Manchester United have officially announced the signing of Brazilian midfielder Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk on a five-year contract with the option of a further year, the second arrival at Old Trafford this summer.
The 25-year-old passed a medical and agreed personal terms at the start of the month, and the club made it official on Thursday afternoon after sorting out Visa requirements behind the scenes.
Speaking to MUTV after his big-money move was complete, Fred said: “I’m really happy. I’m so happy to be here and to have the opportunity to play for this club. It’s a huge club with great history and it’s a real honour to perform for United.
“I’m just so happy to have completed the transfer and now look forward to playing for the club. Manchester United, as I say, is a huge club. When I was young, it was a name I used to hear and it was a name I used to see on computer games and I used to play with the team.
“For me, Manchester United means greatness. This is the biggest club in the world and I am delighted to be a part of this amazing team. To work with José Mourinho, who has won so many trophies in his time as a coach, is an opportunity not to be missed.
The capture of Fred is United’s second of the transfer window, following the arrival of 19-year-old FC Porto right-back Diogo Dalot in a deal worth around £20m – he’s the first of a few defensive acquisitions expected before the new campaign kicks off.
The Brazil international is now fully focused on helping Brazil secure a fifth World Cup this summer before he joins the pre-season tour of the United States where he will meet his new team-mates, something he is very excited about.

“I cannot wait to get started and to meet my new team-mates. I would like to thank everyone at Shakhtar Donetsk for everything they have done for me over the past five years.
“This is a very exciting time for me with my focus now fully on the World Cup with Brazil. I want to thank all of the Manchester United fans, even now, just as I am signing. So many of them reached out to me and asked me to join the club and that really meant a lot to me.
“All I can say to you in return is that I’m going to run my hardest and work my hardest to make history for the club and the fans.”
José Mourinho has had his say on his new man, who will join the likes of Paul Pogba, Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matić as a solid option in midfield throughout the 2018-19 season in the Premier League and Champions League.
“Fred will complement our other midfielders' qualities, which we need; his creative brain and passing vision will give us another dimension to our game. I am very happy he is joining our club and I believe our players know how important he can be in our team.”
