The driver of a boat that was carrying an engaged couple and their friends when it struck a barge was arrested Saturday. The body considered to be that of the bride has been recovered, Police confirmed.
"We have reason to believe that he operated the boat while under the influence " Van Cura, undersheriff of the Rockland County Sheriff's Office said.
The operator of the boat, Jojo K. John, 35, of Nyack, New York, was arrested in a hospital in the region on one count of vehicular manslaughter in the first degree and three counts of assault vehicle in the second degree, Van Cura said to journalists.
John, like the others on the boat, suffered injuries to the head, Friday night, Van Cura said. He added that the operator was not the registered owner of the vessel, which can have more than one owner.
The body believed to be that of Lindsey Stewart of Piermont, New York, was recovered earlier in the day, about an eighth of a mile of the River, Chief William Barbera of the sheriff said to the press.
Searching by air and water for Mark Lennon, who should have been the best man at the wedding 10 August, was suspended at 5 p.m., with intends to return at 10 hours Sunday, Van Cura said.
"We always hope, but obviously, at this time, it is less and less likely that it would be a rescue as opposed to a recovery", he said.
The police received a 911 call from someone on the boat to Friday 10 h 41 pm reports that the ship had struck an object to the South of the Tappan Zee Bridge, he said.
The six had eaten in a restaurant, then boarded the boat and were sailing of the village of Piermont in Rockland County to Tarrytown when the boat collided with three barges that were attached together near the bridge. The barges were used by a contractor who built a new bridge and if he had been since about April, Van Cura said.
Stewart and Lennon went to sea when the Stingray 21 ft motorboat struck one side of one of the barges about 200 feet south of the bridge, located about 25 miles north of Manhattan.
"The barge had some lights on it, if it was properly informed or not part of the investigation," said Van Cura.
"A clear moonlit night, with the lights of bridge, you can see pretty well", said Tom Sobolik in a telephone interview aboard his sailboat near the scene of the accident.
The Moon was full last July 22.
Sobolik is a professional photographer who took many photographs of the River near the bridge, which is about 25 miles north of Manhattan and connects Tarrytown and Nyack.
The fiance of women was among the four who were injured, the family said. He suffered a fractured orbit.
The father-in-law of Stewart, Walter Kosik, said that the family has been notified of the accident early Saturday.
«"It's a nightmare, I do not want any parent - the police comes to your House you wake up from your sleep to tell you that an accident has occurred", said Kosik.»
"She is supposed to marry in two weeks," said Carol Stewart about her daughter. "It may simply cannot finish like that."
