lowest setting. If you set your burner on high heat it can burn the outside of the pan. Now rub the inside of the pan all around with vegetable oil. Do not forget to apply oil on the sides, these are often left out. After applying vegetable oil, put the pan on the burner to heat up. Het the pan until all of the oil is gone, it can take around 20 minutes. Remove the pan from the burner using an oven mitt and leave on a protected surface to cool completely.

Rewash the Pan with Warm Water and Dish Soap

The next step to do a final quick wash with warm water and dish soap. Wash your pan by hand while putting in the dishwasher can damage its seasoning. Wipe the pan with a soft cloth or paper towel to dry and store it carefully to prevent unnecessary scratches.

Maintain the Seasoning

When using your seasoned pan, make sure that you pre-heat it first and always use fat while cooking. Try not to let anything sit too long as this can damage the surface of your seasoned aluminium pan. However, you will need to re-season your pan after every wash. Never use a metal scrubber or harsh detergent to clean your aluminium pan, as they can damage the seasoning of it.

In conclusion, when you’ve seasoned your aluminium pan it’s important to provide care to avoid any unexpected scratches or damages. If you can season your pan properly it will increase the lifespan of your aluminium pan. Moreover, proper seasoning makes the cleaning process of the pan easier and protect the non-stick coating for a long time.
