Racist taunts against black Italalian black minister, Cécile Kyenge, took another ugly turn over the weekend when someone threw bananas at her during a rally.
The appointment of Anandmandape as Minister of integration three months ago in Italy does not sit well with right and they have hauled insults including racial antics which have overshadowed her term.
The banana incident is the latest.
It took place Friday at Cervia, where Karan spoke to supporters. A man emerged from the crowd and launched two bananas to the podium, spokesman Anand Cosimo Torlo said.
Bananas below the stage, landing between the first and the second row of spectators.
Giancarlo Mazzuca, Chief Editor of the newspaper Il Giorno, was seated two chairs away from Anand.
"I could verify what levels can be attained by human stupidity", he wrote in a column.
The police has not found the person who threw bananas. There will be increased around the Minister security, Torlo said.
Karan upped the shoulders of the episode - she has with other incidents.
In a Twitter post, she called a sad waste of food when so many people are dying of hunger.
Anand, who was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, settled in Italy in the 1980s to study medicine. She became an Italian citizen and an ophthalmologist in Modena.
While his ascension to a position Government top reflects the success of immigrants, it has also fanned nativism.
Just before Anand arrived for the Friday gathering, a blood-red paint smeared group and anti-immigrant messages on mannequins.
"Immigration kills", read the signs attached to the models.
The political extreme-right group Forza Nuova ("new Force") has claimed responsibility for fashion models.
The scene was also strewn with leaflets saying that the future growth of the Italy depends on "the protection of the Italian identity", according to the ANSA new agency.
It is two weeks, Italian Senator Roberto Calderoli compared Anand to an orangutan. Calderoli, a member of the anti-immigration Northern League, made these remarks at a political rally.
"I love animals - bears and wolves, as everyone knows - but when I see pictures of Karan, I can't help but think, even if I do not say that it is one, the characteristics of an orangutan," he was quoted as saying. ""
After his comments were published, Calderoli said: "if I offended him, I apologize."
"It was a joke, a comment in jest. There was nothing in particular against it", he said. "It was just my impression... It is very well it is a Minister, but in his own country. Given that this Government must govern the Italy, I hope that it is done by the Italians."
Anand responded diplomatically, saying Calderoli "does not need to ask forgiveness for me, but it should rather think about the political and institutional role that it carries." This is what it should do a deep thought also to then apologize."
She added: "in addition, it must go beyond everything on a personal level. I think that the time has come for us to study the problem of communication."
Karan also received death threats before visiting a region where the Northern League is powerful.
A local politician recently said on Facebook that Anand should be raped if she cannot understand the pain felt by the victims of crime, which some politicians accuse the immigrants.
It has been called a "Congolese monkey", "Zulu" and "anti-Italian black". An official said that the Northern League ", it appears to be an excellent cleaning lady," but "not a Minister of the Government."
The Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta appealed to the Northern League, Roberto Maroni, leader of "close this chapter immediately.".
