Hair Transplant

What is a hair transplant?

Hair transplant is a surgical procedure of transplanting the hairs from the safe donor area of the scalp which lies at the back of the scalp, to an area affected by the baldness. In the recent scenario, the two most commonly used techniques of performing a hair restoration surgery are- Follicular Unit Transplant(FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction(FUE).

What are the steps involved in the hair restoration surgery?

Administration of local anesthesia-
The first step involved in the process of hair transplant is the administration of local anesthesia, a sedation or a combination of both to a patient. It is done to ensure that a patient does not feel any pain or discomfort during the procedure.

Removal of donor tissue-
Once the patient is administered with the local anesthesia, a hair transplant surgeon then makes the vertical incision around the safe donor area in the back of the scalp to remove the strip that contains hair grafts. The area of the donor strip should be carefully monitored and the tissue should be removed from an area, where the hair density is high.

Storage of donor tissue-
As soon as the process of removing the strip is over, the tissue is stored in a medium which has a composition similar to that of the fluids in the scalp. It is stored carefully in order to avoid any kind of damage to the hair follicles.

Slivering and dissection-
The harvested strip contains a large number of grafts containing hair follicles which should be separated and prepared for transplantation. In this process, the harvested strip is now divided into single layers of hair follicles called the slivers. Each follicle is now trimmed to remove any extra tissue attached to it. The grafts are then separated individually and are now ready to be implanted in the recipient areas.

Creation of the recipient slits-
The recipient slits should be created with utmost care and precision as it defines the final look after a hair transplant. Fine blades and needles are used to create the slits and then the direction of placement of hair follicles is decided. A good hair transplant surgeon ensures that the sites are created in a way the results look completely natural.

Implantation of the hair follicles-
After the recipient sites have been created, an implanter then transplants the prepared hairs in the slits, in a direction that matches the natural direction of hair growth. In this manner, the procedure gets completed and the patient is then given few instructions on the post-operative care. Also, the donor area will be covered with a bandage and a patient will be advised to wear a cap. The bandage can be removed the following day.

Is the procedure painful?
If you are a person who wishes to undergo a hair transplant surgery but are fearful about the pain, it is important for you to understand that the first step of the procedure is to administer a patient with the local anesthesia. The surgery is performed under the effect of sedatives, so a person does not feel any pain and stays completely comfortable throughout the surgery. However, you may experience soreness and redness on the scalp for two or three days and your hair transplant surgeon may prescribe you some medicines to relieve the pain.
