In this shloka, causes are explained.

(Reference: Charak Samhita (Chikitsa Sthan) chapter-13 and shloka-35 and 36)

As per modern aspect:

  • The liver is the largest internal organ in the body which is essential in maintaining the body functions properly. It removes the poisons from the blood and produces several immune agents that control infections. It helps in the formation of proteins that regulate blood clotting and produces bile that helps to absorb fats and fat-soluble vitamins.
  • In liver cirrhosis, scar tissue blocks the flow of blood through the organ and preventing it from working properly.

Liver cirrhosis has various causes. Several people who are suffering from liver cirrhosis are synonymous with chronic alcoholism, but in fact, alcohol consumption is only one of the causes

As per Ayurveda aspect:

  • It is correlated to yakrtdalyudra. In this disease, there is a vitiation of prana (a type of vata dosha) and suppression of Agni (digestive fire) which leads to indigestion and results in the vitiation of apana (a type of vata dosha) and causes obstruction to the upward and downward channels which helps in circulation.
  • These vitiated doshas get lodges in between the skin and muscle tissues and causes distension of the lower abdomen.

What are the causes of liver cirrhosis?

Alcoholic liver disease

  • Liver cirrhosis has various causes. Several people who are suffering from liver cirrhosis are synonymous with chronic alcoholism, but in fact, alcohol consumption is only one of the causes. Liver cirrhosis usually develops after more than a decade of heavy consumption. The amount of alcohol consumption that can injure the liver varies from person to person. Alcohol damages the liver by blocking the metabolism of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates.

Hepatitis C:

  • Hepatitis C virus is the major cause of liver cirrhosis. Infection with this virus causes inflammation of the liver and low-grade damage to the liver and after several decades may lead to liver cirrhosis. The hepatitis B virus is the most common cause of liver cirrhosis.

Hepatitis B:

  • Hepatitis B also causes liver inflammation and injury that over several decades can lead to cirrhosis of the liver.

Hepatitis D:

  • Hepatitis D is another virus that infects the liver but only those who already have hepatitis B. Autoimmune hepatitis: This disease can be caused by the weak immune system that attacks the liver and causes its inflammation, damage, and eventually may lead to scarring and cirrhosis.

Liver cirrhosis usually develops after more than a decade of heavy consumption. The amount of alcohol consumption that can injure the liver varies from person to person.

Inherited diseases:

  • Diseases such as alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, Wilson's disease, and glycogen storage diseases are among the inherited diseases that interfere with the way the liver produces, processes, and stores enzymes.

Nonalcoholic steato-hepatitis (NASH):

  • In NASH, there is an accumulation of fats that builds up in the liver and this eventually causes scarring of tissue. This type of hepatitis is associated with diabetes, obesity, coronary artery disease, and treatment with corticosteroid medications.

Blocked bile ducts:

  • The ducts that carry bile out of the liver are blocked and this bile backs up and damages liver tissue. The most common cause is primary biliary cirrhosis, in this disease, the ducts become inflamed, blocked, and scarred. Secondary biliary cirrhosis can happen if the ducts are injured.

Drugs, toxins, and infections:

  • Prolonged use of drugs and severe reactions to prescription drugs, prolonged exposure to environmental toxins and repeated bouts of heart failure with liver congestion can all lead to cirrhosis.

What are the symptoms of liver cirrhosis?

People suffering from liver cirrhosis have generally no symptoms in its early stages. By the time when scar tissues started replacing healthy cells, the liver functions start to fail and the person started experiencing one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Loss of appetite
  • Weakness
  • Nausea
  • Weight loss
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Fatigue
  • Spider-like vessels develop on the skin
  • Clubbing of fingers
  • Bleeding in the esophagus due to pooling of blood (esophageal varices)
  • Menstrual abnormalities in females

What are the complications of liver cirrhosis?

Ascites and edema:

  • When the liver started losing its ability for the formation of protein albumin and the water started accumulating in the legs and abdomen.

Bruising and bleeding:

  • When the liver stops production of the proteins that needed for blood clotting, a person will bruise easily. There may be reddish discoloration of the palms of hands and blotchy with palmar erythema.

  • Jaundice is the yellowish discoloration of skin and eyes that occurs when the liver does not absorb enough bilirubin.

  • Deposition of bile products in the skin may cause intense itching.

Toxins in the blood or brain:

  • Liver damage cannot remove toxins from the blood, causing them to accumulate in the blood and eventually the brain. This can cause personality changes, forgetfulness, and changes in sleeping habits.

Sensitivity to medication:

  • Cirrhosis slows down the ability of the liver to filter medications from the blood. Because the liver is unable to remove drugs from the blood at the usual rate and they act longer than expected.

Portal hypertension:

  • Normally, blood from the spleen is carried to the liver through the portal vein. But in liver cirrhosis, it slows down the normal flow of blood through the Liver and this condition is called as portal hypertension.

Liver cancer:

  • Hepatocellular carcinoma, it is a type of liver cancer commonly caused by cirrhosis that starts in the liver tissue itself.

Problems in other organs:

  • Cirrhosis can cause immune system dysfunction which leads to infection. Fluid present in the abdomen may become infected with bacteria, which is normally present in the intestines. Cirrhosis may also lead to kidney dysfunction, failure, and osteoporosis also.
