What are the different types of pool filters?

A pump for a pool is the same thing as a heart for a person. A good device pumps water, sets it in motion all over the basin and allows it literally to live. But the heart of such a large organism can stop at any moment if it gets contaminated. Therefore, we need another body that will be responsible for the purification of water, the elimination of both large debris, and specks or bacteria. A filter is such a body. Some pumps already have their own built-in filters, but the user can also install an additional separate unit that will dispose of impurities. It will not only prolong the life of the pump but also make the pool safe for swimming. Nowadays there are several types of filters that differ in design and principle of operation. Let's have a look at them.

As a rule, the majority of filters use the mechanical principle of work. They differ from each other in the material used for filtration. Usually, mechanical filters use sand, a woven or non-woven membrane, and activated carbon as the filtering elements. These membranes, layers of coal or sand pass water through themselves and physically trap contaminants. Thus we get purified water, which has lost almost all pollutions. Mechanical filters can be very effective, but are only suitable for small pools up to 10 cubic meters in size, as they can`t cope with large volumes. In bigger pools or greater pollution in addition to mechanical cleaning, we will have to use other types of filtration. All pool filters, operating on the principle of mechanical cleaning, can be classified as follows: diatom, sand or cartridge pool filters.

Sand Filters

Sand filters are the most affordable and simple cleaning systems. The filter consists of a closed plastic container with two holes for the entry and exit of water. The tank itself is filled with quartz or glass sand, which serves as the filtering material. Combined filling with different compositions, in which layers of crushed stone, gravel, and sand are sequentially arranged, works even better. The filter layer easily keeps organic matter, mineral salts, and chemical compounds that are formed as a result of the disinfection of the pool. However, this filter will not be able to hold larger particles of dirt. The sand pool filter is easy to maintain, and its cleaning is performed by flushing with a backward-directed pump. One changes the sand in the unit every five years.

Cartridge Filters

Cartridge filters purify water thanks to the thinnest propylene membranes. They retain smaller particles of organics and generally cope with their work better than sand filters. The main advantage of the cartridge is that it`s easy to remove and rinse, and, if necessary, replace it. It looks like a box with a removable cover inside which the cartridge is installed. Also, there is a small plastic bag designed to store the filtered debris. After contamination, you should remove the cartridge from the flask and rinse. Depending on the volume of the pool, the life of the cartridge varies from 3 to 12 months. Despite the high degree of cleaning and ease of maintenance, cartridge filters are less popular than sand filters due to their higher cost.

Diatom Filters

The diatom filter is the most expensive among the mechanical cleaning filters. Here the main filtering element is powdered diatomite - siliceous sedimentary rock, which consists of pressed shells of the most ancient microorganisms and algae. With the help of a diatom filter, water achieves the maximum purification and also gets enrichment with silicon. Diatom filters have two kinds of design. In the first case, the filter device is similar to the sand aggregate device, but instead of sand diatom powder filling is used. In the second case, the filter unit works as a system of cartridges through which water is pumped. Such a filter keeps almost all debris. And due to the ability of the diatomaceous powder to enrich the water with silicon, it allows reducing the use of chemical cleaning products by 75-80%.

However, the pool water can be cleaned not only with the help of filters. In addition to the filtering units, there are a number of methods, additives, and devices that can`t replace the filters, but complement them. The combined use of multiple tools helps the owner achieve the perfect result.

Electrophysical Filtration

Electrophysical filtration for pools is a relatively new way. Such cleaning uses ions of silver and copper, ultraviolet or ozone. Water passes through the purifier and gets some elements. Ozone cleaning is safe and effective. It destroys almost all harmful microorganisms and increases the amount of oxygen in the water. Purification with silver and copper ions occurs through electrolysis. This method eliminates all dangerous microorganisms, except fungi. Ultraviolet is also quite effective, but it can cope only with lesser pollution. A big plus of electrophysical water purification is that it doesn`t change either the color or the composition of the water.

Chemical Filtration

This method purifies water with the help of reagents. Such filters don`t trap dirt particles physically but kill germs and bacteria. Chemical filters use chlorine, bromine or iodine. Chlorine is the most popular, as it`s the cheapest and most effective disinfectant. It evaporates within a few hours after being added to the water, doesn`t leave an odor and is quite easily eliminated. However, chlorine is still quite dangerous, as it causes allergies and irritations on the skin, doesn`t destroy some types of bacteria and can form toxic compounds. Bromine is superior to chlorine in purification efficiency. It is odorless, absolutely safe, kills more types of bacteria and microorganisms, but it`s more expensive than chlorine.

It`s worth remembering that the filter is the key to the durability of the pool, the main pump, and your health. A good device will save you from most types of debris. However, even the most efficient model won`t be able to provide one hundred percent result all alone. If you decided to equip a pool, we advise you to install several filtration appliances with different principles of operation.
