What is HDMI?

There is a significant variation between the lengths of HDMI cables. These cables are able to run from one foot up to 50 feet. However, the cables more than 25 feet may result in loss or degradation of the signal.

What is fiber optics?

Fiber optics is different from the conventional copper cable. It can send information over longer distances as compared to the lmr 400 coax. This cable sends information in the form of light by using glass. The fiber optics technology was originally developed for endoscopes in the 1950s. It helped the doctors to see inside the human body without cutting any part. Then later in the 1960s, the engineers further enhanced this technology for transmitting the voice signals.

If you look at the construction of fiber optics cable, then you will observe that it is made up of very thin strands of glass or plastic known as optical fibers. Some cables consist of very a smaller number of strands whereas others have as many as several hundred strands. These strands are less than a tenth as thick as a human hair. Each strand has the ability to carry 25,000 telephone calls. So, a fiber optics cable is capable of handling millions of calls. 

The information is carried by using light-based technology. If one computer sends the information through fiber optics to the other computer then the electrical signals are first converted into light signals and then the light pulses travel through the cable. Then at the receiver side, the light signals are converted back into electrical signals. The light pulses are generated by using laser or LEDs whereas the light is converted back into electrical signals by using the photoelectric cell (light-detecting component).

Category 5 and 5e

The cat5 and Cat5e cables look almost similar in terms of physical appearance but cat5e is the enhanced version of cat5 cables. The cat5 cables have become obsolete now. Cat5e cables offer lower-noise therefore, it is less prone to crosstalk.

It is one of the most common types of cabling used for deployment purposes. The reason is that it offers fast speed at reasonable rates. Gigabit Ethernet uses 4 data pairs as compared to the Fast Ethernet which uses 2 data pairs.

Cat5e has the ability to support speeds of up to 1000 Mbps. These cables are flexible enough for small space installations like homes. However, cat5 cables are also used in office space.

Category 6

Cat6 has the ability to support up to 10 Gbps and frequencies of up to 250 MHz. The cat5e cables are able to support 1.5-2 twists per cm, Cat6 cables are wounded more tightly and they can feature 2 or more twists per cm (The twists per cm depends on the manufacturers of cable).

As compared to cat5e cables, the cat6 cables contain thicker sheaths. A standard Ethernet cable supports distances of up to 100 meters whereas the cat6 cable only supports 37-55 meters. As it has a thicker sheath, so it prevents the Near End Crosstalk (NEXT) and Alien Crosstalk (AXT).

Though the cat6 cables offer better performance and speed but still, most of the people opt for cat5e cables because they are cost-effective and can support Gigabits speed.

How HDMI is better than Fiber or CAT5E/CAT6

All of us want good image quality for our screens. In the past, it was not possible to achieve the best screen experience but with the advent of HDMI technology, it is possible now. 

HDMI is able to pass higher-resolution audio. There are some formats like Blu-ray which cannot transmit on optical or cat5e/cat6 cables, so here, HDMI is a better choice.

Moreover, HDMI is also able to transmit video signals. So, in case you want a single cable between two devices, then you must choose HDMI. However, you can use fiber and cat5e/cat6 cables for extending the HDMI signals.

Advantages of HDMI

HDMI is a very powerful system which is able to send information over long distances. By using HDMI, you can send images more than 1200 meters without losing the quality of the picture.

Apart from the quality, it also prevents electromagnetic interference which usually appears due to the surrounding environment. So, for getting a clearer and better-quality picture (free from interference), you can use HDMI technology.

As mentioned earlier, the HDMI cables are of great quality, so no matter which type of environment you deploy these cables, they will perform well even in hard environments. Either you are using them in commercial areas or home spaces, they will prevent interference.
