Which Types of Ride on Mowers Are the Best?

Do you love spending your weekends outside mowing the lawn? We don’t believe you. Big backyards can easily take hours and hours of maintenance each weekend – time that could be better spent with friends and family. If you’re looking for ways to cut down on the yard work, then a ride on mower may be the answer you’ve been searching for. However, with a huge market available to choose from, it can be difficult to know which mower is the best, and which is all talk and no torque.

We’ve put together this simple guide to help you start your search.

  • Is the price right?

A ride on mower is an expensive purchase, especially when compared with a standard push model. However, with options available between $2000 to $10,000, there is a huge difference in what you can expect to pay. We recommend setting yourself a budget and staying within it. In that respect, the best type of mower is the one that doesn’t put you into unnecessary debt!

  • Can I try before I buy?

Many dealerships let you take the mower for a test drive, much like you would if you were buying a new car. We can’t recommend this enough! As there are many different steering options available, it’s important that you choose a system you are comfortable with. This includes lawn tractors, which feature a steering wheel and operate just like a car, while other models have leavers which you push and pull to control the machine.

  • Can I get into tight spaces?

Ride on mowers are far bigger than push mowers, so if your yard features lots of tight nooks and crannies, garden beds and trees, then we recommend choosing a machine that you can easily manoeuvre around your property. For instance, a Zero Turn mower features a rear-mounted engine and rear-wheel breaking, which translates into a very tight turning circle.

  • What other features are available?

These days, mowers don’t just mow – they offer a number of different features as well. Consider the mulching and catching capabilities of the machine you’re looking at. Would you prefer a model that collects the grass clippings as you go? Or would a ride on mower that turned the cut grass into mulch before dispersing it across your lawn?

  • Does it suit the condition of my property?

Considering your property is critical when buying a new ride on mower. The machine should be powerful enough to mow your entire backyard with ease – for instance, a yard up to 1.5 acres would be suited to an engine size of 16 to 21 horse power, whilst a larger yard would need a more powerful engine. Similarly, if your property has slopes and hills, it’s important that you invest in a mower that is strong and durable enough to get up and over the hills

  • Am I comfortable?

Lastly, it’s important that you feel comfortable with the purchase, as it’s usually a pretty big one! If you’re having any niggles in the back of your mind, make sure you address them. Chances are, other people have felt the same way and your dealer will have an alternative option that still meets your needs.

At the end of the day, it’s important to remember that the best ride on mower is the best mower for you. You want a machine that meets the needs of your property, offers the features that you’ve been looking for, and that you feel comfortable driving. This may not necessarily be the most popular model on the market, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t an excellent choice for you. Whilst we hope these tips and tricks have pointed you in the right direction, we recommend speaking with your local garden equipment dealership – they can work through your specific wants and needs, and suggest a mower that you can be confident you’ll love now, and into the future.
