In short, the national team made waves internationally. The  new millennium saw one exception to the persistent nondescript performance. In 2010, the country beat Indonesia to win the AFF Suzuki Cup. Some thought the drought was over and the tide had turned. They were quickly disabused of this optimism. That the slide came with football’s transformation from amateur to semi-professional and professional is all the more puzzling.

Lately, as a result of the impending vote for the president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), controversy has been swirling around the game. Charges of corruption — proven untrue by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission — were levelled at FAM officials. That said, if corrupt practices were uncovered, it would not have been surprising, given the massive corruption uncovered in football’s world body itself. But the evidence did point to procedural and technical issues that require correction by FAM.

Is this part of the problem afflicting the game, causing the national team to spectacularly underperform in a 3-0 defeat to Indonesia in a friendly? In steps a Malaysian who owns English Championship club Queens Park Rangers. When asked if he might entertain the idea of the FAM presidency, he answered in the affirmative. Leaving aside the dissension caused from an obvious misunderstanding, he places the burden of the Malaysian team’s lethargic performance on the need for entrepreneurs to run the show.

While he has done much for his football club, presumably spending large sums of money in its reorganisation and rebuilding, the results are yet to come through. He proposes to turn the Malaysian league around if given the opportunity. But will turning the game into a commodity at the league level save the national team? The Malaysian team was at its best when amateur. For little monetary reward, it built skills, driven by love of  football and pride in the country. After all, at the national level, players are called to perform a national service, which must be driven by a passionate patriotism. Thus far, turning professional has not stirred patriotism.

If at all, the match-fixing fiasco of the 1990s suggests otherwise. But, money might help build clubs that are built for victory, which, in turn, will build a large pool of talented footballers. thus breathing new life into the “Malaysian Tiger”.Kim Swee unfazed by personal gibes from Tunku Ismail, focused on AFF training | New Straits Times | Malaysia General Business Sports and Lifestyle News

“For reasons linked to privacy rights and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty, the investigatory chamber will not publish further details at the present time.”Blatter, 80, who is fighting to overturn his ban from football, declined to make comment about the latest case against him. However, people close to the disgraced Blatter and Kattner say both men strongly deny the allegations.Blatter and Platini were the most prominent casualties during more than a year of unprecedented scandal that upended world football, but many others have fallen.Prosecutors in New York have indicted at least 40 football and sports marketing executives over allegedly receiving tens of millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which typically has the final word in major sport disputes, is expected to deliver a verdict in Blatter’s appeal within weeks.Blatter has said that he will respect the verdict.Separately, former CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb has been banned from all football-related activities for life, FIFA said.Webb was found guilty of charges including conflicts of interest and bribery and corruption. He was also fined one million Swiss francs (US$1.02 million).Webb, who had been close to Blatter, was among those arrested in a dawn raid at a Zurich luxury hotel in May last year by Swiss police acting on a US warrant.--AFPFootball: China set sights on hosting 2030 World Cup | New Straits Times | Malaysia General Business Sports and Lifestyle News.

PETALING JAYA: National coach Ong Kim Swee reacted to personal attacks positively today, as the former international stated that ‘outside distractions’ will not deter him from preparing a formidable team for next month’s AFF Cup. “These accusations will not stop me from doing my job. I have been facing these issues since the day I became the national coach,” said Kim Swee at Wisma FAM in Kelana Jaya today.

On Friday, Darul Ta’zim owner Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim questioned Kim Swee’s coaching ability and alleged that his appointment was not based on merit. Johor had ordered strikers Darren Lok and Zaquan Adha Radzak, along with midfielder Irfan Fazail, to return to the club a day after the players reported for centralised training on Tuesday. The Premier League side informed the FA of Malaysia (FAM) that the three will only report for training in accordance with Fifa's regulation pertaining to the release of players for national duty, which is four days prior to a match. Malaysia will face Singapore on Oct 7 and Afghanistan, four days later.

“FAM supports me… whether we make it or not in the AFF Cup is for me to answer after the tournament. I would rather focus on the team, instead of doing something that is not going to benefit anyone, as I believe these issues will never stop. “You can’t stop people from saying things. For me, this matter has motivated me… I believe it will stop once I achieve the target in the AFF Cup,” said Kim Swee. Kim Swee said his players in the camp are also motivated to prove critics wrong.
