Best Hotels in NSW(Tamworth)

By David Calvin

In 1888 Tamworth became the first town in Australia & the southern hemisphere to provide its residents with electric street lighting. The hotel was built on the old power station or ‘power house’ site, hence the name. The power station operated for 67 years, closing in 1955 when it could no longer meet the demands of the growing city. It was demolished in 1983 & the new Quality Hotel Powerhouse opened on this site in December 1986. During the building phase of the hotel, efforts were made to retain as much as possible from the original site.  The obelisk at the front of the hotel was erected to celebrate the history of Tamworth as the First City of Lights.

Welcome to the Quality Hotel Powerhouse, Tamworth's only 4.5-star hotel open 24 hours for your convenience. The Powerhouse offers stylish accommodation, warm professional service & delicious cuisine at The Workshop Kitchen & Coal Bunker Bar.

A wood fired oven & grill are at the heart of The Workshop Kitchen. Both are fired up daily with the finest Pilliga Western Red Ironbark which imparts a unique smoked flavour. All our beef is sourced locally where possible from Paul Avery's Mountain View Farm at Piallamore to Jack's Creek at Willow Tree - two time winner of the World's Best Steak.

The Workshop Kitchen achieved a 2 Glass rating for its extensive wine list in the 2017 Australia's Wine List of the Year Awards. This global accolade recognises world class wine lists & establishments that are committed to presenting the best possible wine selection & service to their customers. The Workshop Kitchen is the first restaurant in the region to ever receive a 2 Glass rating with 184 wines on the menu and 42 wines by the glass.

The abundant menu, driven by fresh, local New England produce, is served by professional & engaging staff. Entrees are available in both small and large serves and dietary needs can be catered for with ease.
