What is Tequila?
Tequila is a distilled beverage and alcoholic drink made from the blue agave plant. While historically, tequila was made primarily in the area surrounding the city of Tequila in the Mexican state of Jalisco, tequila makers now exist in all parts of the world, and premium tequilas can be found in many countries and in many regions across the globe. While tequila is typically served neat in Mexico, mixed tequila drinks and tequila shots – commonly served with a sprinkle of salt and a wedge of lime – are increasingly popular ways to drink it across the world. Although tequila started out as a primarily Mexican drink, it’s popularity has risen throughout the world, and most well-known tequila brands are now owned by large multinational corporations. Still, smaller companies throughout Mexico and the American Southwest are dedicated to creating only the finest of this liquid gold to rival and even exceed the products of these multinational corporations.
But you can’t get just any tequila
If you want to mix a drink that will wow even the most sophisticated of tequila connoisseurs, then you need only the finest of quality premium tequila. These impeccably crafted tequilas are full in body and rich in taste, perfect for sipping, mixing and even shooting. Tequila shots, after all, are a time-honored tradition, and with premium tequilas, you’ll be able to take a shot without the horrible, headache-inducing effects that cheap, low quality tequila inevitably brings.
Premium tequila has become so popular that the singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffet penned a song in 1977 singing its praises. Buffet was inspired to write the song by a drink he discovered at Lung’s Cocina del Sur restaurant in Austin, Texas: the margarita. The connection between music and tequila is one that goes back for ages. Many popular rock and country musicians have been inspired by tequila to write songs of homage. The popular American rock group, The Eagles, wrote a song, for example, called “Tequila Sunrise.”
But there is something truly special about Buffet’s margarita.
While it can be made in a variety of ways, the most common way to make a margarita is to wet the rim of the glass with a lime, salt the glass’s rim, then fill a cocktail shaker with two-thirds to three-quarters of ice, premium tequila, and triple sec. Then, in the words of Taylor Swift, shake, shake, shake. Margaritas are also commonly served with a wedge of fresh lime or with fresh lime juice poured directly into the mix. Thirsty yet?
Margaritas can also be made with flavored tequilas, such as mango or other citrusy fruits. The best margaritas, however, are made with the best premium tequilas.
As with any alcoholic drink, it’s important to imbibe tequila responsibly. While many songs dedicated to this delicious alcohol tend to emphasize tequila’s intoxicating and uninhibiting effects – such as Joe Nichol’s “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off” or Steve Goodman’s “How Much Tequila Did I Drink Last Night” – like any alcohol, tequila is best had in moderation.
